Chapter 39: Chapter 39

"Wow, this house is huge E." I said after she opened the main door of their vacation house. I stepped inside and looked around. Hell yeah, I know that she came from a rich family but I never knew that even their vacation house could be as huge as this. It looked like a mansion.

"This has been our family's vacation house for generations now. It has been passed on from our ancestors since God know when." She said as she closed the door behind us.

"It's a good thing that you still maintained the beauty of this place." I said.

"Actually, this place has been renovated countless times already; maybe that's why it still looked as good as it is now." She said.

"This is really great." I said. "Anyway, are we alone here?"

"For now, yes, we are," She said. "But we have a house cleaner who maintains this place and they come here on weekends only."

"Oh, alright," I said. "So that explains why this place is well maintained."

"Come on; I'll lead you to the guest room." She said as she walked towards the stairs. Even their stairs looked so regal.

"Wait, E," I said. "There's just something I need to ask."

"What?" She said.

"Are you sure I can stay here? I mean, what if your parents know about this?" I said. "And... and they'll tell on us? What would they do?"

"Don't worry about them, okay? And, they already know that we're here." She said. "I called them earlier."

"They do?" I said. "Were they mad or upset?"

"Yes but don't worry, I told them not to tell anyone about our whereabouts." She said. "We're safe here. You can stay here for as long as you want; no one will find you here."

"What do you mean we're safe here?" I said. "Are you staying here with me?"

"For the meantime, yes," She said. "But just temporarily, okay? I can only take a few days off from work. Plus, they'll suspect me if I'd be gone for too long, you know."

"Oh, I see," I said. "Isn't that too much of a hassle? I mean, you don't have to do this, you know. It's more than enough that you sheltered me; you don't have to go this far just to help me."

"No, it's really fine," She said. "And I also needed this time off of work, you know. I have been so stressed lately. Give this to me."

"Well, that's great! At least I won't get bored here now that you're with me even just for a few days." I said.

"And I also have a lot of time to listen to your life dramas." She said as she smirked. "But for now, you should get some rest. I know you have been through a lot today and I won't press this anymore. I can wait until tomorrow."

I nodded and walked towards her. "Thank you,"

She smiled and started climbing the stairs and I followed her.

"This house has six bedrooms," She said. "No one's occupying any room here for now so we got the whole place for ourselves. So, I am giving you one of the biggest rooms here."

"Any room is fine with me." I said. "It's not like I would complain, you know. I can take whatever room there is."

"Do you really think I would let you settle in something less? Of course not!" She said.

"Yeah, right," I said.

She laughed and turned to me. We were in front of a wooden door which I thought might be her room.

"Anyway, this is your room." She said as she opened the door. It was a huge off white room with a queen sized bed and gray curtains on all windows. It also has a veranda which faces the garden and the pool. I didn't even notice that they have a pool. Well, it's late already and it was a bit dark outside when we entered.

"This is my room?" I said. "Are you sure?"

"Yeah," She said. "Why? Don't you like it? We can go and see the other rooms if you want. As I said, we have six rooms here. Let's go and see the other rooms."

"What? No, no," I said as I shook my head redundantly. "This is more than fine, okay? This is even too much. We don't have to go and see the other rooms. I am more than fine here."

"Oh, thank God! I thought you didn't like it." She said. "So, I'll leave you here to settle your things and freshen up." She said. "I'll just meet you later for dinner, okay?"

"Yeah, sure," I said. "I can cook dinner for us. What do you want?"

"No, don't bother," She said. "I know you're exhausted and I already told our caretaker slash house cleaner to take care of our dinner."

"Oh, alright," I said. "Maybe next time,"

"Sure, next time then," She said.

"I'll look forward to that." I said.

She nodded and walked to the door and opened it. "Me too, I'll see you later, okay?"

I turned to her and nodded. She went out of my room and I immediately started unpacking my things. I placed them on the closet and as soon as I was done, I thought of getting a quick shower. I stink and definitely needed one. I took a pair of house clothes and put them on the bed before I stepped into the bathroom. The bath tub was tempting but I decided not to try it for now. I'll just use it some other days when I am not in a hurry. I didn't want Erin to wait for me especially since it was about time for dinner. I went out of the bathroom and dried my hair with a blower as I sat at the vanity mirror beside the closet. I took the clothes on the bed and changed into it. I was brushing my hair when I heard Erin knocking on my door. Is it time for dinner already? I doubt it. I know it was still early and I still have time to prepare before dinner time comes. I opened the door and saw her standing there looking uneasy as she held out the phone on her hand.

"Oh my God! Oh my God!" She said as she entered my room. What the hell is wrong with her?

"Hey," I said nervously. "What's the matter with you?"

"Your husband is calling!" She said. "I know he'll ask me about you. What should I tell him?"

"He's not my husband. Don't call him my husband, please!" I said.

"Alright," She said. "Wade is calling me. What do I do? I'm sure he'll ask me about you!"

"I don't know," I said. "Just tell him that we aren't together or better yet, don't answer him. Yeah, don't answer him for now."

"What?! No way! If I don't answer him, then he'll know that I am avoiding him." She said. "Ssssh, I'll answer it. Do not make any noise; he'll recognize your voice."

I did as she said and kept my mouth shut. She pressed the answer button and put Wade on speaker. I felt nervous and uneasy as well just like Erin.

"H-Hello?" She greeted. "Wade? What's up?"

"Hey, Erin," I heard Wade said on the other line. His voice brought but a lot of memories on my head and along with those memories were the pain she injected on me. I must admit; his voice makes the pain come back again. Hearing his voice makes me remember the things I heard in his conversation with Riley.

"What's up?" She said.

"I've been calling Cami a couple of times but I just can't reach her. Did she call you?" He said intensely. "You're her best friend; I'm sure she'll contact you."

"No, she didn't call me," She said. "I was actually trying to get a hold of her too but I can't seem to get to her as well."

"Is that so?" He said. "Well, can you call me if ever she contacts you? We had a misunderstanding and we badly need to talk. I need to clear things with her."

"Alright, I'll call you as soon as she does." She said. "Is there anything else I can help you with?"

"Hmm, no," He said. "That's all. Thanks."

"Alright," She said and ended the call.

I breathed out. I didn't notice that I was holding my breath the whole time that they were talking.

"Do you think he believed you?" I said as soon as I recovered.

"I hope so," She said. "There's no reason for him to doubt me, you know."

"I'm sorry for all the trouble, E. I'm sorry that I put you into this situation." I said.

"Nah, stop apologizing already; this sounds fun anyway." She said.

"Fun? Thank you for thinking of my life crisis as something that is fun, huh." I said sarcastically.

She laughed and shook her head. "Are you done? Our food should arrive any minute now."

"Yeah, I was just brushing my hair when you came in." I said.

"Alright, I'll just call and see if our food is on our way, okay?" She said.

I nodded and she went out of my room. I continued fixing myself before I went out to help Erin in the kitchen.
