Chapter 255: Chapter 255
"What could possibly go wrong? Mr. Qian never blinks when he picks up goods. I can accompany you, but can you hand over the merchandise first?" Fatty said, looking at the items on the table.
Could it be that she was overthinking it? Assuming these people had come to kidnap Su Malie? After all, in her past life, she had heard about Su Malie’s troublesome nature, always attracting drama wherever she went.
"We’ll give it to you once we have the oil," Jing Shu said. Better safe than sorry. She hadn’t laid eyes on Mr. Qian yet and decided to call him. There were various reasons she hadn’t called before, but now, just to be safe, it was best to confirm.
Su Malie blinked. "Jing Shu, you’re very vigilant and careful. My father says one has to be and not trust people easily." She gave Jing Shu a thumbs-up.
Fatty slumped back on the sofa, jiggling his leg while playing with his phone.
Just as Jing Shu took out her phone to contact Mr. Qian’s driver, Su Malie’s phone rang. Fatty’s leg stopped jiggling.
"Miss, it’s me. I’ve confirmed the gasoline, and now I’m heading back with it. Please wait for me a little bit."
"Okay." Su Malie hung up the phone easily. The atmosphere seemed to lighten considerably for a moment; even the two bodyguards behind Su Malie let out quiet sighs of relief.
"See? You can trust Fatty with the job. Can you hand over the items now?" After receiving Su Malie’s nod, Fatty shouted, "Aren’t you handsome fellas at the door going to come get the stuff? Are you waiting for your boss to carry it himself?"
The young man with the center-parted hair came in briskly and moved all the merchandise. Jing Shu also pulled out her phone to call Qian Duoduo’s driver—cough, cough. As someone who had dealt with Qian Duoduo several times, she didn’t even have his personal number. It was always through Niu Mou or the driver, which showed her status wasn’t very high, so it was best not to bother them without good reason.
Jing Shu frowned. She checked again—still no signal!
"Do you have a signal on your phone?" Jing Shu asked Su Malie. She had just been on the phone. And seeing Fatty suddenly on edge, there was definitely something fishy. Jing Shu snatched Su Malie’s phone. When she looked, there was no signal!
No doubt about it. There had been a signal just two minutes ago! Now, it was gone in an instant—it had to be blocked!
Jing Shu’s mind raced with countless possibilities. Her death in her past life had been due to a treacherous attack, so she had replayed such situations in her mind thousands of times, even planning how to respond if she encountered them again.
So, in a flash, Jing Shu sprang into action. She grabbed Fatty, who was just about to leave, forcefully detaining him. However, the others had already fled, slamming the door shut behind them. Jing Shu kicked the door, only to feel like she’d hit solid iron! Despite a heavy THUD, the door remained unscathed.
This door, which looked like a KTV entrance with its sofa-like leather upholstery, was actually made of iron! No wonder that young man had personally opened and closed it when they first came in!
Su Malie might not have realized what was happening, but her two bodyguards certainly did. They had been on edge ever since Jing Shu voiced her suspicions. Now that something seemed to be genuinely wrong, they immediately readied their rifles, one of them moving to shield Su Malie.
"Still trying to sneak away? With those shifty eyes, you don’t look like a good person. Tell me, what were you planning to do by blocking the signal?"
"Let go of me, you damn street punk!" Fatty howled. "Our signal here comes and goes, you know? Let go of me first! We can talk this out nicely. You’re holding guns; you’ve scared all my guys! Let me go, and I’ll open the door for you. If you want to leave, then hurry up and go, alright?"
"Who are you kidding? The signal was full strength a moment ago, and now it’s gone in an instant? After the apocalypse, all mobile communications merged into one company; the signal is incredibly strong," Jing Shu sneered. The source of thɪs content is NovelHub(.)net
"Jing Shu, maybe we should let him go first and see what he has to say. Uncle Gou also said the oil had arrived. They can’t possibly be playing tricks, right?" Su Malie said from the side, somewhat perplexed. Actually, it seemed like nothing was wrong, but Jing Shu had been acting strangely all morning.
"Your Uncle Gou isn’t acting normally either. The more I think about it, the more suspicious it seems. I’m worried he might have defected, been bought off, perhaps?" Jing Shu asked, furrowing her brow. She had trusted Uncle Gou as one of Su Malie’s people from the beginning, which was why she had overlooked many details. Sometimes, a stab in the back is the most terrifying.
Fatty panted heavily, unable to move. He clenched his teeth and struggled, but the woman’s grip was like iron pincers. He couldn’t believe a woman could be this strong!
"Impossible. Uncle Gou has been with me for nine years since he retired. He’s absolutely considered one of our own family. Money and treasures can’t sway him, and he has no family. Why would he defect? Besides, my father said that once he completes ten years of service, he’ll grant him that wish he made back then. The time is almost up; Uncle Gou’s wish is about to come true. The cost of his betrayal would be too high."
Su Malie categorically denied it. The bodyguards behind her might defect, but someone as close as a personal steward would never betray her.
Was she just being too sensitive?
Jing Shu slowly let go of Fatty. If Uncle Gou definitely wasn’t the problem, then the oil had indeed arrived. But the signal was absolutely being blocked. Were these people trying to lure Uncle Gou away, to draw the tiger from the mountain? But what good would luring Uncle Gou away do? Once he realized his young lady was kidnapped, wouldn’t he have to attempt a rescue? Then they would all be doomed.
If they simply wanted to kill someone, they’d had countless opportunities. This meant killing wasn’t the objective; they must be after something else.
"I advise you to behave. Don’t even think about opening that door and running off on your own," Jing Shu said, drawing a handgun from her waist and pressing it to the back of Fatty’s head. "Go on, open the door. If I’ve really misunderstood you, I’ll compensate you with two Blood Mushrooms later."
Jing Shu gestured for those behind her to follow. There was no telling if a bunch of AKs would be aimed at them as soon as Fatty opened the door. Jing Shu was even considering quietly slipping on her bulletproof vest. She had to complain about those vests; although they stopped bullets, getting hit still damn well hurt!
"I won’t try anything funny! You guys are seriously paranoid, completely nuts! Would a big boss like me bother with such petty stuff?" Fatty grumbled as he walked towards the door normally, Jing Shu’s handgun still aimed at the back of his head. If Fatty could still pull any tricks under these circumstances...
Just as she was thinking this, Fatty suddenly—WHOOSH!—disappeared!
So fast that no one had time to react!
