Chapter 58: Chapter 58
RUBY.
When I woke up the next morning the severity of what was happening dawned on me within seconds. Last night I didn't have time to process things because the exact moment I found out I was pregnant was when Toby confronted us about it. I wonder how I would have told him about the pregnancy if he didn't find out in that manner, probably have dragged it for as long as I could but oh well that was off my head now. I could deal with bigger issues.
Yes, I was opposed to abortion but at the same time, I can't see myself raising a child with Toby. I feel more like a single mother at this point. He said such hurtful things last night, I will blame it on the hormones but after he left I could not help myself, I broke down in inconsolable tears in Sapphire's arms. I needed to be stronger. Sapphire would not always be here for me to cry on and now a baby was involved. I would not be like my mother, I would be strong for myself and my child that was my resolve.
"Breakfast in bed for a queen," Sapphire said from my door. She entered the room with a large tray that made her small frame look even smaller. It was almost comical.
"Good morning sis, thank you for this, thank you for everything," I said, tearing up again. "These damn hormones."
"Good morning my love, you don't have to mention it. Please don't," she said setting the large tray In front of me.
"What's even the point, when all this food will just make its way back up after a few minutes," I said looking at the delicious spread in front of me but thoughts of puking my guts out held me back from digging in.
"The point is that you and our baby need the nutrients. No matter how much you throw up you'll still gain some."
"But it feels horrible," I whined.
"We should go to the hospital today, I should be able to get an appointment. Just have your breakfast and get ready." She whipped her smartphone out and got busy.
"What's the rush?" I just found out I was pregnant yesterday. I dug into my food and let out a moan at how good it was, "this is so good, you are the breakfast food queen."
"You should get yourself checked out asap, they'll probably give you something for nausea."
"That's true. OMG, do you think all the drinking I've been doing these past few days would affect the baby?"
"I don't know but you could ask the doctor I just booked you in for 11 a.m."
"That's in like two hours," I said. I pushed the food aside and rose to my feet.
"You have enough time to finish your food first," she called out after me as I rushed off to the bathroom. I was way too anxious to eat at this point.
When I stripped my clothes off I stood in the mirror and marvelled at the fact my still relatively flat tummy was now housing a baby and then I rushed through showering and dressing. I made Sapphire do the same and we would have been early for my appointment if I didn't need to throw up twice. The time it took for me to puke and then clean up delayed us but we still arrived at the hospital on time.
"Nervous?" The nurse asked as she prepared me for my scan. She took my blood, checked my vitals and forced me to chug down a large amount of water. Now, I was lying on the bed with my shirt pushed up and my pants pushed down waiting for the ultrasound technician.
"Yh, very nervous," I said.
"It's normal, it's your first time right?" She asked and I just nodded. "Just relax and enjoy the process." The technician walks in dressed in a pristine white lab coat and she steps back. He's an odd little man with his glasses pushed back and he doesn't say a word to any of us, not even a hello. I watched the nurse roll her eyes at his behaviour as he started to rub a gel on my belly.
I shivered at the contacts, "that's colder than I expected," I said but he just continues to power the ultrasound machine on. He waves the wand to different sides of the machine with one hand, looks at the screen and takes notes on his tab with his other hand for a few minutes. I tried to gauge his face but he was blank so I just stared at his short fingers and well-kept fingernails and then I stared at the screen when my little bean appeared. The sound of a steady rhythm fills the room, "is that the heartbeat?" Sapphire asked.
"Yeah, it is," the nurse answered and Sapphire and I made eye contact. Our eyes began to leak right after.
"Is everything okay?" I asked the nurse as I wiped down my belly with the tissues she gave me. Hearing my baby's heartbeat reassured me a bit but I was still worried.
"Don't worry, the doctor will see you in a moment," she reassured me. A few seconds later the doctor came into the room, from the way he walked in you could tell he had a bubbly personality.
"Hello everyone, you must be the new mum," he said. He came over and have my hand a firm shake before ushering me to sit in front of a large desk.
"Let's see what we have here," he said after making his way to the other side of the desk and sitting opposite me. He powered up his computer and browsed through what must have been my results before he said, "Everything looks good, your blood work came back fine. From the looks of the scan, you are eight weeks pregnant, just the right time for a scan. Your next scan should be in about four weeks."
"And the baby, I didn't know I was pregnant so I did a little drinking?"
"The baby is doing great, has a strong heartbeat and is just the right size."
"Thank you, doctor," I said in relief.
"I'll prescribe a few vitamins for you to pick up at the Pharmacy," he said typing away at his computer. "Any nausea?" He asked.
"Lots of nausea, she can barely keep her food down," Sapphire answered before I could.
"We'll get you something for that then. What's your appetite like?"
"Normal," I answered. He typed some more than printed out the prescription for us. We bid him a cheery goodbye, I was feeling relaxed and reassured at that point.
"Ruby, Sapphire, "I heard someone call as we exited the building and immediately spotted Aiden carrying a bouquet and some congratulatory balloons.
" Hi Aiden, you're here to see a friend?" I asked.
"Yeah, something like that, a colleague just had a baby."
"What are you doing here?" Oh crap, what the hell am I going to tell Aiden, what am I doing in front of the maternity section of the hospital?
