Chapter 72: Chapter 72
RUBY.
Toby abruptly stood up from the couch when Yasmin mentioned her baby's name. He walked toward the door and then in the opposite direction when he seemed to have realised that he wasn't dressed to go out. He rushed up the stairs while I listened to Yasmin blurt a whole lot of rubbish.
"His first name is Toby, his middle name is Daniels and his last name is Blake. Nothing out of the ordinary there," she replied. The reporter had stated that her son had quite a usual name.
"So the name is not a clue to who the father might be?"
"My son's name is his name, can we move on from this topic now."
"Okay, let's talk about Yasmin Blake. Are you still on maternity leave or are you back now?"
"Yasmin Blake is back baby."
"Great! So what are you working on?"
"A whole lot, I would love to continue working with the fabulous Cara Daniel if she would have me and I have two movie roles in the works. As usual, I can't give up all the details but …"
"I have some errands to run, I'll be right back," Toby said, taking my attention off what I was watching. He was now wearing black joggers with a matching hoodie, he had sun shades in one hand, even though it wasn't sunny and his car keys in the other. He slipped his keys into his pockets, slipped the hood over his head and put his sunglasses on. The perfect disguise, I'm sure he didn't want the media getting a whiff of him going to see Yasmin and his child. He didn't wait till I gave a reply before he went bounding out the door.
The sound of the door slamming shut startled Jeremy awake and he let out a cry. I lifted him and held him against my chest. I patted him on the back but he wouldn't go back to sleep, I lowered him so I could look into his big blue eyes. He was so cute and innocent.
"Well guess what Jeremy, you've got a brother," I said to my son. He gurgled and I gave him a wide smile. "Mhmm, yes you do, you've got yourself a little brother, you are older by a whole week and his mother is…" I slapped a hand across my mouth before I could say she was a crazy bitch.
After I found out Yasmin was pregnant and then I found that I was pregnant. I was too busy panicking about my pregnancy to think about hers. When things had calmed down a little after the whole drama with Aiden I woke up one morning and wondered where the hell she had gone. It was like she had vanished into thin air. I summoned up the courage and asked Toby about her but he just froze up. He looked sad as he stared at my belly, then straight into my eyes and said, "she's recuperating."
"She lost the baby?" I asked when what he said dawned on me. He nodded but the guilt in his eyes afterwards told me there was more to it. He couldn't look at me straight for the rest of that day.
Yasmin sure played a fast one on everyone. She was good at this game. Now that she was back things would be different. Jeremy, Toby and I had been living in our little bubble but now that was over. Would Clara even be as nice to me now that one of her favourite people had also given her a grandchild?
"Imagine if I had let him name you Toby, there would have been two Toby Daniels," I said to Jeremy. His eyes were drooping closed but he was struggling to keep them open, he was an interesting sight. Toby got his wish, after all, he had a son named after him. I went up to bed with a sleeping Jeremy, I might as well sleep away this unexplainable sadness I felt. I placed him in his bassinet and settled in bed.
I was startled awake by my phone ringing, I searched for it under the covers in a daze. I finally found it on the third ring and picked up the call.
"Hello," I said, then cleared my throat because my voice sounds scratchy to my ears.
"Hey sis, did you watch that show, the one with Yasmin as a guest," Sapphire said.
"Your nephew is fine, and I'm doing great too," I said sarcastically.
"I'm sorry but I couldn't go through any formalities with such a huge issue on the table."
"So asking after our well-being has become a formality?" I asked tersely. She wasn't the source of my problems but here I was transferring my aggression to her.
"I didn't mean it like that," she sighed, she didn't speak for a while, it seemed like she was trying to choose her words carefully because of how I was acting." I just wanted to find out if you saw the interview and ask how you were holding up, that's all."
"Sorry for being short with you, I just woke up from sleep and yes I saw the interview."
"Okay, is it just me or did you also conclude that Toby is the father of her baby."
"If not Toby, who would it be?" I asked. I took a peek at Jeremy who was surprisingly still asleep.
"I don't know how people are being so blind to the obvious when she clearly said it with the whole we've been friends for a long time and my son's name is Toby Daniel Blake. She might have as well put a hyphen between Daniel and Blake or called him Toby Blake, a hyphen, Daniel, so he could have one last name. At this point, the boy has no middle name, just two last names. The only thing more glaring would have been if she just straight out announced Toby as the father because what the hell was that rubbish she pulled," Sapphire ranted.
"So nobody is making the connection, huh?"
"Of course they are, but their opinions won't matter until its proven, and how do you feel about the whole thing?"
"I don't know, knowing she's back to torment my life, it's just depressing. I don't feel as special since he also has another don out there, I guess?"
"Nonsense, you are not the old Ruby. You won't let her torment you, you'll dish out whatever she serves right back at her. Plus your son came out first, he is Toby's heir."
"I don't care about who the heir is but you are right, I am Ruby and absolutely no one is going to toss me around." Not Yasmin, not Clara and not Lola.
"That's the spirit! You go girl!"
"Thank you so much, Sapphire." This call was really what I didn't know I needed.
"It's nothing, sis, I have to go now but we will talk later."
"Okay, bye."
"Bye darling, kiss my baby for me." The Line went dead and I fell back in bed. I was half asleep when another call came through.
"Hello," I said but there was no reply, just creepy heavy breathing on the other end of the line.
