Chapter 31: Chapter 31

“Yes, I am serious.” Daisy said and terminated the call.

The girls went to see their fellow who lost her child later during the day. She was inconsolable. She was saying that was her only child and now gone, she did not see a reason to live.

“God will give you another.” Some girls were telling her.

Daisy however told Nancy, “We are like soldiers, this is our work and, in our work, there must be casualties and risks, also losses. Let us not use this one event to make us give up. We are in this town to survive, and we shall move on.”

“Sometimes life is risky in all things we do.” Nancy told the other girls.

“True, and death can happen to anyone and anywhere.” Some other girl said.

Over the following few days, the girls tried their best to contribute towards resettling their friend who had lost her daughter and her everything as it all got burnt.

Nancy set up a WhatsApp group for the funeral arrangement and invited many people who knew her online. She went on to explain the reason why she formed the group.

Many people who joined were very cooperative. They channeled their contributions to her number where she also would channel to the mourning girl.

Nancy who was so popular online also went on to invite people to contribute. She made it known to her friend the reason why she was asking for the contributions. She made it known the girl had lost her daughter and everything that got burnt.

“You are such a good online mobilizer!” Daisy told Nancy when she noticed how she was engaging her online friends.

“Yes, they know me for a long time.” Nancy said.

The men in her timeline thought that was the opportunity to get to know Nancy’s number well. They sent her money just to verify that her number was real and most would even call her asking what it was all about.

Nancy had all the time to explain to them.

On first day, Nancy managed to get Kshs 34,200.

On second day, Nancy got even more, she got Kshs 43,560!

The trend continued such that she channeled some of the money to her account to avoid her Mpesa overloading. She was like the treasurer of the group and the committee that was organizing the burial of the girl that died in the fire.

The little girl was to be buried in Ganze where they hailed.

-----

Finally, the burial day arrived. Most people who knew here from Mtwapa travelled to attend her burial.

Nancy could not help but cry when the girl was being lowered to her grave. Almost everyone was crying. It was agonizing losing such a young soul.

“This girl was so bright in school.” Someone said.

Finally, after the burial. Nancy and other girls went back to Mtwapa. Nancy still had almost 60,000 in her account that was meant to help their friend who lost her daughter. She did not tell anyone else but held the money in her account until the girl who list her daughter returned to Mtwapa as she could not survive in the village since they were very poor back there.

“Karembo, I called you here to tell you that I still have money that was contributed for you. It is exactly Kshs 59,200. That is after we did everything that we did.” Nancy told Karembo, who had lost her child.

“Nancy, money cannot give me back my daughter.” Karembo said.

“I know, but I wanted to give it to you. It belongs to you.” Nancy told Karembo.

Karembo sat down thinking.

“If I never went out there that night, my daughter would be alive.” Karembo said.

“It already happened how it happened. We just have to accept that it was God’s will. We now have to move on.” Nancy told her.

“What do you want me to do with the money?” Karembo asked.

“You just got yourself a new house, you can buy a few items for your house. At least to be more comfortable and move on.” Nancy told her.

Karembo thought for a while.

“I want to stop this prostitution.” Karembo said.

Nancy just remained silent.

“Give me the money if you have it, I will see if I can start even a small business.” Karembo said, “I want to start a new life.”

“You can do that too.” Nancy said. Nancy got her equitel line and loaded it into her phone. She then used i
