Chapter 284: Chapter 284
The night was not deep, yet it was very dark, accompanied by bursts of cold wind.
An imposing off-road motorcycle sped down the desolate suburban highway. Due to years of neglect, the surface of this suburban road was full of potholes. It looked decrepit. The motorcycle, bumping along on it, was extremely unsteady. This made Su Yan, who was sitting behind Sister Zhou, involuntarily bounce up and down, resulting in a very uncomfortable ride.
"Sister Zhou, didn’t you say you were an experienced driver? Why are you driving so slowly?" Su Yan, who was riding behind Sister Zhou, suddenly spoke out, expressing his dissatisfaction with her slow speed.
Sister Zhou explained, "This darn road is just too full of holes. Driving too fast could easily cause an accident. And I was worried that going too fast would make the ride uncomfortable for you."
Su Yan immediately responded, "Sister Zhou, you underestimate me. I’m in good shape; I won’t feel uncomfortable. Don’t worry about me. Go faster, I can handle it."
Seeing that Su Yan insisted, Sister Zhou didn’t hold back anymore. She went full throttle, speeding up dramatically.
「About ten minutes later.」
Sister Zhou stopped the motorcycle and said to Su Yan behind her, "Brother Yan, that old mansion is inside the forest. The motorcycle can only go this far."
"How much farther is it?"
"Not too far. About a ten-minute walk should get us there."
"Then let’s get off and walk over."
After saying that, Su Yan got off the motorcycle first and surveyed the surroundings.
The night was thick, with no moonlight. One could clearly feel strands of Yin Energy permeating the air, making it an ideal breeding ground for Demons and Monsters and Yin entities.
Sister Zhou hid the off-road motorcycle in a spot where it was unlikely to be discovered and said, "Brother Yan, the bike is parked. Let’s go."
Su Yan nodded and then added, "By the way, Sister Zhou, stop calling me Brother Yan from now on. You’re older than me; it sounds odd."
"Then... what should I call you?" Sister Zhou looked at Su Yan and asked.
To be honest, she didn’t like calling him Brother Yan either, finding it rather awkward. But not knowing what else to call him, she had stuck with "Brother" as a sign of respect. ᴛʜɪs ᴄʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀ ɪs ᴜᴘᴅᴀᴛᴇ ʙʏ novelFire.net
"What’s a good name to use..." Su Yan pondered for a moment, then looked toward Sister Zhou and asked, "What do you think I should be called?"
"I... I don’t know either."
"Well then, how about you just call me ’Daddy’ from now on."
Sister Zhou stared at him, momentarily stunned.
"Just kidding. Just call me by my name from now on," Su Yan said. "After all, my name is just two characters; it’s very easy on the tongue."
After a brief struggle with the form of address, under Sister Zhou’s lead, Su Yan plunged into the forest, so dark one could barely see their hand in front of their face. As they walked, Su Yan asked Sister Zhou, "Last time when Lu Xiaolong and his group were watching me, you mentioned something about the Yin Yang Union. Is that some kind of special organization?"
Sister Zhou replied with a wry smile, "You might not believe this, but I really don’t know what kind of organization it is, just that it has considerable power. That’s about all I know; I’m completely clueless about anything else."
"Completely clueless about anything else?" Su Yan frowned slightly and then asked, "But didn’t you say last time that you were a member of the Yin Yang Union?"
Sister Zhou smiled wryly again. "I just did some temporary work for the organization once, and then, just like Lu Xiaolong said, I rode on the coattails of that title to scare others."
Hearing Sister Zhou explain this, Su Yan’s frown deepened. He continued to press, "Can you talk about the temporary job?"
Seeing Su Yan’s curiosity, Sister Zhou candidly responded, "There’s not much to it; it was more like being a delivery person than a temporary worker. Someone from the Yin Yang Union who called themselves a Puppet Master commissioned me to deliver a box to an abandoned construction site. Upon completion, I would be compensated with five cloth dolls—the same Strange Doll you saw that night."
With some confusion, Su Yan asked, "You didn’t understand the organization, and yet you dared to work for them? Weren’t you afraid of being conned?"
Sister Zhou chuckled. "That’s where you’re uninformed. The Yin Yang Union is well-regarded among seasoned members of the Monster Hunter Circle; they oftentimes recruit folks for some temporary work. Successfully completing a job secures a generous reward, like the Strange Doll I mentioned. So far, I haven’t heard of anyone being duped."
Su Yan nodded and then continued, "Have you ever heard of the Paper Taoist?"
After pondering for a moment, Sister Zhou shook her head. "I’ve never heard of them."
"Is that so..." Su Yan furrowed his brow, persisting, "It’s said that this Paper Taoist was live streaming on either Tiger Fish or Fight Tiger platform, selling Paper Humans. Are you certain you’ve never heard of this?"
Sister Zhou affirmed, "I’m sure. I’ve really never heard of it."
After receiving such a certain answer from Sister Zhou, Su Yan’s perplexity intensified. Logically speaking, someone who frequently live-streamed and sold Paper Humans as a member of the Yin Yang Union should have a significant reputation. What was going on?
Thinking this, Su Yan further questioned, "Sister Zhou, have you ever heard of a Giant Alien Beast crawling out of mirrors or window glass?"
Sister Zhou gave Su Yan a puzzled glance, somewhat at a loss as to why he was asking so many unusual questions.
