Chapter 56: Chapter 56
Despite the flurry of tasks, her thoughts constantly wandered back to the inevitable encounter that she both anticipated and dreaded.
As the clock ticked closer to the end of the workday, Ava tidied up her desk with meticulous precision, her movements deliberate as she organized her belongings, a veil of tension taut across her features.
With her bag in hand, she finally decided to leave, steeling herself for the possibility of crossing paths with Bryan. The moment she turned towards the office exit, however, fate had other plans.
There, standing before her, was Bryan, his presence unexpected yet somehow inevitable and her bag dropped instantly. He stood there, looking so mad that Ava thought he was going to shake the life out of her. Their eyes met, locking in an intense gaze, and a myriad of emotions flickered in the air between them.
Ava's eyes revealed a tumultuous mix of apprehension, uncertainty, and a hint of longing. She could feel the weight of unspoken words hanging in the silence, the uncharted territory of their relationship stretching between them like an invisible thread.
Bryan's gaze was equally intense, his eyes reflecting a blend of yearning, confusion, and a silent plea for understanding. The unspoken tension crackled in the air, an unsaid dialogue echoing between their shared gaze.
For a moment that stretched into eternity, they stood frozen, ensnared in a silent exchange of emotions, each grappling with their inner turmoil, their unspoken thoughts echoing in the space between them, a palpable tension threading the air.
He knew, Ava thought in shock as she stared at him. He knew she had been avoiding him. Bryan walked towards her slowly like a predator and Ava found herself backing off until her butt hit her desk. Thank goodness for the fact that the office was empty, she thought. Her colleagues had left the office long before she finished her tasks.
" Hi " She greeted but her voice came out weak.
He scoffed " Hi?! " He asked, pinning on her a deadly glare.
Ava gulped and gripped the sides of her skirt anxiously. " I... I... " She struggled to let out the right words.
Bryan's words sliced through the charged atmosphere, his tone stiff and clipped, devoid of its usual warmth. " I'll give you a ride home, " he stated abruptly, the words hanging in the air like an unspoken demand. Without waiting for a response, he turned on his heel, striding purposefully towards the exit, leaving no room for negotiation or discussion.
Ava's heart sank at the abruptness of his words, sensing the simmering anger beneath his composed exterior. She hesitated for a moment, torn between the desire to clarify and the realization that following him might only exacerbate the tension between them.
Resigned to the situation, Ava grabbed her bag, her steps quickening as she hurried to catch up with his fast pace. The distance between them seemed both physical and emotional, a palpable chasm that widened with each passing moment.
The air between them crackled with unspoken words, the weight of unsaid apologies and unresolved emotions hanging heavy in the silence. Ava could sense the storm brewing within Bryan, his anger a tangible presence as they moved side by side, the tension between them nearly suffocating.
As they reached the parking lot, Bryan walked briskly towards his car, his jaw set with an air of rigid determination. Ava quickened her pace to match his, the need for resolution and understanding clawing at her insides.
Before settling in, he opened the car door for her as usual. He also did her seatbelt without a word and even ignored her when she thanked him.
Ava stole a glance at Bryan, noting the tightness in his posture and the furrowed lines etched upon his brow. His grip on the steering wheel was rigid, his knuckles turning white under the strain.
The silence inside the car was heavy, filled with unspoken words that hung in the air like a thick fog. Ava could feel Bryan's anger radiating from him, a palpable force that made the atmosphere tense and stifling.
Ava knew the reason behind his anger, the unresolved issues that lingered between them like uncharted territories. She wished to bridge the gap, to explain, to make things right, but the barrier of unspoken emotions held her back, constricting her words into a suffocating silence.
As they drove, the air inside the car remained thick with tension, each passing moment an unspoken testimony to the growing chasm between them. The silence was so thick that it could be cut with a knife. Ava's heart ached with the weight of their unvoiced turmoil, desperately wishing for a way to mend the fractures that had marred their once tranquil connection.
Ava's apartment building loomed in the distance, the journey feeling longer than usual with the weight of their unspoken words hanging heavy in the air. As Bryan's car pulled up in front of her place, Ava's heart pounded, a mixture of apprehension and a desperate longing for understanding knotting her insides.
With a hesitating breath, Ava opened the car door, stepping out into the quiet night. She fidgeted with her bag, her eyes darting nervously as she waited for Bryan to join her.
The minutes stretched on, each one amplifying the silent tension between them. When Bryan finally emerged from the car and approached her side, Ava's heart fluttered with a mix of relief and trepidation.
" Huh... Good night, I guess, and thanks for the ride, " Ava said softly, her voice tinged with a hint of vulnerability, an attempt to break the suffocating silence that surrounded them.
However, Bryan remained wordless, his stoic expression betraying none of the emotions that churned within. Ava's shoulders slumped with a tacit understanding of his silence, the weight of their unresolved situation hanging heavily between them.
As she turned to leave, accepting his silence as a testament to his unspoken emotions, a quiet voice pierced the air. " Why? " Bryan's voice broke the silence, barely audible, laced with an undercurrent of sorrow and confusion.
