Chapter 40: Chapter 40
KIAN
Leaving my girl early this morning wasn't easy for me. I hate it. Less than 24 hours ago Costello was still holding her and now I have to leave her alone again. But as long as Domenico Costello is still alive, there is no way I can remain calm. I gotta put an end to this. Then, of course, there's his daughter – my damn half-sister.
"You came," Gabe says as I step into the cool, bare entrance that leads to various cells in the Dark Palace .
"I want to put an end to this," I growl, staring into his eyes for emphasis.
"I know Kian... Me too" He sighs and I see the big But already. "Julien." Naturally! "He doesn't give up getting information about his business."
"He's in the way," I reply coolly. Julien Torros was very helpful in the beginning, but now he's really annoying. I know Gabriel owes him a debt, and that includes questioning Costello. But I mean, every idiot knows that Costello would rather die than ever reveal anything about his secret dealings. After all, his death is not the end of his dirty drug business. Gabriel rubs his face. I don't even know what he's so superior about. He wants to kill Costello as much as I want to. After all, Costello killed his parents.
I scrutinize him before giving a deep, annoyed sigh. "We'll give him a little more time. Take me to her instead. I have a lot to say to her."
"Okay. But be careful, there's a little scratching brush in there."
"Don't worry. I'll get along with her."
"You say that now," Gabe mumbles before I follow one of Gabe's men, who leads me to her.
The metal door opens with a loud creaking sound. Like every room, this one is only furnished with a chair in the middle and a table on the side. Heaven sit on the chair, her hands tied behind her back. She wears a baggy shirt draped over one shoulder and black leather pants that have some dirt marks on them, along with high heeled boots that are also attached to the chair for safety. I heard she kicked those heels in the wimps of one of Gabe's henchmen before.
"Hello, brother," she spits out as her gaze falls on me. She raises her chin.
"I'm not your brother," I say soberly. Her eyes narrow to slits.
"What about my father? Did you kill him?... I swear to you, if you did that, I'll kill you all, you damn motherfuckers!" she hisses furiously and shakes the bonds.
"Did you know about me?" I ask soberly, crossing my arms in front of my chest, consciously ignoring her previous statement. I eye her intently, just to see if we bear any resemblance. We don't have the same mother, but unfortunately we have the same fucking father. She's quite pretty, if I judge it that way. Her dark brown hair reaches her shoulders. Her facial features are pronounced and she has full lips and a pointed nose. Her eyes are just as gray as mine with a touch of blue in them depending on the light.
"Why are you staring at me, hijo de puta!" I've never felt the urge to hit a woman, and I don't feel it now. She can insult me as much as she wants. I will not hit a woman. Never. "I know you're the son of a whore. Yes, I knew about you. For a long time." I clench my jaw. She has no idea who her father really is. What he did. What he did to her mother.
"Costello paid my mother to bear a child for him - me! I should be his successor if he hadn't met your mom and you hadn't been born," I explain, as I'm not sure if Domenico will too told this truth.
"Nothing I don't know yet, Kian." She leans back and looks me up and down, condescendingly. "What do you want from me? Kill me?"
"Maybe? Would your father tell me about his business if I plan to do it?" I provoke her. I crouch down, close in front of her. She looks down at me with no emotion in her eyes. "What is more important to him, his business or his own daughter?"
"He loves me." There's a good chance Costello loves his daughter more than his business, but something makes me doubt that.
"Really? He doesn't love me after all and I'm his son. But I was also just a means to an end, which he ended up dropping like dirt. But what about you? You weren't planned at all, were you? Your mother died shortly after your birth..."
"Callate la boca!" she hisses angrily. "Don't you dare drag my mother into this!"
"Why? What did your father tell you she died of?" Your eyes sparkle. "Your father wasn't always honest with you, Heaven."
"And how do you know that, Pendejo?"
"I have information, evidence and sources... Your mother was a prosecutor and died shortly after you were born. The autopsy on your mother's death is missing because her body was never found... I wonder if you know that your mother betrayed your father at the time and that she died inexplicably after you were born."
"What are you trying to tell me?" her voice breaks. She knows what I'm getting at. The question is whether she believes me. But there are other ways to convince them I'm telling the truth.
"That your oh so dear father killed your mother for betraying him." she stares at me I can't see any emotion on her face. She is silent, something I don't like. "You probably don't believe me. But after all, you know your father better than I do. You know what he's capable of... And he admitted it himself after I found out about you. He told me himself that your mother was lucky the DEA didn't catch him or he would have killed you in the womb too. I wonder how you can still be with him. Unless you don't know that?"
"And if my father did it? If he really did kill my mother, what good does you do?!" Your question surprises me.
"I just want to show you what a freak he is. He gave my mother money for a child he didn't want in the end. He's following ancient traditions and dragged my girlfriend into it just so I'd kill Gabriel . Understand, he killed your mother! ... I will kill him, Heaven. He may be my father, but he is not my father and never will be." I look her stubbornly in the eyes. I want her to know I'm not bluffing. "You're coming with us now, so we can give him his ultimatum!" I start to open her bonds. "If you try anything, I won't hesitate to shoot you. Don't think you get bonus points for being my half-sister." she is silent I do not know, Should I be happy about it or should I question it. She is unpredictable. After all, she grew up with this man. Who knows what's going on in her head.
Gabriel, Julien and a few henchmen are standing in Domenico's cell. Julien falls silent as I enter the room with Heaven. Apparently he's still in the process of questioning him. Judging by the look on his face, he's starting to realize how hopeless this shit really is. "We're going to propose you a deal..." I start, looking Costello in the eye. He stares at me, then at his daughter.
"I imagined our family reunion differently," he dares to say.
"We are not family." Heaven looks at her father silently and expressionlessly. I can't tell what she's thinking and if she even believes what I said to her. "If you don't reveal anything about your business, we will kill her. In front of your eyes."
"I expected you to ask for this..." he says calmly. What's wrong with him? His daughter's life is at stake and he doesn't even panic. "You're not going to shoot her, Kian..."
"Fine, I'll do it then," says Gabriel, pointing his gun at Heaven. "You killed my parents. It would only be fair if I take your daughter from you..." Gabriel growls.
"I won't disclose anything about my business dealings, Pendejo! You and your screwed up DEA friend can kiss my ass!" I look to Heaven. She's way too quiet about her father's decision. Something's fishy here, I can tell. Why isn't she freaking out? And why is he really putting his daughter's life at risk. I'm beginning to think this is just an act by the two of them to buy time. But for what? I step next to Gabriel to let him know how bad I feel.
"Something's wrong here, Gabe," I whisper to him. He looks at me briefly, then back at Costello. Just as he is about to answer, laughter erupts from Costello. Crap! I knew it. "What the hell have you done?" I yell, grabbing the collar of his shirt.
"What did you expect, Kian? Do you really think you can tie me to a chair, put a gun to my daughter's head and that's it?...Never underestimate me...You missed something didn't you? " I look at his daughter, who looks pleased, and then at Gabe, who is clenching his jaw so hard I can almost hear it cracking. "One of my men, when we were getting this Matthew, planted a bomb that can destroy everything down here in a matter of seconds if you dare kill my daughter or me. If my heart or my daughter's stops beating , this is all going to blow up. And you can't get out of here fast enough to survive. You're all going down. You don't stand a chance. You thought that would be the end – my end, no! That's yours." Fuck, huh?!
"I knew it! It was a damn mistake to bring him here," says Julien. He pulls out his cell phone and mumbles something like find a bomb and bomb disposal device into the phone.
"I knew that you would bring me here. Revenge is probably greater with you than reason," he says to Gabriel. "I think we have a real deal now?" he laughs. My muscles are so tense that they have started to hurt.
"Free him and evacuate the fucking building!" I run my hands through my hair while Gabe's men do as he is told.
"Never underestimate me again, Kian!" Costello growls at me as I pass. We follow them outside because it's definitely not safe in the building anymore.
