Chapter 95: Chapter 95
“Mother!” Emily said in shock and the woman quickly sprang out of the bed, taking the covers with and at the same time leaving Mr. Brown naked on the bed as he quickly struggled to save his dignity, but Emily was already bolting out of the door just until her mother caught up with her, pulling her by arm with a desperation to her stance.
“Emily wait! Let me explain” she pleaded and Emily turned around, coming face to face with the woman she was even yet to acknowledge as her mother even.
“Explain what? You have nothing to explain, I’ll just be on my way” she said turning to leave but Alyssa held her back still and when Emily looked over her head, Mr. Brown was now fully dressed and was approaching them, his expression particularly blank.
“Just let’s talk about it first” Alyssa held on.
“There’s nothing to talk about, I shouldn’t have come here at all. I came looking for Anita but obviously she’s not home and I should be going”
“Who’s looking for Anita?” Emily suddenly heard her voice and her echoing footsteps as she climbed up the flight of stairs with her hands clamped full with shopping bags and the moment their eyes met, Anita stopped – an obvious shock on her face but only from seeing Emily.
“You!” she said and then her eyes drifted to a half naked Alyssa and her father who stood limply before fixing her eyes back on Emily.
“You know about them?” Emily asked, noticing the lack of surprise on Anita’s face but Anita only shrugged
“Oh yea, they’ve been going at it and no thanks to you”
Emily looked back at her mother “I didn’t come here for you, so there’s really nothing to interrupt…. mother” Emily said before walking away from her but she went straight to Emily and began pulling her by her arm out to the patio. Anita struggled slightly, pulling her arms out of Emily’s hold
“In case you haven’t forgotten, I’m still pregnant and by your husband in case you have forgotten and before you even think of asking, I’m not getting rid of the baby” Anita offered hurriedly but Emily only rolled her eyes, she was about to speak before Anita interrupted yet again.
“And you’ve been busy Emily, married to one brother and kissing the other on the red carpet. Who could’ve thought you to be a play girl, I’m impressed really” Anita added with a mocking hint to her tone.
“So you’ve been keeping up and looking for more ways to destroy my life like you did Amelia” Emily said
Immediately, a dark cloud went over Anita’s face and instinctively, her hand went over her belly where Emily could notice the slightest pouch sprouting and unconsciously, she moved to feel her stomach but it wasn’t suspicious, not even Anita knew she was pregnant at least not yet. Anita’s frown only went deeper as she studied her closely, but she wasn’t blinking like she had something to prove.
“I have no idea what you’re on about” she said defensively and Emily gave a dry laugh
“What are you even doing here? I’m busy so you can see yourself out” Anita said now and attempting to leave but Emily held her back.
“Don’t run off yet, at least tell me why you’re telling everyone about our parents?”
“Our parents?” it was Anita’s turn to laugh dryly, a laugh that held no sparkle but she seemed to lose herself in it “When you say it like that, we sound like actual sisters and the last thing I want to be with you is to be your sister Emily. Don’t ever say such corny shit again”
“Don’t go around talking to reporters about me Anita”
Anita paused now, taking her in with her brows slightly raised “What?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, why would I talk to anyone about you. I don’t care about you at all, and left for me I wouldn’t want anyone to know we’re involved in some twisted kind of way or worse related because let’s be sincerely honest why would I, Anita Brown be sisters with a low life like you?”
“What?” Emily stared dumbfounded, but not totally surprised at Anita’s choice of words.
“The only reason why anybody knows your name at all is because you’re married to Ethan and you don’t deserve it because you’ll never be one of us, you’re still a commoner no matter how many scandals you get into, or how many paparazzi follow you around”
Emily only smiled at Anita’s words “At least, I’m not pregnant by a man who doesn’t want me”
“Oh he will, soon enough” Anita said now and she consciously rubbed her tummy with her eyes still fixed on Emily “When he realized I’m the only woman he’ll ever need and now if you don’t mind you can see yourself out” Anita said in finality and walked away leaving Emily behind who rolled her eyes, she could care less and she was not about to go back and forth with Anita.
Emily walked out of the patio to find her mother waiting just outside, she was going to slid past when her mother gently touched her arm and she stopped, just at the last minute with her feet tapping restlessly.
“Give me a chance, Emily. Give me a chance to be your mother before it’s too late” she pleaded. Emily looked at her, noticing the slight wrinkles around her eyes and smile lines around her mouth, but Emily felt conflicted. She was pregnant and she needed her mother to know, she needed to feel the motherly touch she had missed all her life. She wanted to feel the love without questioning it, without the fear but still a part of her held back, she wasn’t ready. This woman had lied to her after all, she had had lied about everything and the distrust lay plastered on her chest.
“What do you mean?” Emily was curious now, and she fixed her eyes on the woman before her who still held unto her, a certain desperation bleeding off her it picked at Emily.
“I have something to tell you Emily, it’s been going on for a while and I’m not sure how long I’ll last”
Emily stood pensive, her eyes contemplating and indecisive if she should trust her again. Did she really want to know any more information that might send her on a spiral? Was her mother serious or was she looking for ways to keep her close but yet, the curiosity got the best of her and she looked at her mother with her head raised slightly high.
“What is it?” she asked, calmly and her nerves suddenly picking up. Alyssa’s eyes became downcast and she stepped closer that Emily could catch a hint of her perfume and something else that she couldn’t quite place yet.
“I have cancer, and I’m afraid I don’t have much time left”
