Chapter 45: Chapter 45
"ARE you free on the twenty-four, Bianca?" Kelly asked me that morning. "That's already next Saturday."
"Uh, what's with it?"
Kelly put back a book on the shelf and turned to me. "Well, it's Rory's birthday and we wanted to surprise her for dinner. Martin asked for our help."
"Oh…" I whispered when I realized what date Rory's birthday was. It was the same date as the anniversary party of the Henry Corporation.
"I'm sorry, Kelly. I don't think I could go that day…" I bit my lower lip. "I'd be attending a party with Gideon that day."
"It's okay, Bianca." Kelly smiled at me. "We understand. Of course, Rory, too. Don't worry about it."
"I'll just hand you my gift to her."
"Sure. She likes anything vintage, for your reference." She pursed her lips. "By the way, Martin asked me for your number the other day."
"Oh." I blinked.
"Yup. He said he's going to text you about Rory's birthday." She smirked at me. "But I didn't give him. I said he should ask you himself."
"There's no problem with me if you give him my number. It's just Martin."
"What do you think about Martin, Bianca?" She looked at me with curious eyes.
I shrugged. "Well, he's good-looking. Nice. And fun to talk to."
Kelly intriguingly raised her brows. "Do you think he's a potential boyfriend?"
My brows furrowed. "Potential boyfriend for who?"
"Well, for you, who else?"
My lips parted. "Have you forgotten that I'm married, Kelly?"
"But you said you're divorcing your husband soon, right?"
"I… well, yes. But I have no interest in entering another relationship after that! Besides, I'll go back to New York when that time comes."
"Kelly, I need your help here," Jeff shouted from the counter.
"Yeah, coming!" Kelly slightly rolled her eyes before turning to me. "I'll just go to Jeff. He's really annoying."
I pursed my lips and prevented myself from smiling.
Jeff and Kelly were already back to normal.
They're already bickering at each other just like usual. But it still made me wonder what happened to the two of them that particular night.
The next day, I didn't go to work to accompany Gideon to the hospital. Hanna got sick and called me that she couldn't go with Gideon. While Amelia was busy preparing for the party that would happen the next day.
"Are you sure this is fine with you?" Gideon asked me in the car.
I looked at him. "Of course. You're my husband, Gideon."
"I know how much you enjoy working." He gave me a small smile. "I've seen how happy you are with your job at the bookstore."
I blinked. "It's fine, Gideon. It's just one day, anyway."
"Now, try to walk without any support." Gideon's ortho surgeon said after he watched Gideon walk around the room with the help of crutches.
I turned to the man in the white coat. "Do you think it's too early for that, Doc? I mean… he might fall down."
Dr. Enriquez smiled at me. "Your husband can do it, Mrs. Henry. His muscle improvement was great. What do you think, Gideon?"
"I'll do it."
I cleared my throat. "Are you sure, Gideon?" He might fall down or something!
"Yeah. I think I can do it." Gideon smiled, his voice sounded confident. "Go there, Bianca." He pointed at the other side of the room. "I'll try to walk towards you."
I swallowed. "Okay." I followed what he said.
The nurse in the room with us took the crutches from Gideon.
My lips were parted as I watched Gideon slowly take small steps without the help of crutches. I suddenly could feel the loud beating of my heart inside my chest.
I was feeling nervous for him!
"Gideon!" My eyes widened when I saw he almost stumbled on his feet.
I wanted to move my own feet and walked to him but then Gideon looked at me and smiled.
"Stay there. I'll come to you." Gideon mouthed before he continued to take small steps.
My heart continued to beat louder in my chest as I watched him slowly walk towards me. I was nervous for him, but at the same time, I couldn't help but feel proud.
I witnessed him for months in the ICU. Almost lifeless. But here he is now.
"Very good, Mr. Henry," Dr. Enriquez said, impressed. "I guessed it's now time to say goodbye to your crutches. You won't be using them anymore."
The doctor replaced the crutches Gideon had been using with a walking stick.
"You made it," I said to Gideon after we left Dr. Enriquez's room.
I couldn't hide the proud smile on my face.
"Yeah." He gave me a gentle smile. "I told you I'll come to you, didn't I?"
I blinked when I realized I was starting to feel something in my chest. The way he looked at me… The way he said those words…
"Seems like my recovery would be faster than what we are expecting," Gideon said, looking at my face. "But nothing will change in our agreement, right? I still have a month to make you fall for me."
I slightly raised my brow. "Well, you still haven't recovered your memory, anyway."
"Do you think it'll come back?" Gideon asked. We were now waiting for the result of his CT scan. He did another series of tests to see the condition of his brain. "My memory?"
After we were done with his appointment with Dr. Enriquez, we went to his neurologist, Dr. Smith.
"The doctor said it will, right?"
"Do you want me to recover my memory?"
My brows furrowed. "O-of course, who wouldn't want that?"
"I do," his answer made me silent. "You've said that the old Gideon was cruel and heartless. You've said that the old me was evil to you…" There was a sad smile on his face. "I no longer want to remember that, Bianca."
I swallowed. "But those memories will come back to you, Gideon."
His blue eyes pierced through my soul. "Even if I remembered everything from the past, I'd stay the same, Bianca. I'd never go back to the old Gideon."
"When was the last time you experienced a headache?" Dr. Smith asked Gideon.
We were inside the doctor's clinic. Gideon and I were sitting next to each other while Dr. Smith was behind his table across from us.
"Last month, Doc."
"And you haven't remembered anything from that headache?"
"Nothing clear, Doc. Just random flashes of scenes. Usually from my childhood."
"Well," Dr. Smith said, showing us the result of Gideon's brain scan earlier. "Your brain is already in normal activity, Mr. Henry. That's why you no longer experience headaches and migraines."
"Well, that's good news, right?" Gideon asked.
The doctor's face turned serious.
"Yeah. But in your case, Mr. Henry, since your memory hasn't come back yet… there's a big possibility that you would no longer recover all your lost memories."
My lips parted in shock. I turned to Gideon who had his eyebrows furrowed.
"Gideon's past memories… he wouldn't recover it anymore?" I asked Dr. Smith.
The doctor gave us a small smile. "There's only a slim chance, Mrs. Henry. But we will still continue to monitor his brain activity and conduct further tests. But for now, I can say that the possibility is really slim. I'm sorry, Mr. and Mrs. Henry."
"Do you want to go somewhere?" Gideon asked after we settled down in the backseat of his Aston Martin.
We had almost spent half a day here in the hospital. The sun was already setting when we got out of the hospital.
"Let's just go home," I said, my eyes on the window looking at the orange sky. The sunset during summer was beautiful here in LA.
"I'll just cook our dinner."
"Really?"
"Yeah. What do you want?"
"Anything. As long as it's prepared by you."
I turned to him. My brows furrowed a little when I saw he was smiling wide. "What?"
He licked his lower lip. "I'm just happy because my wife decided to cook for me."
I felt something weird inside my chest. I cleared my throat. "By the way, I'm sorry about what Dr. Smith said earlier."
I remembered everything his neurologist said to us. Gideon's chance of recovering his old memories was slim.
I looked at his face. Gideon's face was calm. He didn't look sad or anything. "Nah. It's fine, Bianca."
"I don't need my past memories. I'm already fine and content with who I am right now."
His lips curled up in a smile. "If this happened to me, maybe this was for the better. The higher being didn't want me to remember the past because he wanted me to move forward. And I told you this was what I wanted, right? A clean slate of my life."
His eyes lingered on me. "A second chance with you."
