Extreme Almightiest Young Master Chapter 49
Chapter 049: The Charity Banquet
"Sister Leng, hello! The busy bee, what are you up to?" Ding Wan’er made the call and greeted Leng Mei affectionately.
"Girl Ding, haven’t heard from you for a while, what’s up?" Leng Mei was already very accustomed to Ding Wan’er only contacting her when she needed something. It wasn’t that the sisters didn’t get along, but that they were simply too busy with endless work commitments.
"Sister Leng, can you accompany me to a charity cocktail party tonight?" Ding Wan’er asked, coquettishly pleading on the phone with Leng Mei.
"I can’t tonight. Grandfather has already made plans with me, so I must go home this evening. I can’t help you today." Leng Mei spoke the truth, today was really inconvenient; after being so busy that she hadn’t seen her grandfather in months, she finally had the chance to visit home, but then Ding Wan’er needed her help—It’s not that I don’t want to assist you, sis, it’s really just bad timing.
"What should I do then? You expect me to go by myself?" Hearing that Leng Mei was unavailable, Ding Wan’er suddenly felt troubled.
"If you trust my judgment, I can recommend someone for you," Leng Mei suggested suddenly.
"Who are you talking about?" Ding Wan’er’s heart skipped a beat upon hearing Leng Mei’s words. Could it be Lin Feng that Sister Leng was referring to?
"Lin Feng, the one who substituted for my French class—Lin Feng," said Leng Mei directly from the other end of the line.
"Lin Feng, really him?" Ding Wan’er was startled upon hearing the name Lin Feng; it was like she had summoned him by mere thought, and Sister Leng actually meant him.
"What do you mean ’really him’? You know him?" Leng Mei was also surprised by Ding Wan’er’s reaction.
"Oh, it’s nothing. I was just wondering why Sister Leng would recommend him?"
"There isn’t a particular reason. Just take him with you; otherwise, go on your own," Leng Mei didn’t feel the need to explain further. Lin Feng gave off an incredibly safe vibe, so taking care of Girl Ding wouldn’t be a problem at all.
"Oh, got it. You go ahead with your business, sister." Ding Wan’er replied nonchalantly and then hung up the phone.
The suggestion from Sister Leng kept swirling in Ding Wan’er’s mind... Lin Feng...
Thinking about it, Lin Feng wasn’t a bad idea. Ever since her car accident, he had been punctually picking her up and dropping her off at work. He barely spoke unnecessarily, and aside from giving off a cool vibe, all that remained were feelings of comfort and trust. For some reason, whenever she was with Lin Feng, especially when she was in his car, she felt an incomprehensibly serene comfort.
It wasn’t like being with other wealthy young men or sitting in someone else’s car, which felt strangely contrived.
It was an indescribable sense of trust in Lin Feng that just then sparked a thought in Ding Wan’er’s mind: take him along, he was after all her prospective fiancé. Going to the cocktail party with him wouldn’t raise any eyebrows.
Prospective fiancé?! What am I thinking?!
Ding Wan’er shook her head hastily, wondering to herself what on earth she was thinking, surely not that she actually...
Then again, why did Sister Leng say that? Was Sister Leng very familiar with him, or did she have another way of knowing?
After much confused thought, Ding Wan’er decided to just concentrate on the evening ahead. She picked up her phone and dialed Lin Feng’s number.
"Lin Feng? Come pick me up a bit earlier tonight. You’ll accompany me to a cocktail party; is that all right?" Ding Wan’er asked for Lin Feng’s agreement.
"Okay," Lin Feng’s answer was incredibly simple.
Okay... Ding Wan’er was speechless. It was her first time inviting someone to accompany her to a party and receiving such a response. Though he had agreed, just a single ’okay’ felt too... too...
"Alright, then. See you tonight." Ding Wan’er, at a loss for words, paused, then replied briefly.
"See you tonight."
...
When Lin Feng came to pick up Ding Wan’er that evening, he was surprised to find her descending the stairs of the university’s office building in a stunning red dress, gracefully getting into Lin Feng’s car.
"Lin Feng, didn’t you change into a different outfit?" Ding Wan’er, observing Lin Feng in casual attire while he drove, wondered if he was unaware that attending such a party required formal dress.
"It’s just a cocktail party, and I’m merely accompanying you for a bit," Lin Feng replied casually. From his perspective, attending the party was not his affair; at most, he was there to act as Ding Wan’er’s bodyguard and didn’t need to dress up formally.
Hearing Lin Feng’s response, Ding Wan’er felt frustrated, but after giving it some thought, she decided he might have a point and therefore refrained from commenting further. She sat quietly in the back of the car, motionless, watching Lin Feng’s silhouette as he drove. The more she looked, the more mysterious he seemed, the more curious she became...
Finally, they arrived at the venue of the banquet. As soon as Ding Wan’er and Lin Feng got out of the car, they saw Li Wenkai approaching from afar.
Regarding the persistent and bothersome Li Wenkai who clung like gum, Ding Wan’er was truly speechless and helpless. She couldn’t react quite as boldly as Sister Leng Mei by directly standing up against someone she disliked because, after all, she was Ding Wan’er, the president of Yingbo University, a public figure. If she were involved in any scandal, it could greatly harm the university’s reputation, and this was a concern she had to consider.
Even though Ding Wan’er enjoyed her job as the university president, sometimes she felt frustrated that she couldn’t deal with such nuisances as Sister Leng Mei did...
Suddenly, Ding Wan’er sharply realized something—she wasn’t alone by her side was none other than her fiancé...
Humph, even if he isn’t really her fiancé, he could still lend a hand now.
With that thought, Ding Wan’er glanced at Lin Feng beside her and naturally slid her hand through his arm. To outsiders, it seemed as if Ding Wan’er was indeed Lin Feng’s companion.
Hmm?
Lin Feng was initially stunned. What was this beautiful school principal doing, trying to pursue him? Given her rigid body language, clearly not. But as soon as he felt Ding Wan’er’s move and saw Li Wenkai approaching, he understood what was going on. She was definitely using him as a shield, but considering Ding Wan’er was a decent person, he didn’t mind helping her out a bit, so he let her continue to hold onto his arm.
"Wan’er, I’ve been waiting for so long, why did you just arrive?" Li Wenkai, upon seeing Ding Wan’er arm in arm with Lin Feng, felt a surge of anger, his heart brimming with jealousy. How long have I known Ding Wan’er, and I haven’t even touched her hand yet—on what grounds does this down-and-out young master deserve such treatment?
After Lin Feng’s car accident that day, Li Wenkai had someone thoroughly investigate Lin Feng, and he was somewhat surprised when he found out that Lin Feng was the missing scion who had once shocked the whole of Tianhai City. However, after reviewing all the information, he concluded that Lin Feng had no significant background and could be stepped on at will. He then handed the information over to Brother Bao, instructing him to deal with Lin Feng.
But to his surprise, a few days later, Brother Bao told him that the hitman had failed and even got himself killed, which left Li Wenkai fuming with jaw aching for days.
And now, seeing Lin Feng again, how could he not be angry?
"We ran into a traffic jam on the way, so we were delayed a little," Ding Wan’er replied indifferently before deliberately leaning closer to Lin Feng, hinting to Li Wenkai that she already had a male companion and wished for him not to pester her anymore.
"Then let’s go in," Li Wenkai said with gentlemanly decorum, letting Lin Feng and Ding Wan’er enter the main banquet hall. From the side, Li Wenkai, sneering as he watched Lin Feng’s back, thought, today, all of my close friends are here—these guys are masters of ’playing’ people. I’ll definitely find an opportunity to embarrass Lin Feng properly.
Though violence wasn’t permissible here, making Lin Feng lose face was still a pleasurable prospect.
"Wan’er is here?!"
"Wan’er has arrived."
...
As soon as she entered the hall, every person who saw Ding Wan’er greeted her enthusiastically; it was clear that Ding Wan’er was very well-liked here.
Who’s the man by Wan’er’s side?
I’ve never heard about Wan’er having a boyfriend?
Who is that guy?
Why is Wan’er with a man?
...
Almost everyone at the party was baffled upon seeing Ding Wan’er and Lin Feng together, wondering who this man was and what charm he possessed to be so close to Ding Wan’er—this was truly a remarkable curiosity.
To know that nobody had ever seen Ding Wan’er like this before.
Everyone knew very well what kind of person Ding Wan’er was—she had never been involved in any scandal, and even at charity events like this one, she was usually accompanied by that ice-cold beauty, never having a man as her escort or even letting a man touch her hand.
Yet such was Ding Wan’er, who today, against all precedents, brought a man with her to the party. What was even more shocking was that Ding Wan’er was affectionately hooked onto his arm. Amazing, utterly amazing—what was happening today?
"Wan’er, you didn’t even tell Sister Wang that you had a boyfriend now—you must introduce him!" Sister Wang, who had called earlier in the afternoon, couldn’t resist stepping up to Ding Wan’er and teasing her.
"Sister Wang, he’s just a regular friend who accompanied me to the party today," Ding Wan’er replied, a hint of blush on her face as she quickly let go of Lin Feng’s hand.
"Hello, Lin Feng," Lin Feng introduced himself naturally and casually upon being greeted.
"Hello, I’m Wang Li, typically called Sister Wang by your family’s Ding Wan’er," the woman named Wang Li continued to tease Ding Wan’er. However, seeing Lin Feng’s composed and confident demeanor, she felt a strong liking toward him. No wonder he had captured Ding Wan’er’s heart.
"Sister Wang. As I said, he’s just a regular friend," Ding Wan’er quickly countered Sister Wang’s words.
"Alright, you two go and greet everyone else. When you have some free time, bring him over to my teahouse for tea," Sister Wang didn’t want to hold up Ding Wan’er, but she looked at her with an expressive face,
Being so intimate and still calling it a regular friendship, who would buy that? It’s like blatantly saying there’s silver here when there’s none.
Seeing Sister Wang’s expression, Ding Wan’er, as intelligent as she was, understood her intentions, but couldn’t explain now, leaving her utterly speechless.
However, upon thinking it over, wasn’t this precisely the outcome she wanted? With that thought, her mood lightened, and she continued to lead Lin Feng around the banquet hall, engaging in courteous exchanges...
