Chapter 37: Chapter 37

He waited patiently after ringing the doorbell twice. It was well past dinnertime and he couldn't understand where the family could have gone. He was about to ring the doorbell again when the door opened and Victoria peeped at him with a nervous expression on her face. She gaped at him, seeing him suddenly at their doorstep.

"Where's Sofia?" Asked Davion impatiently, trying to open the door further to go inside. If he could, he would have stormed inside and met Sofia. He knew that he could win her over if he met her once.

"She doesn't want to talk to you. She's locked herself in after seeing you from her window," said a scared Victoria. She didn't know how to deal with the furious-looking Davion. Truth was that Sofia had been sitting at her window when she saw Davion approaching the house. She pushed Victoria forward, telling her at the last minute when the doorbell rang. Victoria had no time to even compose her nerves and decide what she would tell him.

"What the hell! I've been traveling all day non-stop just to see her and now she refuses to meet me?" Said Davion bitterly. Victoria looked angry at his outburst.

"Isn't that a result of your own misdeeds?" Asked Victoria with a scowl. Their mom came out and opened the door wide and smiled at him. Davion was relieved that at least someone was still friendly in Sofia's house!

"Please come inside, Davion. Let's talk to Sofia. I'm sure that she'll come around," said their mom. She led him to the living room and asked Victoria to go upstairs and call Sofia. Davion felt relieved and sat down with her mom and waited for her to come down.

Hearing him, their dad too came out but looked at Davion with anger. "We've sent you the divorce papers, Davion. What are you doing here? There's nothing to talk about after what you've done to my daughter. I trusted you with her," said a hurt Gregory Blakesley. Davion's mouth hung open at the accusations. He realized that they all had misunderstood him just like Sofia had.

"Please, Mr. Blakesley, you're accusing me falsely without giving me a chance to defend myself. I'm at fault, I accept but my only fault is misunderstanding Sofia and neglecting her for a month. I haven't betrayed Sofia, believe me. I'm sure we can sort the misunderstanding with a talk. I won't give Sofia a divorce. We love one another," said Davion, trying to put some sense in her dad's mind at least. He had no idea how things deteriorated so fast that they were contemplating divorce.

"I don't believe you. A picture speaks more than words do. I think you should leave, " her dad growled with anger, not wanting to even listen to his side of the story. Davion was upset beyond words. He could understand Sofia's sentiments, she was hurt but what about her dad? He was a mature adult, shouldn't he behave like the lawyer he was? Victoria came rushing down with a scowl on her face and Davion immediately understood that Sofia wasn't coming downstairs to see him.

"Mom, Sofia's threatening to commit suicide if Davion didn't leave now," she said, looking panicked and scared. Her mom glanced at Davion with frightened eyes. Davion's heart stopped and he looked pale hearing Victoria's words with disbelief. At that point, he realized what he had done. He shouldn't have dragged this so long, he should have cleared things before leaving for New York. In fact, he could have taken her along to New York. Then they would still have been together.

"Oh, my God! Davion I'm sorry, Sofi's in a very vulnerable state. I can't afford to lose my daughter. She's very stubborn. I know she'll do something which we'll both regret," said Sofia's mom. Davion whirled around and stormed out of the house. He would come another time when things cooled down. He drove off to his apartment not having the wish to see Colton right now. He needed to be alone for a while. Sofia's threat had hurt him deeply. How could she think of killing herself when she had his baby in her womb? Did she not at all care for the baby too?

Victoria and her mom banged on Sofia's door sick with worry. "Davion has left Sofi, please open the door," yelled Victoria. After five minutes, a haggard Sofia opened the door with tears in her eyes. Their mom pulled her into her arms.

"Don't even think of pulling such a stunt, ever. You aren't alone anymore, Sofi. You have a baby growing inside you. You don't have the right to take its life before it even saw the light of the world," scolded her mom. Sofia wept brokenly.

"He betrayed my love, mom. He doesn't want me and my baby. Then why had he come here?" She said in between sobs.

"Only Davion can answer why he came here. You have to listen to what he has to say," explained her mom.

"No, I have already served him the divorce papers. I don't want anything to do with him," said Sofia vehement and aggressive, ready to fight anyone who dared to oppose.

Their mom glanced at Victoria to quieten her. "I'm sure he'll sign the papers after talking to you for the last time, " said their mom.

"I don't have anything to say to him, not even for the last time. He's welcome to have thousands of affairs. I'm done with him. I've released him," said Sofia, walking towards her en-suite as a bout of nausea again hit her.  Her mom sighed and went to help her. She knew that Sofia was stubborn and would never listen to her when in this mood. So she decided to let Sofia calm down and then speak to her. It was easy to break a relationship but it takes years to build one.

Davion again tried to see her the whole of next week but it was the repeat of the same thing again and again. The last time, the Blakesleys hadn't even allowed him inside. He was deeply hurt and insulted by their behavior. It was as if he was being punished for a small fault of his. Even a criminal gets a chance to defend himself but it seemed as if he was worse than a criminal.

Frustrated, he returned to his apartment every day. He was at his wit's end already. Nine days of his twenty-day time limit had been spent just trying to talk to Sofia. He had to sign the divorce papers within twenty days else he knew that Sofia would be able to proceed with the divorce as an uncontested divorce. So the only way left for him was to talk her out of it and cancel the petition. His work suffered as he just couldn't concentrate upon anything. As the days passed by, the more restless he became. Still, Davion didn't give up hope. If her family wouldn't interfere and prevented him from seeing her, he would have barged inside her room and cleared up the misunderstanding a long time back. All he needed was just a glimpse of her.

However, Sofia's condition again deteriorated and she was again admitted to the hospital. With her parents present with her all the time, it was impossible for Davion to even catch a glimpse of her. He waited outside the hospital night and day for an opportunity to talk to Sofia. It was useless talking to her family members as they hated the sight of him and avoided him like a plague. Her dad had thrown Davion out like trash the last time he had visited. Davion was lost and upset and on the verge of losing his head. He knew that he had wronged Sofia by neglecting her but apart from that he hadn't done any other crime. He hadn't betrayed Sofia and just needed a chance to explain that to her. He had no idea of what was wrong with Sofia as no one agreed to talk to him. It was frustrating as Victoria too avoided him just like her parents did.

After three days, Sofia was released and taken back home. The next few days, Davion tried his best to approach her but when he failed to even enter her house, he broke down on her doorsteps. What would he do now? He just couldn't sit and wait for Sofia to be granted a divorce. He would rather die than grant her a divorce. With only a day remaining of his time limit, he lost all hope and decided to return back to Reno, to his empty house.

He knew that his life was ruined and he could never be able to piece it together. With Sofia gone forever from his life, he dragged his feet into a house that held no charm at all for him now. Greta hadn't come as she wasn't aware of his sudden plans. Davion was thankful since he wasn't in the frame of mind to meet and talk to anyone.
