Chapter 50: Chapter 50
It's been two weeks since her return and Derek had been loving and attentive, they went out on a date and spend much time enjoying each other's company. It was one of the happiest times of her life, she was practically glowing as she basked in the attention he showered on her, she smiled as she stretched lazily on bed, Derek had gone to the office very early, he had an urgent meeting to attend to but had promised to return as soon as he can, her stomach growled reminding her it was late morning, she quickly got out from bed, brushed her teeth and took a warm bath before going downstairs for her breakfast, she wolfed down the food hungrily, she had observed that for the past few days, she was always hungry and eating a large amount of food, she shrugged off the thought, maybe her appetite had changed after spending time downtown always thinking of what to eat, so her stomach was more open now to accommodate more food.
She carried a glass of sparkling juice, it has always been her favorite drink, she was leaving with it to watch some operas when Mary appeared in front of her smiling, "I'm glad you've finally found your happiness, I told you, time solves all problems"
Kathleen sighed as she sipped from her sparkling juice," I'm glad too Mary"
"What's that tone I hear, you don't sound too sure," Mary asked concerned and Kathleen shook her head, "it's not that, the truth is I'm afraid"
"Afraid? Of what"
"That everything is a dream, I'm afraid of it ending" Mary frowned at her words, "why don't you just live for the moment and enjoy every bit of it as it comes, stop thinking too much, besides, you have to trust in the love that the both of you share"
Kathleen regarded her, grateful for her presence and grateful for the fact that she had a friend she could confide in. She suddenly realized that she was always the one confiding in Mary, on the other hand, she knew nothing about her, "how about you, don't you love anyone?" She asked and Mary blushed, Kathleen raised a brow, "from your blushes it shows you have someone in mind, tell me who is he?"
Mary's eyes darted from right to left and Kathleen laughed softly at her obvious embarrassment, "common on, you can talk to me"
"Geoffrey, he's one of the guards here" Mary finally whispered, twisting her finger and looking at the ground
Kathleen was surprised, so Mary was in love with a guard, she had a faint memory of the guard she was referring to, he was one of the guards that had carried her out that day to the servant's quarter, not that she held it against him, he was just obeying orders, she touched Mary's chin, "I hope it works out for the both of you"
Mary took a deep breath, "thank you" she whispered before leaving Kathleen to ponder for a while.
Kathleen sat on the couch, sipping her juice as she watched her favorite opera soap, she yawned and she wondered why she was so suddenly tired, her eyes felt heavy and soon drooped close.
She shook her head and murmured when she felt something tickling her nose, she made to slap it away, eyes still close but felt it again, slowly her eyes opened and she saw Derek running a tiny feather on the tip of her nose, she made to stand up but suddenly held her head in her palm, groaning, his gaze quickly darkened with concern," are you alright?"
She nodded at his concerned question and struggled to her feet, "I just feel a little headache and I'm starving"
She had finished a whole lot of food before and she's starving again, "after eating we'll go see a doctor"
"No way, I think I must be very tired, I just need to rest" she quickly interjected, although she knew going to see the doctor is the right thing to do, she hated hospitals and won't rush down there for mere headache, she was served meal and she wolfed everything down, "I see you now have a very huge appetite" he observed after seeing how she had quickly finished the mountain of food placed in front of her, she grinned, "having a healthy appetite is the best don't you think? See? I'm feeling better already, no need to look so worried"
Kathleen ran into the bathroom as soon as she woke up the next morning, retching and throwing up, she rinsed her mouth when she was through.
"We are going to the hospital right now" Derek informed her as he called his assistant, asking him to cancel his appointments for the day.
Kathleen was too weak to argue, she knew she has to, she looked so pale, "do you think I'm pregnant?" She glanced at Derek who was taking through her wardrobe to bring out her clothes, "I mean, these are the signs right?"
Derek paused and looked at her, " I've thought of the possibility but let's not conclude until we've confirmed from the hospital"
Kathleen nodded weakly as Derek finally brought out her clothes.
Kathleen walked downstairs with Derek behind her, he had called for the driver to get his car ready, he looked so worried.
They were just about to go out of the house when she suddenly felt so light-headed, she stopped walking and groped for him, "are you alright?" He asked worriedly but Kathleen didn't have time to answer as colors suddenly swarm in her eyes, and her eyes close of their own accord, she could hear Derek shouting her name but she was hearing it from a distance as he caught her before she hits the ground.
Derek paced the hospital room while Kathleen was lying on the bed, he looked so worried, he don't know what he would do or how he would live if something happens to her, " calm down Derek, I am fine now, it might be that I am carrying your baby again, won't that be a great news?" Kathleen said weakly, tired from watching him pace, the color on her face was beginning to come back, although she was still very weak, she was feeling a bit better already, Derek whirled and opened his mouth to say something before the door opened and the doctor came inside, they both turned to him and he looked at them both, " the results are out"
Derek frowned not liking the tone of the doctor, "what is it doctor what does it say"
"We found traces of poison in her bloodstream," the doctor said and the color completely drained from Derek's face.
