Chapter 265: Chapter 265
Time quietly slipped by, and when Du You woke up again, he was awakened by the tremors sweeping through the ground.
He looked at his panel, his magic power had practically fully recovered, just a little bit left, no harm done.
But the ground’s tremor had put everyone on edge. "Everyone be quiet, if you don’t want to be found, hide. You, go take a look and report back at all times, don’t get spotted," said the leader to a scout, a diminutive but exceptionally nimble person, who, after saluting, silently poked his head out to survey the situation, reporting what he saw.
Meanwhile, the two remaining Pegasus Knights had somehow established communication with the people in the city, ready to take their orders. However, the command from above was to hold steady and not engage.
They hid behind the Sandpeople and never approached them. At this point, the Sandpeople had left their oasis camp and swarmed towards White Stone City. Yes, swarmed, without any formation or proper division of tasks. If humans were to attack a city in such a manner, it would be suicide.
But the Sandpeople were not humans. When they were nearing White Stone City, they lowered their bodies and disappeared from sight. No, they did not disappear; they tunneled into the thick layer of sand.
At the front of White Stone City, the sand on the ground was plentiful, after all, it was near a desert, and had been constantly modified by the Sandpeople.
"Activate the City Defense Magic Array, the winter battle has begun. Everyone, rest assured, these murderers have had to act hastily this time, they aren’t prepared, they won’t pose a threat to us."
In the rear, logistics soldiers continuously brought arrows and other defensive items to the city wall. They had been busy for two days, and still weren’t done. The parapet was now stocked with a substantial amount of military supplies.
Countless Sandpeople had neared White Stone City, but upon hitting the city’s underground magic barrier, they could not advance any further and popped up from beneath. The sudden emergence of so many people from beneath the city would have terrified any ordinary city soldier, but these city defenders of White Stone City were already accustomed to it.
Their arrows had long since been drawn, targeting that line. As soon as the Sandpeople emerged, the city’s military command gave the order to attack. A rain of arrows fell, taking down swathes of Sandpeople.
Given the Sandpeople’s superior physical attributes, they didn’t have effective measures to counter this kind of attack.
The Sandpeople charged forth fearlessly, without shields or siege weapons, just hurtled straight onto danger. But when they neared the city wall, the sand beneath them suddenly shifted.
Piles of sand surged into the air, forming bridges on the ground surface.
Upon closer inspection, it was discovered that the priests behind were already initiating their magic.
It wasn’t a complex spell to manipulate the sand to form bridges. But to do it from such a distance, and to create so many of the large sand bridges was decidedly not so easy. At the rear, many priests were well-prepared and were getting ready.
The Sandpeople weren’t surprised at all, they simply charged across these sand bridges toward the city walls. A portion of the soldiers diverted their attack, shooting arrows in a hail.
Meanwhile, some of the Sandpeople’s archers started to return fire. However, archery was not a formal job amongst the Sandpeople, so all were amateurs, and their arrows didn’t pack much force or any special power.
Such arrows could only pose a minor inconvenience to the city defenders.
At this moment, the Sand Sculpture Knights in the sky made their approach. The specially prepared heavy crossbow bolts were instantly set in motion.
One by one, thick arrows were shot directly at the sky, instantly knocking down many Sand Sculpture Knights. However, in the heat of the moment, the Sand Sculpture Knights felt no fear, unfazed by their own losses, and madly flew forward.
Because they were flying, their speed was notably fast, so hitting them wasn’t that easy. After three volleys of crossbow bolts, the Sand Sculpture Knights had reached the city. The well-prepared Pegasus Knights rushed to meet them.
When the Pegasus Knights and Sand Sculpture Knights became entangled with each other, the large crossbow bolts fell silent, haphazard attacks may end up causing friendly fire.
Finally, the Sandpeople’s secret weapons made their entrance. From the rear, one by one, these strange round creatures began to emerge. Standing about 13 feet tall, they were spherical in shape with short legs but huge feet. What was peculiar about these creatures was their long arms that, when raised, reached around 20 to 23 feet high, far longer than their own bodies.
About a dozen of these creatures positioned themselves opposite the city, and, rubbing their hands together on the ground, they formed a massive ball of sand. They stretched their hands backward, then with a forceful push, hurled the ball of sand.
The terrifying force of their throw was akin to a massive trebuchet. Moreover, these balls of sand, clearly contained strong magic power, making them much more destructive than the plain rock thrown by a trebuchet.
Apparently in anticipation, giant crossbow bolts shifted their target, aiming for these balls. Arrows after arrows flew out, instantly shattering many of the balls in mid-air. Still, some managed to slip past the crossfire.
The crossbow bolts shot past the balls, landing behind the Sandpeople and killing many. However, the strange creatures, having stayed out of range, were unaffected by the bolts.
On the other hand, the sand balls fell on the city wall of White Stone City. But a layer of grey light flashed over the city wall, completely blocking the balls, not causing any tremors. This was the defensive effect of the magic array in action.
The soldiers cheered before resuming their merciless slaughtering. The frontline soldiers, having grown tired, would then swap places with those behind.
However, the Sandpeople’s seemingly careless method of attacking a city was a handful to deal with. Even though they had the advantage of higher ground on the city walls, they were gradually losing more and more men to the Sandpeople who managed to get atop the wall. Gradually, human soldiers began to get injured and die.
"The siege is becoming more intense, Sandpeople are closing in with full force. Only the logistics and priests are in the back, save the Sand Dune Monsters."
The Sandpeople were always modest in their attacks, lacking reserves, they swarmed forward like a hive of bees. To put it lightly, they were a tide, bluntly, they were messy. The source of this content ɪs 𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹·𝖿𝗂𝗋𝖾·𝗇𝖾𝗍
The Sand Dune Monsters were the strange creatures tossing balls of sand. It seemed like only Sandpeople were able to communicate with these creatures. They couldn’t exactly be considered magical beasts since they possessed a certain level of intelligence, yet because of their scarcity, they couldn’t be classified as an intelligent species either. The Sand Dune Monsters harbored no culture of their own and survived as wild beasts.
