Chapter 58: Chapter 58

Derek heard Kathleen scream, he jerked awake and touched her side of the bed and discovered it was cold, she probably must have been gone for a while. he rushed towards the sound and gasped when he saw her at the foot of the stairs, unconscious. "No, no, no, don't even think of leaving me," he muttered as he ran down the stairs and carried her in his arms trying to wake her up, he tapped her cheek but got no response from her, "guards," he screamed, and some guards came running at his sound, from the look on their face they had been asleep, "how could you sleep why on duty?"

"What's going on here?" Marcella's voice got to his ears and she gasped when she saw Kathleen, "oh no, is she dead?" She whispered covering her mouth with her hands and Derek shot her a deadly glare before turning back to Kathleen.

Derek watched her face, it was very pale and her hands were extremely cold, she was losing a lot of blood, she had a side cut on her head and also swelling at the back of her head, she might suffer concussion "bring my car around" he lifted Kathleen in his arms and hurriedly carried her to his waiting car, he called the hospital that they should be on standby and Kathleen was rushed to the emergency unit as soon as he got there.

"She suffered a mild concussion, she just needs to rest and she'll be fine" the doctor informed Derek and he released the air he didn't know he was holding, he quickly thanked the doctor and walked into Kathleen's room, she was asleep when he entered and he quietly sat beside her and held her hand, he wondered at the cause of her fall, perhaps, the maids had been too careless and left slippery substance on the floor that could make someone slip, he made a mental note to admonish the maids when he got home.

Kathleen stirred and he glanced at her just as she opened her eyes, this was the second time she had been to this hospital, when she woke up the first time she was alone but this time Derek was sitting beside her, holding her hand and looking at her with concern, she felt warm inside.

"How do you feel?" He asked her still looking at her with concern.

She grimaced, "I feel like I fell from a very tall building"

"That's because you fell down the stairs and you've suffered a concussion because of that"

Kathleen suddenly recalled going down to get water when she suddenly heard movement behind her but was pushed down the stairs before she could see who it was, she groaned trying to sit up, "Derek..."

"Shhhh, just lie down, you need your rest, don't say anything"

Derek pushed her back on the bed before she could say anything, she had to tell him she didn't fall by accident, that someone had pushed her from behind"

"Derek, listen...." she tried again but once more he cut her off, "just relax Kath, I'll call the doctor to examine you" he walked out of the room before she could say something else, she sighed and closed her eyes, she would tell him when he returned.

The door suddenly opened "you're back so soon, I need to talk to you Derek" she whispered, already too tired to open her eyes.

"What do you want to discuss?" The voice that replied to her had her stiffening on her bed as her eyes flew open, "Marcella?" What are you doing here" she whispered fiercely, too weak to put up a fight

"I came to visit my daughter-in-law of cause, I heard she was involved in an accident" Marcella replied, sitting on the chair that Derek just vacated.

"You and I both know it wasn't an accident, someone pushed me" Kathleen gritted and Marcella's eyes rounded immediately with fingers to her lips, "how sure are you?"

"Stop acting Marcella, who else could it be if not you?"

Marcella's eyes narrowed, "are you in any way accusing me of attempted murder?"

"The accusation wouldn't be false would it?" Kathleen countered.

Suddenly, Marcella started crying, "how could you accuse me of such, I know I might have been hard on you before but how could you accuse me of pushing you, did you see me do it? I came here to show concern and I'm doing it for my son Derek but here you are accusing me of a crime I knew nothing of"

Kathleen frowned, confused at Marcella's reaction, why was she suddenly crying, and Kathleen soon know why Marcella was putting up such a show as her eyes sighted Derek standing at the doorway, Marcella must have seen him come in and immediately put on a show to convince him of her innocence.

She was such a schemer and from the looks on Derek's face, she knew Marcella had managed to convince him because he felt Marcella could be malicious but not enough to commit murder.

In as much as he doesn't get along with her and had never accepted her as his mother, she was still his father's wife and she understood his reluctance to believe that his father married a murderer but she would prove it and he would have to believe how dangerous Marcella is

"What the hell is going on here?" Derek asked coming into the room, he looked at Marcella, "what are you doing here?"
