Chapter 766: Chapter 766
This was the great rift valley that Xiang Yi had mentioned earlier, stretching endlessly ahead and blocking the way forward.
The rift valley was unfathomably deep, its bottom nowhere in sight, and the opposite side completely obscured. A constant stream of Purple Mist surged upward from the depths, forming a rising air current. That area was likely the source of the poisonous mist.
A wisp of Devilish Flames of Nine Hells flickered in Qin Sang’s palm, and the flame pointed straight into the valley.
Qin Sang crouched and leaned forward slightly.
At once, a burst of air rushed into his face. The impact caused the Poison-Warding Armor on his body to tremble.
Startled, Qin Sang quickly pulled back and looked at the fat silkworm, a hint of worry in his eyes.
They were still at the top of the rift valley, and already the armor was shaking. To search for the spiritual fire, he would have to descend the cliff face, constantly exposed to the poisonous mist.
And the poison below would only grow more intense.
If the silkworm failed to endure it, they might not even get the chance to escape.
Fortunately, the fat silkworm showed no signs of strain. It opened its mouth and released a halo of light. A new layer immediately thickened the Poison-Warding Armor on Qin Sang, keeping him completely unharmed.
"Be quicker next time!"
Qin Sang glared at the silkworm and let out a sigh of relief before leaning out once more.
The fat silkworm blinked its small eyes, looking a little aggrieved.
This time, the Purple Mist clashed against the Poison-Warding Armor and was completely blocked. Qin Sang bent forward and looked down. The cliff face was not smooth but uneven, offering footholds. He nodded silently.
Dropping straight into the valley on his sword would clearly be reckless. A rapid descent could easily startle any nearby ferocious beasts.
Within the Purple Mist End, many creatures had adapted to the poisonous mist. The rift valley almost certainly contained such beasts as well, and without a doubt, the closer one got to the source, the stronger they would be.
Qin Sang recalled that Xiang Yi had once said some suspected the depths of the valley housed ferocious beasts comparable to Transformation Realm great demons.
He stood at the edge for a while and listened carefully. Apart from the whooshing of the mist, no beastly cries could be heard. All was silent below.
He walked some distance along the edge in both directions. The scene was similar everywhere, thick mist at the bottom, indistinct no matter the angle of descent.
After a moment of thought, Qin Sang recalled the Two-Headed Hou into the Primordial Unity Ring and cautiously began climbing down into the rift. ʀᴇᴀᴅ ʟᴀᴛᴇsᴛ ᴄʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀs ᴀᴛ novelFɪre.net
The cliffside stone felt bone-chilling. Qin Sang used both hands and feet to descend.
Few had ever come here, and there was no path to follow. Qin Sang had to rely entirely on himself.
At first, he moved slowly and remained alert.
But after descending for a while without encountering danger, and with the rift appearing bottomless, he realized that continuing at this pace would waste too much time. He had no choice but to speed up.
“It’s been nearly fifteen minutes, and I’m still not at the bottom. The Purple Mist is getting thicker. At this depth, Xiang Yi’s Bone Lotus and that young man’s jade bangle probably couldn’t hold out. But the fat silkworm remains completely at ease. What a pleasant surprise.”
Standing on a ledge, Qin Sang lifted his sleeve and gave the silkworm an approving look.
This experience had proven the silkworm’s resistance. It was now clear that beasts at the Demonic Core Realm could not penetrate the Poison-Warding Armor. The only question was whether it could withstand the poison of a Transformation Realm great demon.
The silkworm had just completed its third metamorphosis, and already the armor had such power. If he could find a suitable method to cultivate it, greater surprises were sure to come.
After a short rest, Qin Sang continued his descent. He had gone down only a few zhang when he suddenly paused and looked down to the right, startled.
Through the surging mist, he could faintly make out the silhouette of a gnarled tree, growing horizontally from the cliff wall.
The tree appeared withered, bearing no branches or leaves, only a thick trunk. Yet at the treetop hung dozens of fruits, swaying lightly in the poisonous breeze.
“There are spiritual fruits growing in the Purple Mist End? Are they spiritual fruits... or poisonous ones?”
Qin Sang glanced at the fat silkworm.
Back in the underground palace beneath Black Wind Valley, the silkworm had been drawn to the Thousand-Hand Spider Fruit and eagerly consumed an unripe one. Now, however, it showed no reaction.
Qin Sang halted and stared at the tree, examining it carefully. It seemed there were no beasts guarding it.
After a moment of thought, he silently moved toward the tree. But after only two steps, he froze and locked his eyes on the so-called fruits at the tree’s crown.
Those were no fruits. They were some kind of vicious bird, hanging upside down like bats, fast asleep!
Their wings were folded tight, their bodies round and plump. They swayed gently with the wind, looking like fruits from afar. But in truth, they were unknown ferocious birds, and there were dozens of them.
It seemed there were more such trees further below.
Small size meant nothing. Qin Sang had no intention of provoking them.
Holding his breath, he slowly retreated and took a detour. Along the way, he spotted more of them, some clinging to trees, others tucked in rock crevices.
Cold sweat beaded on his forehead. From then on, he grew even more cautious.
Fortunately, clusters like these were rare. After descending to an unknown depth, Qin Sang finally felt solid ground beneath his feet.
Qin Sang slowly let out a breath and perked up his ears to listen. The surroundings remained eerily calm. It even sounded quieter down here at the bottom of the rift than it had above.
He pressed his foot down firmly. Beneath him was solid stone.
Once again, he summoned the Devilish Flames of Nine Hells. The flame now pointed clearly to the left front, its flickers livelier than ever, burning with excitement. It felt much more spirited than it had been back on Cold Flame Island.
Qin Sang couldn’t make sense of it. He shook his head and summoned the Two-Headed Hou.
Man and beast proceeded with utmost caution, moving forward in silence.
The bottom of the rift valley was far wider than expected. Even though Qin Sang was traveling diagonally, he had covered a considerable distance without ever reaching the opposite cliff face.
Guided by the Devilish Flames of Nine Hells, Qin Sang moved carefully through the poisonous mist of the rift, advancing step by step while constantly monitoring the state of the fat silkworm.
The silkworm was no longer as relaxed as before. It crouched halfway out of his sleeve, its body slightly arched and its expression solemn. It had already released several puffs of seven-colored halos to reinforce the Poison-Warding Armor.
Each time it did so, the light in its eyes dimmed a little more. At this rate, it wouldn’t be long before it reached its limit.
Suddenly, the silkworm let out a series of urgent hisses and quickly crawled out from Qin Sang’s sleeve, perching on the back of his hand. It raised its upper body, its gaze urgent, voice filled with longing.
Startled, Qin Sang immediately understood that the silkworm had caught the scent of something beneficial to it.
Is there something within the depths of the Purple Mist that drew its interest?
Considering the Crimson Fire Gilded Gold, the Thousand-Hand Spider Fruit, and the poison cores of demonic beasts—all of which were toxic—it wasn’t surprising that some poisonous object within the Purple Mist End could attract the silkworm.
The silkworm stretched out its plump little body with effort and pointed to the left, which was not in the same direction Qin Sang had originally been heading.
Qin Sang looked around, paused for a moment in thought, then decided to follow the silkworm’s lead.
Even if he found the spiritual fire, the chances of subduing it right away were slim. At most, he could refine another Flame Orb and would still have to plan slowly over time. But if he could acquire something that helped the silkworm grow, the benefits would be immediate.
The silkworm was already showing signs of strain.
Having made his decision, Qin Sang changed direction and quickened his pace. The silkworm instantly became excited.
There were no ferocious beasts obstructing the way, so Qin Sang moved faster and faster, dashing through the open expanse of the valley. The silkworm’s body remained taut as it strained to maintain the Poison-Warding Armor, both for Qin Sang’s sake, and for its own.
