Chapter 47: Chapter 47
TOBY.
Everything seems to be back to normal again or almost normal, no attempts have been made on my life so far. Ruby is still avoiding me. I asked her why the other morning, and she looked cornered for a few seconds before dashing out of the room. It was a stupid question to ask though, why would she not avoid it? Not only am I her ex-bully but her unwanted husband who she happened to lose her virginity to, by mistake, I suppose.
She was now so successful at avoiding me that it almost felt ike I lived alone, her avoidance techniques remind me of high school. She avoided my group of friends and I so much but we always found her and brought trouble her way.
'I watched Ruby from where I sat surrounded by my throng of friends at the cool kid's table. She paid for her lunch and waited impatiently for the lunch lady to serve her. She collected her lunch and muttered a thank you to the lunch lady, rushing off to where she usually had her lunch, the bleachers.
All arrangements had been made for our little prank, we had bribed a gardener to switch on the sprinklers at just the right time. Our little group of pranksters followed her discreetly as she made her way outside, she settled on the bench and began to eat and in, three… two…one the sprinklers went off soaking her and the food she was eating. We crawled out of our hiding spots laughing and clutching our bellies, making derogatory statements.
" She looks like a wet hamster," I said and then another boy said, "fat and over."
"Why does she eat outside?" One kid asked.
"Didn't you know? Fat girls don't eat in front of an audience," I answered.
"True, it's so no one knows how much they eat," and we all burst out laughing at that point.
Ruby, who had had her head in her lap all this while, stood up and threw her lunch in the trash, running away with tears in her eyes while we clapped ourselves on the back for a successful prank, cheering and jeering ourselves on.'
Now I wondered why I found such sadistic pleasure in torturing the poor girl, I thought as I took an evening drive, I came back from work earlier to what seemed like an empty house but maybe Ruby was just hiding out in her room again so I decided to take a short drive to relax my mind the think through somethings. I was cruising at a higher speed than I thought I was when something or someone dashed in front of my car. I hit the break instantly, my heart beating accelerating and praying that the car comes to a stop in time. The tires skid against the road and come to an abrupt stop. I hurriedly unclip my seat belt and rush over to find a woman dressed in exercise clothes crouched on the floor shivering in fear but looking unharmed. I let out a whoosh of air, the car didn't hit her but it was close.
"Are you okay?" I said, giving her a hand, only to come face to face with Ruby. I began to panic checking her for any injuries and patting the dust from her clothes.
"Are you hurt? Does anywhere hurt? What were you doing in the middle of the road?" I asked in quick succession. There was a puzzled look on her face at my concern. Then she spotted something behind me and her confused look seemed to clear, I looked back and saw a small crowd forming.
"So that's why," she muttered to herself as I helped her to the car but it was loud enough for me to hear because I had my hand on her waist as I guided her to the passenger's side of the car. I open the door and try to help her in but she shakes my hand off, "I'm perfectly fine," she said.
"Okay," I answered, raising my hands in surrender. I jogged over to the driver's seat, hopped in and we began to head back home. We drove in silence for a few minutes, I took a peep at her a few times and she looked like she was thinking over something.
"I know you hate me but trying to kill me is a new low." She said.
"Huh?" Was all I can muster at her accusations.
"Stop playing dumb like you didn't just try to run me over with your car."
"You think I tried to run you over with my car?" I was confused.
"I know you tried to run me over and the most annoying part is how you acted all concerned when you saw we had an audience."
I was dumbfounded at her accusation and then it turned to anger. Why would she think so low of me that I would try to kill her? "I'd advise you to drop this new running habit or be more careful next time because if I see you in the middle of the road in future it won't end well," I said maliciously.
"Are you threatening me?" She asked.
"Whatever you take it as," I answered, and she scoffed. I drove us home without another word said between us. Immediately after we arrived I parked the car and came down banging the door behind me. She followed after me, the elevator ride up was a tense affair and we all breathed a sigh of relief when it was over, entering our respective rooms and banging the door behind us like it was a competition.
"Hello, what is it," I gritted out after answering Yasmin's call.
"What's got your panties in a twist? I was just calling to see if I could come over, maybe we could do something about that pent-up tension I hear in your voice."
"Since when did you call before coming over?"
"Since I've been to your place and they wouldn't let me up." She whined, sounding bitter about it. To be honest I had been avoiding Yasmin for a while, since my night with Ruby but it was a stupid decision. Ruby had Aiden, I had Yasmin and I would do well not to forget.
"I'll be expecting you," I said to her, cutting the call and letting the front desk people know that I had a guest on the way. A few minutes later Yasmin walked in dressed in a scrap of material passed off as a dress.
"I can see you missed me." She said, eyeing me up and down. "Well, I missed you too." She said before she pecked me on the lips and we fell back in bed together, the same bed I made love to Ruby in. Where the heck did that thought come from, Ruby and I had sex. I didn't make love to her, right?
