Chapter 15: Chapter 15

"Jane, I think you should calm down. For all we know, this might have been a long time ago." Marcus' voice was filled with compassion.

"What do you mean I should calm down?!" Jane yelled more in pain than in anger or for the sake of being rude. "I know those clothes! I know those clothes in that picture! She wore them the same day she came to my office to be friends! And that shoe and the same hair." Jane was crying loudly making Marcus feel sad.

Jane felt her legs turn soft and she slowly slum to the floor. Her cry had subsided to a gentle sob but her tears were still uncontrollably and her pain raw in every teardrop. "Why will Suzan do this to me? I thought we were friends."

Marcus could hardly understand her words as they were mixed with tears and sorrow. He had dropped the picture on the floor and was twisting his hands contemplating whether he should comfort her or leave the room for her. "I am sorry," he muttered more to himself than to Jane. "I am sorry I did not tell you earlier," He said.

Jane raised her head to look at him confused. "What do you mean by that, did you know this was happening?!"

Marcus shook his head. "No" he mutters also sitting on the floor. "Intuition. I just felt like she wasn't to be trusted. Her friendship was too plastic. Emilia also didn't like her."

"Why didn't you tell me?" Jane's asked in a choked voice.

Marcus laughed humorlessly. " Are you kidding me?" His voice was louder than he wanted but he did nothing to change it. "Maybe because you are always yelling and you think you know best!"

Jane stared at Marcus in disbelief. She had always known he never feared her like everyone else but the way he just scolded her made her feel different. Like she wasn't giving him the chance to protect her the way he wants to protect her.

"Do you trust me?" Marcus sniffed staring into her eyes and she couldn't look away. His eyes were so beautiful they charmed her. "No," She replied.

"I know," Marcus said. "But I am asking you to trust me now, just this once."

"Okay," Jane replied sniffing as she tried to clean her face with her hand.

"You have to remain friends with Suzan."

Jane stared at him curiously, with frustration distinct in her eyes.

Marcus stared back, surprised, expecting her to look quickly away. But instead, she continued to gaze with probing intensity into His eyes.

Marcus could sense she thought he was crazy. He blinked and cleared his throat. Jane also looked away.

"Suzan is being used to get information from you, so use her to get what you want."

"What exactly do I want?" Jane was confused. The fact that she had been used easily was eating at her but she knew she was more confused because of Marcus' eyes.

Marcus look at her and raised his eyebrows also confused. " To catch the frauds in the company with evidence, is that not what you want?"

"Oh," Jane felt her cheek flush red. She stood up and walk towards the window. "Yes, that is what I came here to do." She replied.

"Well then," Marcus also stood but still maintained the distance between them. "Is that a plan?"

"Yes!" Jane said turning around. "We start tomorrow," she added and left the room.

Marcus went to bed almost immediately after Jane left. He woke up early the next morning and did his usual morning rituals. He was sitting on his favourite couch, the one he sat on to take his coffee every morning when Jane matched down the stairs causing Marcus to spill his tea. Her hair was packed in a ponytail, she wore a tracksuit and Nike sneakers.

"I do not pay you to sit around all day you know?" Jane's voice was arrogant and rude, she was back to her old self.

Marcus' lips twitched, fighting a smile.

"What? Is anything funny?"

"Yes, yes something is funny."

Jane frowned. "Which is?"

Marcus held his cup of coffee and walked up to her. "For someone who was crying uncontrollably in my arms yesterday, I find it hard to believe you still want to boss me around." Marcus gave her the cup of coffee and walked to the kitchen to make another cup for himself.

Jane wasn't sure what to do or say. 'Should I keep up with what I already started and remind him who the boss is? Or should I just let this slip?' Without meaning to she sipped from the cup of coffee Marcus gave her. She was blown away. She wasn't going to admit to him that this is the best coffee she had had in a very long time. She strolled into the kitchen and kept her already empty cup in the sink. "You know I am still the boss around here right? And just because I allowed you to witness me in a moment of weakness doesn't make us friends."

Marcus turned to face her. "Yes ma'am," he said with a crooked smile. "By the way Ma'am..." Marcus made sure to stress the ma'am causing Jane to chuckle. "Why are you dressed like an Elementary school P.E. teacher?" Marcus had turned back to making his coffee and was sieving some substance into the kettle.

Jane took a quick look at herself and back at Marcus who still had his back to her. "What is wrong with my dressing?" Her question was honest and it took Marcus by surprise.

He poured his coffee into a mug and turned to Jane. "You are going to act like Susan's friend, you are not fighting her," Marcus stated leaning on the table.

"I have to be prepared for anything," Jane said defending herself.

"She would not know you know a thing if you do not tell her or show up wearing that. So, Ma'am Jane, I suggest you go back upstairs and wear one of your killer clothes."

A few minutes later, Jane came downstairs dressed and ready to go.

"That's more like it 'Ma'am," Marcus still stressed the word, ma'am. "Let's go kill them with kindness!"
