Chapter 21: Chapter 21
Alex retired to his room as quickly as he could. He didn't know how much longer he could stay standing without fainting from all the pain he was going through.
The physician was called by Hendrix as Alex laid weakly on his bed feeling feverish all of a sudden.
The physician, Jericho, wasn't new to this but this was the worst he'd seen the Alpha.
Sagyu was beginning to burn him badly.
"Why didn't you call me right away when you noticed the damage Sagyu was causing?" He reprimanded Hendrix as quietly as he could in a bid to avoid waking the sleeping alpha.
"I thought of it, but just couldn't leave his side," Hendrix replied in remorse.
"Indeed," Jericho replied, eyeing him in disbelief.
Jericho felt terrible for the young Alpha. No man should be made to suffer so much for a sin they knew nothing about.
He had consulted the moon goddess through the seer for a very long time but she had claimed not to see anything.
Alex groaned in sleep, shifting tired in his bed.
His skin was badly burnt and he still couldn't sleep well because of the nightmares that plagued his sleep.
"We need to talk this instance! "
Mia yelled as she stormed into the young Alpha's room.
"Shh!" Jericho was quick to shut her up with a finger pressed against his lips.
Mia took in the scene before her. Firstly, the man standing right in front of her was a scrawny old man. He looked really wary and his hair was gray; every strand was.
Hendrix stood at a corner looking like a rat caught in the limelight stealing cheese.
And there was Alex!
Mia ran to the bed he laid in ready to pull him into her hands.
"Don't touch him!" Jericho was quick to stop her.
Mia stopped just inches from him, staring at him worriedly. He had lines; his head and his brows were kneaded together in stress.
"What happened to you?" Mia asked not taking her tearful eyes off him.
"It's nothing serious. He'll be fine" Jericho tried to sound dismissive.
"What do you mean it's nothing serious? Look at him!"
Mia cried out as she stared deeply at the burn marks on his skin.
"Hush, dear. You mustn't wake him." Jericho waved at her, beginning to piss her off.
"Don't shush me. Answer the question I asked you earlier. As your Luna, I command you to." Mia tightened her jaw and bored holes into his forehead.
"He was attacked yesternight in the woods while he went for a run," Hendrix replied.
Mia's hand flew to her mouth as she cried silently, trying not to wake him. She squatted beside his bed and placed a gentle kiss on his brows to ease them a bit. Hendrix and Jericho watched in wonder at how quickly his brows relaxed and his face became peaceful.
"Leave us," She instructed quietly.
"But Luna-" Hendrix tried to oppose but when Mia shut him a death glare, he quickly took his leave with Jericho right behind him.
"Why did you block me out? I could have helped you." Mia asked a sleeping Alex.
He looked peaceful and Mia couldn't help but stare at him.
It was unfair to let someone have so much beauty.
Mia soon climbed into bed beside her mate with her palm massaging his scalp gently. Alex gave a soft groan in apprehension while still sleeping. This encouraged Mia to go on.
She wasn't sure how long she stayed there for, but all she knew was that she fell asleep after a while only to be awoken with a very angry Alex.
"What the fuck are you doing here?!" Alex was more than shocked to wake up with his arms wrapped around her and her hands entangled in his curls.
"You were sick so I-"
Mia tried to explain between yawns but Alex was having none of it.
"Get out!" He didn't even let her finish and Mia felt her patience run out.
What was wrong with him? She only wanted to help.
"You have no right to talk to me like that young man!" She retorted, sitting up with veins popping on the side of her head. She had only tried to help yet he was acting like she was a nuisance.
Alex was thrown aback. Blinking once then twice, he recovered himself.
"Fine, I'll leave then." He made his way to the door in a bid to escape her presence.
"Not so fast, Alpha Alex!"
Mia hopped out of bed and ran towards him, jumping in his way.
Alex stared down at her with his forehead furrowed. How did she move so fast?
"Your wounds are surprisingly healed, but that doesn't mean you can just leave without being well treated. Now go back to bed and lie on it!" She commanded in a motherly tone, pointing at his bed.
Alex peered down at her, dumbfounded.
"Did you not hear a word I just said?" Mia asked, still standing in his way.
Alex wanted to fight and argue but he knew he'd lose the battle. He was still very weak even though his wounds had healed.
He walked back to his bed as instructed and got under the covers, staring at her as she approached him with a proud smile on her lips.
"Such a good boy," She cooed happily, grinning ear to ear at her achievement.
"I'm not your dog," Alex retorted angrily but she waved him off.
"Look, it's dark. I wonder for how long we slept." She pointed at the windows.
Alex ignored her, rolling his eyes.
"Hendrix said you got attacked in the woods, what happened?" She asked, sounding really worried and Alex was tempted to tell her the truth before he caught himself.
He kept mute.
"And now he's dumb."
She stared at him with sarcasm dripping down from her words. "Just when I felt he couldn't get any worse, he proves me wrong and becomes deaf and dumb."
Alex thinned his lips and remained quiet to Mia's continuous taunting.
"I get that you were weak and couldn't stay for the wedding but I sure as hell don't understand why you refused to kiss me." She didn't even try to hide her anger and hurt, she was like an open book.
He still kept quiet, staring at her from the comfort of his bed while she stood there in dismay, ranting. It felt nice just watching her.
"Just so you know, I'm not leaving here until you answer my questions." And she had every plan to keep to her words
They stayed together in mostly silence all through the night.
Well, Mia couldn't stay quiet for too long and she started talking to her self in the mirror while Alex watched her in hidden amusement before he finally went into a peaceful sleep.
••••••••••
The next morning, Mia woke up to an empty room and she swore under her breath, getting on her feet.
She was to have breakfast with Alex while her parents did in the guest house. She hadn't seen them since the day before and she was grateful for that because she couldn't stand the pity in their eyes.
She went down for breakfast and saw Alex already seated behind the large mahogany table in a black vest that hugged the right places with disheveled hair.
"So, are you ready to answer my questions?" She broke the thick silence as they ate.
Alex ignored her for the umpteenth time that morning, looking at anywhere but her face.
"I'm talking to you!"
She hated being ignored and he seemed to enjoy doing just that. She stared at him, pouting.
Alex got up from his chair and dropped his fork, causing it to make a loud sound when it hit the plate. He cast an expressionless look at her and then exited the dining room, barely even tasting his roasted potatoes and lamb chops.
Mia sighed in frustration. What had she gotten herself into?
