Chapter 544: Chapter 544

Lu Liu suggested, "The magnetic field here is a bit strange, though. I’m afraid the drone might go out of control. Let’s try it first, right?"

So, Lu Liu operated the drone down into the valley. Initially, it went smoothly, but once it entered the range of the rapids, the drone behaved as if its signal was blocked, crashing directly below with a BANG and was crushed to pieces.

The people below were shouting something, but unfortunately, only their voices could be heard, not what they were saying.

Jing Shu’s eyes darted around before she once again focused on the fat chicken. She was now in a hurry; she had found the Seeds but couldn’t get down! And the fat chicken was her most trusted assistant and companion.

Feeling Jing Shu’s gaze, the fat chicken shivered. Master is always trying to harm me, the chicken! It instinctively shrank back a bit.

"Let my chicken carry the message," Jing Shu suggested. "If it’s Little Red... the folks on the other side might die of fright. I heard they have guns, and what if they killed it, thinking it’s a monster? It’s so far away, and the people below don’t know Little Red is ours."

Yang Yang nodded seriously. "If they saw a monster on the other side, they might kill it, but if they saw a chicken..." They’re probably thinking about wild game they haven’t seen in ages. No matter what, they’d let a chicken land safely within their area. And then, they’d kill the chicken and eat it.

Jun Bao said regretfully, "The chicken is a good one. The situation below is quite dangerous. It would be a shame if it were killed by the rapids."

Upon hearing this, the fat chicken immediately nodded its head, tears welling in its eyes as it looked at its master. It’s so dangerous down there! Are you sending me to my death?!

"It won’t. My chicken can fly," Jing Shu bragged.

The fat chicken: "???"

Who the hell can fly? That’s just a few excited flutters, hey! It’s really, really far down there! Aren’t you afraid your chicken will perish? Then you’ll no longer have a chicken laying lots of eggs every day! Mum would be heartbroken too!

Eventually, a large loudspeaker playing a recorded message was tied to the fat chicken. It was also fitted with the Bone Umbrella that Mr. Jing had specially developed last year. This gadget was designed for earthquakes, for when large swathes of land collapsed, allowing one to instantly leap out and glide for a short distance. Sadly, it had never been used before.

In addition, there were some Compressed Biscuits. This was why Jing Shu was in such a hurry: the sooner she could get food to the people below, the fewer of her Seeds would be eaten. Besides, if the fat chicken got trapped down there and couldn’t get back up, and if it ran out of Compressed Biscuits, at least it could still lay eggs for food. Oh heavens, just don’t let them eat any more of my Seeds! These are extinct!

Yang Yang pursed his lips regretfully and continued discussing the rescue strategy with Lu Liu. The flight plan might have to be canceled; the magnetic field here was severely affecting the rescue.

"Perhaps we could set up a zipline to transport goods. It looks to be about a one-kilometer diagonal distance. If we moved the zipline from the nearby tourist spot over here, we could complete the transport. It’s safer but more time-consuming. We’d just have to give up on this cargo ship."

The fat chicken, meanwhile, with a push from its master, jumped off the cliff.

A pitiful squawk from the chicken echoed through the valley, likely heard even by the people below. Jing Shu nervously watched the chicken; her vision was excellent. The reason she dared to let the fat chicken ’fly’ down was that the landing requirements weren’t strict; as long as it landed somewhere around that village, its life wouldn’t be in danger.

However, it had recently gained a few more pounds, and with the added weight on its back, it could only manage a short flight at first. Soon, no matter how furiously it flapped, it began to plummet straight down. Seeing the ground rapidly approaching, the fat chicken quickly deployed the Bone Umbrella and finally managed to land successfully near the large ship.

Jing Shu exhaled a sigh of relief, then frowned. There were still people in the village below! Quite a few, in fact. They seemed to be emerging from their houses now, but they were too far away for her to see clearly.

"Look, something fell down!"

"It’s something sent by the rescue team!"

"We’re saved! Ga Mountain Valley is saved! It’s food from the people above! Everyone, quick, grab it!"

"Back off! Everyone, back off!"

The scene descended into chaos.

The fat chicken was still dazed from the fall, not yet having regained its bearings, when it sensed pairs of eyes, green with hunger, staring at it from nearby. Then, they lunged.

"Save me! CLUCK CLUCK!" The fat chicken flapped its wings, fleeing as if taking flight, with all its belongings tied to it.

"It’s a chicken! From the sound, it’s a chicken! It’s a chicken sent down from above for us to eat! Everyone, catch it quickly! We’re going to have chicken to eat!"

Hearing this, the fat chicken ran even faster.

Then, the loud BANG of a gunshot echoed. Li Dayou, his face grim, lowered his skeletal hand; he was extremely weak.

The hubbub of the crowd came to a sudden stop as he shouted, "Everyone back off! Until we understand what orders have been given from above, no one touches these things! Wang Dan, go get them."

Some villagers became unhappy. "But that’s food for us! I even saw lots of things tied to the chicken’s back, all food! Why can’t we eat it? If this chicken was sent down but not for us to eat, then what’s it for? Are you planning to hoard all this food for yourselves?"

Wang Dan spat. "Captain, I told you we shouldn’t have saved these wicked people! They still don’t understand the situation! If it weren’t for our distress signal, would the rescue team even have come? They clearly came for us! Who knew there were also people from Ga Mountain Valley here? Even if things are being given out, they’re meant for us!"

The gunshot had an immediate effect; people scattered into their houses like a receding tide, while some could be heard shouting from inside their homes: "You should be saving us anyway! You’re supposed to serve the people!"

Wang Dan was furious. "Haven’t we saved you? We ourselves can’t bear to eat these precious Seeds, eating dirt every day, and even violated direct orders from our superiors to give you the Seeds meant for our mission! And you’re still not grateful? Do you know how precious these Seeds are? These might be the last healthy Seeds in the world! Do you even know what you’re eating?!"

"Isn’t that what you’re supposed to do?"

Li Dayou waved his hand dismissively. "Stop wasting breath on them. Bring over the things dropped from above." He truly had no strength left.

Strangely, the chicken that many villagers had just failed to catch—an incredibly fat bird that made one’s mouth water just looking at it—was now walking over by itself.

Wang Dan stammered, "It... that chicken... it’s coming over by itself..."

Here it came, here it came! It strutted proudly with its chicken gait, bringing a bounty of food with it!

And so, under the stunned gazes of the crowd, the chicken, as if it knew who the leader was, ran right up to Li Dayou and tossed out the large loudspeaker. A moment later, the loudspeaker blared to life: "Collecting scrap... color TVs, refrigerators, washing machines... books, newspapers... beer bottles!"

Just as everyone was completely bewildered, the recording finally changed.
