Chapter 2: Chapter 2
Currently Courtney together with her Aunt was in Malpensa Airport to send farewell to her closest cousin/patient.
"Give my kisses to the twins will you?" Courtney hugs her cousin.
"Of course!" His cousin smiled and copied the gestured.
They both hugged each other since Courtney wouldn’t know when to have time to pay him and his family a visit because of her tight schedule. She was sad, but also happy for him knowing that he is now alright and will be finally be with his family after tragic and traumatic events.
“I think your phone is ringing Zac.” Courtney was first to break their moments.
“Yeah I better take this, please excuse me.” His cousin stepped away to answer the call.
Few moments later, Zac came back and informed them that his friend is on his way to join them. Five minutes top they heard a man shouting Zac name and they all looked at the direction of the voice. Zac waved his hand and motioned for his friend to come over that was understood by the latter.
"Hi man! Sorry I'm late." The guy patted his cousin’s shoulder.
"Its fine man we just got here. Anyway, this is my mom Marie, and my cousin Courtney." Zac introduced him to them.
Courtney saw the guy in close distance and got captivated with his blue eyes. His forehead, cheekbones and jaw are same width, but the jaw has a sharp angle to it, a perfect square facial structure. Ben also noticed the woman beside his friend, and immediately noticed the heart shape face – the crystal blue eyes that caught his attention.
"Nice to meet you Mrs. Collins and you too Courtney - I'm Ben... Benjie Venoso." Ben introduced back.
It was then Courtney became immobilized and couldn’t form a word to talk. She was too engrossed on this man’s physique that she can’t hear or feel anything. Zac can tell that his cousin was more like checking out his friend.
"Same here, right Courtney?" Zac’s mother elbowed Courtney to get her to move earning a chuckle from him.
"Oh... ye-ah – that's right." Courtney stuttered.
"Stop eye-rapping Ben!" Zac teased her out loud.
"I was just checking if he's not the pigment of your imagination dear cousin." Courtney rebuts while Ben just laughed it off.
“Knock it off you too, we have a guest and you two act like 5 year old kids. My apologies Ben for these two rascals, it was nice meeting you.” Mrs. Collins extended her hands for a shake.
“It’s fine Mrs. Collins it’s not every day that I get to see Zac act like a kid.” Ben chuckles.
“Anyway thank you for the generous offer you gave to my son, we really do appreciate your help.” Mrs. Collins smiles back.
“Oh not at all Mrs. Collins, Zac is my friend, and besides I’m going the same direction as he is, so I don’t see any reason for me not to help him, saves us both time.” Ben explained.
"I'm sorry for the interruption Mr. Venoso I’m here to take you to the lounge as we prepare the plane to leave." An attendant notified them.
"Very well, thanks will do now." Ben gave a brief nod to the crew.
“You have a VIP PASS?” Courtney found her words again, but wished she didn’t speak at all since she sounded as dumb as she looks right now.
“Yes.” Ben answered simply, but with a smile.
“Not only that he also owns an airplane dear cousin, big time right?” Zac added.
“Yeah, he is big… I meant the plane.” Courtney wants to face-palm herself and let the ground swallow her stupidity.
“Thanks.” Ben said watching her lower her head.
“Do you guys mind if I go to the powder room I just need to use it badly?” Courtney excused herself.
“Not at all dear, go and just follow us alright?” Mrs. Collins looked at her niece who seems to be uncomfortable.
Courtney walked away while silently cursing all the way until she reached her direction. As soon as she occupied one of the cubicles she took a deep long breath just like the way she tells her patients when they are anxious. Her five minutes encounter with the sexiest stranger she met made her forget all the years she spent studying Psychology for being stupid. She took a moment to compose herself and make sure when she joins them again she will be on her best foot forward. With that thought in mind she fixed her hair and retouched her make up. Meanwhile Ben just watched her in amusement as she disappeared from the crowd.
“Your cousin is amusing.” Ben says with a slight chuckle.
He finds her comments comical, but sophisticated on her own way. He often gets the same reaction with women, yet something about his friend’s relative made her different from the rest. Ben dropped whatever he is thinking and focused on his goal that is to woo his ex. “Please tell me you’re not attracted to Court man.” Zac observed his friend.
“Of course not man, I’m just entertained on her choice of words.” Ben reasoned out.
“Believe me she does when on her right mind.” Zac commented.
“Right mind?” Ben couldn’t help but asked.
“Yeah usually she tends to speak with her mind, just not today.” Zac explained.
“Enough with that son, lets head to the lounge so we can relax a little while waiting for your plane to be set?” Mrs. Collins suggested.
“I’ll just text Court our location.” Zac was about to fetch his phone.
“You and your Mom can go ahead with one of my crew; I’ll wait for Courtney otherwise she won’t be allowed to get in there unless she is accompanied.” Ben cuts in.
Zac was about to protest, but his Mom pulled his hand and they followed the crew that is patiently waiting for them. Ben stayed on the same spot and waited for Courtney for fifteen minutes and twenty seconds. Yes, that’s correct Ben is mentally groaning and wants to regret his offer since the woman is taking so long. He wondered if she gets lost since the airport is big, but decided to wait for few more minutes since he assumed the woman can find her way back with the signs provided. He is on the verge of giving up, and was about to call his friend when he saw Courtney suddenly immersed from one of the alley. Courtney easily saw Ben and studied his action – her best guess – he is getting impatient.
“Finally you’re here.” Ben looked at his watch.
“I am, but where are they?” Courtney looked around for her relatives.
“They are waiting at the Lounge area.” Ben informed her.
“Did you purposely wait for me?” Courtney made an eye contact with him this time.
“I figured its best that I’ll accompany you since you didn’t have a pass.” Ben stated a matter of fact.
“Oh okay, Merci for waiting.” Courtney smiled at him.
“You’re welcome; Let’s go, the plane must be ready by now.” Ben gestured his head.
“Of course, lead the way.” Courtney suddenly felt her confidence once again flew out of the window.
After their short conversation, Ben muttered incoherent words about the time while Courtney analyzed his expression and body language, perks of being a Therapist. Courtney knew he is gentleman, kind-hearted and humble, but has some issues with his temper. Still she is thankful that he waited for her when in fact he can just order one of the crew to do it. That small gestured made Courtney’s heart flattered since no guy dares to do if for her – well aside from her Cousin of course. Finally they reached the Lounge and Zac was first to wave his hand this time. They all seated and were served with complimentary replenishment.
The Lounge area consist of ten white two-seaters tables that were placed by the glass window where you can see the magnificent view of the runway while. On the corner you will see an excellent buffet table with a selection of fresh sweet and savory package foods; alcohol by the Bar that also offers soda, hot and cold drinks. Aside from that there is also unlimited internet service, real-time flight information, cable LED television, Xbox, magazines or books to read for adults and kids. Few rooms are also available for family, smoking area is also provided; conference room and shower rooms upon request.
Currently they are sitting on the couch located on the farthest corner while conversing having light meals. A little while later after finishing their drinks, a crew suddenly approached them and informed that the plane is now ready to take off. Ben thanked them and stood up fixing the invisible dust on his clothes.
"I guess this is it I'm going back home." Zac plastered a big smile.
“Take care son.” Mrs. Collin hugs her son with teary- eyed
“I’ll miss you, but I’m happy for you and Shannen.” Courtney shortly followed and hugged her cousin.
Ben bid goodbye by planting a kiss on each check for Mrs. Collins and Courtney since its part of the culture that even men do the same thing with their friends. Courtney heartbeats erratically, but choose not to make it visible and make a big deal out of it, but deep inside she wanted to scream.
“Aren’t you saying goodbye to Ben too.” Mrs. Collins nudged her.
“Oh yeah – safe flight guys!” Courtney recovered after clearing her throat.
Ben gave her a nod while Zac tapped her shoulder and run after the crew. Courtney watched them interact, but paid more attention to Ben who gave her that crazy somersaults feeling. She doesn’t know exactly when they will meet again, but one thing is for sure, Courtney is definitely swooned with Ben physique and charm.
Three months passed, now Ben is back in Italy after he sold his Coffee shop in New York. He decided it was for the best to get over his past relationship and accepted his defeat. His time is now circling with managing their family’s coffee shop while his younger brother looks after their late Grandmother’s vineyard that produces the finest wine in the Europe. Currently he is in the library, and couldn’t help but stare at the picture frames hanging from the wall. It was his Nonna (Grandmother), his Papa and his Nonno (Grandfather) was still alive.
The library was his Nonno and Papa’s favorite place to think and discuss meetings or any family matters while his Nonna preferred the garden. He remembered their father used to give them punishment like cleaning the vineyard or facing the wall for an hour until they learned they realized their mistakes.
“We miss you old man.” Ben talked to his Dad’s portrait.
Alessandro Venoso, the Coffee Master (1960-2004)
Ben and Eric were attached to their father so even if 11 years had passed, they still miss him; they never thought that in one accident it will bring their happy family apart. Their mother didn’t take the news lightly and left the responsibility to their Grandmother Susanne without knowing how it will affect her children. Thanks to Ben’s former girlfriend who helped them built the broken bond. They are now better and they have forgiven their mother for abandoning them.
Their father died from a plane crashed during his business trip in Germany. Back then, the business was on the brink of bankruptcy so their father was required to travel and negotiate with their investors. The board members did not allow their mother to take over the business since it will create conflict because she was handling the wine business. Eric was only 10 years old that time attending High school while Ben is only 17 years old currently on his last year in College. The only option that time was leaving the Company on Ben’s hand with outmost supervision from his grandfather since he was a minor and still attending classes. After Ben graduated the following year, he started working at his father’s company but not as the CEO. It was stated on his father’s last will with the Board’s consent that Ben obliged without a fuss. He started from the lowest rank until such time that he is ready to take the position as the CEO.
“I missed you too Nonno and our endless discussion about the business.” Ben switched his eyes to the next portrait.
Lorenzo Venoso II, the Legendary Barista (1935-2008)
Their grandfather held that title ever since he can remember. He was the first man who introduced organic coffee throughout the country that later on became popular and was recognized to other European Countries. For Ben he was more like Ben’s teacher/mentor because he taught him the ways around their business and how to know the best coffee just by smelling its aroma. Since he was 8 years older than Eric, he often spends time with his grandfather.
“I know you miss me too Nonna as I do too.” Ben turned his way to the last portrait hanging on the wall.
Susanne Conti, the founder of Little Hope (1945-2016)
Being a Philanthropist, one of her goal was to help people regardless of what their needs or status. She was very devoted especially to sick children so she decided to fund a charity institution named “Little Hope”.
During the accident of his Dad, their Grandmother was at the hospital recovering from heart operation while their mother is busy working. When their Nonna Susanne was still alive she always spends time in her garden as her hobby. She made sure that one of her grandchildren will learn how to take care of the plants that eventually Eric inherited. Ben smiled at the memories and promised to pay their tombstones a visit one of these days. With that in mind, Ben went back reviewing the new contract for their prospect investors.
“Figlio (son)!” His mother entered the room.
Lilian Venoso is now 57 years old, but still glowing even with wrinkles visible on her squared faced. Ben and Eric got their brown brunette hair from their mother while the height; character, and built are definitely from their father.
"Hi Mamà, come stai (How are you)?" Ben kissed her forehead.
"Sto bene (I'm okay), you on the other hand is busy as a bee and rarely come home for dinner.” Mrs. Venoso hugged her eldest son.
“Apologized Mamà I’ll make it up to you.” Ben promised.
“If you are really serious on that then go out and get a girlfriend, I’m not getting any younger figlio.” Mrs. Venoso started with her endless speech about dating again.
"Mamà I don't have time for that I'm busy with the café and la vigna (vineyard)." Ben explained briefly.
“I know when you are lying. You think I don't know that you're still pining over Sherina? She already got a boyfriend so it's time for you to move on and find somebody else." His mother put hand on the hip in intimidating manner.
"Mamà how many times do I have to tell you that I am over her?" Ben tried to justify his answer.
It is true that he is indeed over with his past relationship, but up until this day he is facing the consequences. Lesson learned for Ben is – never use the word gay as an excuse to escape commitment because that was he did and look where he landed.
“Then prove it to me otherwise I will think your sexuality does changed over time.” Mrs. Venoso challenged him since this is the only way for him to agree on her plan.
"I thought we are over this topic Mamà?” Ben regrets the lie he made long time ago.
“I will be thoroughly convinced if I see you dating again which is why I am here. Let’s discuss something important, shall we?" His mother sat across him.
"If this is about setting up a date with another woman you know what my answer is." Ben groaned thinking about it.
"Enough talking and listen to what I am going to say." His mother sat comfortably on the chair.
Ben knew exactly where the conversation is going and hoping his mother will not set him up with one of her friend's daughters again. Mrs. Venoso is playing cupid for the entire three months and none of them really catches his son’s attention. Last time his son agreed turned out a horrific scene and the family even apologized for what happened.
"So what do you want to talk about Mamà?" Ben started.
"Benjamin you're not getting any younger.” Mrs. Venoso grabbed a book on the desk.
"I'm only 28 years old Ma.” Ben answered.
“I know, but soon I will be gone before we know it." His mother sighed.
“Are you sick?" Ben couldn't help but get worried.
"Of course not! I'm perfectly fit as you can see what gave you that hideous idea?" His mother put the book down.
"Sorry it's just the way you said it. If you're not sick then where is this conversation leading?" Ben furrowed his eyebrows.
"I want you to get married." His mother replied straight away as if it was too easy.
"Ma, it's preposterous! That is way much worse than setting me up on horrible dates." Ben suddenly felt tensed.
"If you don't then I'm going to give all your shares to your brother." Mrs. Venoso folded her arms.
"Ma, you can't do that! I'm not against Eric or his shares, but he already got his own fair share I was the one who worked hard for this." Ben disagreed.
"Exactly my point, but I already made up my mind. I want you to get married and give me grandchildren then we can talk about your shares." His mother counted with her fingers.
"It's so unfair! Why don't you tell Eric to get married too?" Ben protested and thought his brother should have the same dilemma.
"Enrico still got a long way to go." His mother commented flatly.
"I am young too Mamà!" Ben tried to convince her.
"I want to meet my future daughter-in-law tomorrow and then we can announce your engagement on my birthday, that’s my third condition." His mother tactically said.
“In less than two months?" Ben still can't believe his mother is pressuring him.
"If you don't meet the woman in two months then I'm arranging a marriage for you whether you like it or not. My decision is finale (final).” Mrs. Venoso looked him straight into his eyes.
“It's not that easy to find a woman that--” Ben tried to talk.
“Keep complaining and I’ll add more to that condition, we can do this all day Benjamin.” Mrs. Venoso has a victory smile.
“Fine you win.” Ben tone is conflicted, but can’t say no more.
“Marvelous! I’m going now figlio; I’ll see you and your chosen bride soon.” His mother stood up and kissed both of his cheeks.
Ben watched his mother walked with victory.
“Cazzo!” He cursed loudly in Italian the big F word in English.
For the rest of the day Ben can’t focus on his work and tried to think of solution to get out of that foreseen marriage that he is positively not looking forward for that. He needs a quick solution, but his mind is not cooperating as of the moment. Ben quickly takes out the phone inside his pocket and dialed the only person he knew that can help him out.
(PHONE CONVERSATION)
Ben: Enrico. (He instantly said when his brother picked up the phone)
Eric is now 20 years old with a height of 175 cm while Ben stands 180 cm. Him and Eric got blue eyes from their father, but his facial structure is from his mother. He has high cheekbones tapering to a point on the brow three-quarters of the way between the temples and the chin. He is currently managing their grandmother’s vineyard after graduating from College. He took up Business Management major in Finance, same course like his brother had.
Eric: What do want this time? (His brother answered a little annoyed)
Ben: Where the hell are you?! (He asked with a grunt)
Eric: Having the best time of my life, but you cockblocker is stopping me from it. (He sounded out of breath)
Ben: I don’t give a damn about that! You better get your cazzo culo (fuck ass) to the office right now, or I’ll chop it off Enrico. (He knew exactly what his brother is doing.
Eric: You are really in trouble if you swear that hard. (He can tell his brother is really pissed because he used his real name twice)
Ben: I’m giving you ten minutes or I’m going to tell Mamà that it was you that broke her favorite porcelain vase from Ukraine and not the house help. (He got the upper hand)
Knowing their mother and her addiction to porcelain vases she will be furious to death. Even if that incident happened when they were still kids the reaction is still fresh like the smell of a wet paint. He will not take any chances for his temperamental brother to spill that secret.
Eric: Damn it! I’m on my way! (His brother lost his desire to continue the deeds)
Eric gathered his clothes scattered on the floor and asked for the woman’s number with a promised to call, but in reality he won’t for two reasons. First he doesn’t call at all and lastly he can’t even remember the name.
Ben: See you in my office at ten!” (He cuts off the call)
(END OF PHONE CONVERSATION)
Ben reached his office in hastily manner and waited for his brother to discuss the conversation he had with their Mother.
