Chapter 98: Chapter 98

Jessica could feel a pain surge up her blood, almost turning to anger.

"Listen to you?! Oh, why would I ever want to listen to any of you?" She demanded.

Roy was taken aback. "Calm down, Jessica. We're in a public place, and you're a big shot now."

Jessica turned her gaze away. She knew she couldn't control her emotions, they always got the better part of her, especially when she was faced with a matter that struck two antonymous emotions. Love and Hate. Joy and pain. The need to know and the fear of not knowing. She was quiet finally.

Exhaling lightly, Roy began to question her.

"Why did you leave?" He began. "It was too sudden. Your disappearance, I mean."

"Then you return six years later with a set of twins and you simply thought you could hide them from their father?"

"Have you seen Edwin's childhood picture? He looks exactly like your son. The only difference would be his eyes. They're just like yours."

"That was the missing link. I didn't think to involve you while trying to solve the enigma."

"What does it matter?"

"Huh?" Roy asked in confusion.

"What does it matter?" She asked again. "After all, I'm just a bet."

Roy's eyes widened in surprise. He stared hard at her. What did she mean by she was just a bet? Did she-?

"I heard everything., " Jessica confirmed. "I heard everything you guys said that night. I was there at the bar when you guys were talking. I heard him clearly when he said sleeping with me was a bet. I heard everything, Roy. How did you expect me to feel?"

"Did you expect me to run into his arms and beg him to love me?"

"Did you expect me to return and inform him that I had a set of twins for him?"

"Do you know how I felt that night, after giving the man I loved my body and soul, only to hear him brag about how he fulfilled a bet."

"How did he prove that I was like other women who would pull off their panties while flaunting his money?"

"Do you know how much I cried?" Jessica demanded. "How then did you expect me to tell him about my kids? I was only a bet. I was only in his life for the sake of his ego. He couldn't stand the fact that I refused him, so he used underhanded means to make sure I accepted him."

"You expect me to go back to him and pretend all is well?"

"You're selfish!" She yelled at him.

Roy was calm all the while. It was surprising how she had disappeared. But now that she told him, he understood her completely. She must have been very heartbroken after hearing those words. Still, if she had stuck around a little longer, she would have heard a soothing part of Edwin's speech.

He shook his head a little. Jessica saw that he was speechless. She smirked a little despite her sadness.

"Jessica... Did you hear the entire conversation?" He asked softly.

Jessica stared at him silently, compelling him to speak.

"You didn't. You didn't hear the rest of the conversation."

"What difference does it make?" She scoffed.

"Perhaps if you had heard the rest of it, you would have understood that Edwin was also in love with you," Roy said.

Jessica's gaze shook a bit. As hard and firm as she willed it to be, hearing that Edwin loved her cracked her resolve.

"Jessica, after you had left, Edwin started chanting about how he loved you. How sweet you were and how you made him feel inside. He spoke so much about you, it felt as if it was your birthday and not mine."

"He even told us that he told his mother about you. He had told her that he was in love with you already. Perhaps because he might have been planning to marry you."

"Jessica, Edwin's mom is aware of his feelings for you. He was ready to stick with you. You should have confronted him with what you heard. Perhaps all this could have been avoided."

"Also, was that the reason you didn't tell him about the kids? Even after returning, you still couldn't talk to him?"

Jessica looked away. She turned him out. He was still talking and talking about the other things which Edwin had said about his feelings for her. She was overwhelmed by the emotions she felt. She couldn't take it anymore.

Jessica stood up abruptly and left. Roy didn't call her back. He could guess how she felt. For Jessica, the feeling was overwhelming. She had agreed to come here with the intention of speaking her mind. That too I'm very firm.

Now here she was, walking as fast as she could away from the cafe, and not even up to thirty minutes later, just because she found out the truth about Edwin's feelings for her.

Was it really true anyway? Could Roy be lying as well? He didn't seem like he was lying. He seemed very convinced about it. He had the conviction of one who was present at the conversation. Jessica blinked severally.

Why did her own love life have to be so full of ups and downs? Mostly downs too. Should she have really stayed longer to listen to Edwin speak?

Jessica didn't want to take any cab home. She needed time to clear her head before reaching home. One was that she knew she owed Angie an explanation, so if she appeared troubled to Angela and the kids, it would spark a reaction from them.

She spent the rest of the time on the journey, clearing her head and freeing herself from the choking thoughts. Her revenge was very important to her. It was a little late to be hearing all these explanations. Why were they coming six years after anyway?
