Chapter 32: Chapter 32

Chapter 32

Michelle has been quiet for days. She stayed in her room drowning in her sorrow and has refused to eat or do anything. It was like she was in a dream, as she still couldn’t believe that Nathan would do such a thing to her. How could he betray her like that?

She gave him a chance because he promised to be there for her, but that was all a lie to get her. She was just a game.

Was Nathan the reason Chloe suddenly stopped talking to her?

How could she be so stupid to not have suspected a thing?

She trusted him. She believed every word he said, but it was all a façade.

Derek would never do such a thing to her. They would argue sometimes, but cheating was out of the question. She should never have accepted to be Nathan’s girlfriend. What was she thinking? That he would be single all his life, waiting for her, when she had no knowledge of his feelings for her? She should never have left Derek, Michelle kept repeating in her head.

Leah was hurting seeing her daughter in such state without being able to comfort her, because Michelle doesn’t want to see anyone, not even her baby. She didn’t bother to look at Sandra after the night she came home crying. Leah has been the one taking care of Sandra. She couldn’t even ask Michelle how she got back her memory. Leah decided not to ask her a thing, because bringing up the topic of Derek and Nathan was going to hurt her even more.

Nathan has been coming over to try to talk to Michelle, Leah didn’t let him in. She was disappointed in him. She thought he was a responsible man, but he was only pretending. She hopes her daughter, Michelle recovers from this really soon, because Sandra needs her mother.

Derek hasn’t heard from Michelle after their argument the other day at his place. He still couldn’t believe that she got her memory back due to her head colliding with the door. He has been trying to give her a call, but her phone is switched off. He had wanted to pay her a visit, but changed her mind, because he didn’t want to get into another fight with Nathan. He hoped she hasn’t gotten into any argument with Nathan because of him.

Derek was less busy, so he decided to go see his parents. He hasn’t seen them in a while now. He got to the family house and found both his parents in the living room. He was relieved to find his father at home, because he didn’t want to be alone with his mom. The atmosphere would’ve been awkward because they now hardly spoke to each other.

“It’s a surprise to see you here” Rebecca excitedly said

She was happy to see her son again. She went to him and gave him a hug, because she knew he wouldn’t refuse due to his father’s presence.

“I’m so happy that my baby decided to pay us a visit” she said into the hug, glad that he hugged back.

“Hi mom” he greeted after the hug

It has been a long time since Rebecca was this affectionate with her son. She was relieved that he still acknowledges her as his mother.

Derek walked to the couch where his father was and sat beside him.

“Hi dad”

“How are you doing, son?”

“I’m fine”

“Would you like to have anything?” Rebecca asked

“No, mom. I’m good”

“Still, I insist. You should at least have a drink, you’re home” Rebecca persuaded, calling for a maid to get a drink for Derek before taking a seat herself.

“Have you heard anything from your brother, Nathan?” Mr. Howard asked

“No, why?”

“I’ve been trying to reach him, but he isn’t picking any of my calls” Mr. Howard said, making Derek worry.

He tried not to show his worry so his parents wouldn’t notice. He wasn’t able to reach Michelle and now he is hearing that Nathan isn’t picking his calls.

“He told me he would accompany me on my business trip to New York, so he would inspect the affairs of his company there… I tried calling, to remind him about it, because we are to leave in a few days”

“Okay” was all Derek could say

Then they heard the door bell. The butler went to get the door. Derek was hoping it would be Nathan, but to his surprise, it was Leah, Michelle’s mother. She looked really angry.

“It’s a good thing you’re all present, that would save me the stress of having to see you all separately” Leah said

They were all confused at her statement. Derek was more concerned, as he hoped something bad hasn’t happened to Michelle.

“Look here… I haven’t said a thing about how you treat my daughter, not because I don’t know what to do, but for Michelle’s sake… beginning from this day, I don’t want you anywhere near my family. Your family’s wealth means nothing to us because we have our own money” Leah said, staring daggers at Rebecca.

“What is the meaning of this?” Rebecca questioned, standing on her feet, already angry that Leah was threatening her family in their own home.

“Shut up and sit down!” Leah angrily said to Rebecca, who obeyed almost immediately.

“You’ve made my daughter’s life miserable. I don’t want to see you or anyone else from your family anywhere close to Michelle or Sandra, unless you’re ready to face the consequences, and I mean it… I don’t care what length I have to go to make your lives unbearable, as it is for my daughter” Leah threatened

“You have no right to deprive us of our grandchild” Rebecca countered

“Oh, watch me” Leah said and angrily walked out of the house.

They were all in shock. Derek kept on wondering what must’ve happened between Nathan and Michelle. Leah presence only meant that they actually got into a fight.

“I need to go see Nathan” Rebecca said, bringing Derek out of his thoughts.

She hurriedly left their presence and asked a maid to tell her chauffeur to get one of her cars ready.

“Do you have any idea what that was all about?” Mr. Howard asked, not being able to take the surprise off his face.

“No” Derek replied, wondering why Leah was that angry.

He had never seen her angry.

Rebecca got to Nathan’s house. She walked in and saw her baby in the living room with his face buried in his hands. She felt sad seeing him looking so helpless. She quietly sat beside him and placed her hand on his back, startling him. He relaxed after seeing that it was his mom.

“What’s wrong, baby?” she carefully asked

“I hurt Michelle, mom… I cheated on her. It’s a mistake I regret so much, now she doesn’t want to see me ever again… she broke off our engagement” Nathan cried

“Honey, that’s for the best. She is finally out of our lives for good. You should be happy about that”

“How can you say such a thing?”

“I’m only saying the truth... She never deserved to be a part of our family… now, all we have to think about is, how to take Sandra away from her”

Nathan was infuriated by his mom’s statement.

“It’s time I told you this, aunt… I don’t need you, or your stupid advise. Get out of my house and never come back!” Nathan said, yelling the last part.

Rebecca was shocked at Nathan’s outburst. Her eyes were wide with surprise. This is the first time in years, after his parents accident that Nathan was addressing her as aunt and it hurt her feelings. She shook her head, trying to erase her shocked expression, then she sighed.

“I know you’re just saying this because you’re sad. Don’t worry, you'll get over it”

“I said leave me alone!.. I hate you!” He yelled, causing her to move away from him.

“I’ll be back when you feel better, okay? Bye sweetie” she said, placing a kiss on his head before leaving.

Rebecca felt horrible leaving Nathan like that, but he needed to be alone at that point, so he could clear his head. She was going to check on him when he must’ve calmed down.
