Chapter 49: Chapter 49
After yesterday, I couldn't get Adrian out of my mind. I missed him even more. I felt that the time we spent together yesterday wasn't enough to foster my longing, but I couldn't have asked him to meet when I was the one who said that yesterday was the last day we could be together.
"Hey, earth to Mabel! Did you hear anything I just said?"
I snapped out of my reverie and found Ashton touching my forehead. As usual, he must had thought I was sick.
"I'm not sick, Ash." I answered slowly as I took his hand away from my forehead.
"You look pale today. You're not even paying attention to what I'm saying,"
Ashton sighed and sat down next to me. "It's still about Adrian, right?"
I shook my head then glanced at Ashton sharply. "Not everything about him. I'm just tired,"
Ashton looked doubtful at my answer, but he dismissed the thought that was in his mind. He nodded then we didn't speak to each other and just kept silent until I found Sarah and my father came up and walked over to us.
"Mabel, we have an update on Rainy." My father explained. I froze when I heard Rainy's name. It was exactly what Adrian had said when we were on our way home yesterday. I was fully prepared for all eventualities that would occur.
"Really?" Ashton stood up from his spot. "Where is she?" Since what Rainy did to me, Ashton and Sarah's relationship became bad. He hated her and thought it was her who had brainwashed Rainy into taking control of my family's fortune.
"Can you guys give me and Mabel some time? I need to talk to her, alone."
I still sat where I was, not really wanting to have a conversation with Sarah.
"No," Ashton interrupted immediately. "Mabel won't talk to anyone. She just needs to know where Rainy is. Just tell us,"
Sarah ignored Ashton's interruption. She took my hand and said. "Just a moment, Mabel. Please,"
"Just tell us where your daughter is," As usual, Ashton was having a hard time controlling his temper.
"Ash," I gave Ashton a reassuring smile that I would be fine. "I can handle this,"
My father nodded and patted Ashton's shoulder lightly. "Let them talk, we can wait here."
Ashton gave me a look, which I was sure he was afraid Sarah might do something bad to me. He had reason to think that way of Sarah. I just gave him a brief nod then stood up and followed Sarah into the backyard.
Arriving at the backyard, Sarah took a deep breath. When it was just the two of us, I realized her eyes were a bit swollen. She had been crying.
I didn't start the conversation. I just waited for Sarah to just get to the point.
"Rainy is here," Sarah started the conversation with an interesting opening. When I didn't respond, she stared curiously. I didn't show any expression, didn't know how to react to that information. "She wants to meet you. I know you won't want to see her for what she had done. But can I expect you to be willing to meet her? She realizes her mistake and wants to personally apologize to you,"
I pressed my eyes in doubt. On the one hand, I knew Sarah was sincere when she said that without any bad thoughts or intentions towards me. But I knew the bad intentions her daughter had for me. It left me not knowing what to say.
"Is there still an apology door for her from you?" Sarah slowly shed tears. "Rainy is my baby. And I know she's a good girl, but honestly I feel guilty because I rarely had time for her so I didn't know what she was feeling- what sadness or anger she had. I feel very sorry that I couldn't be a good mother for her,"
I started to shed tears with how Sarah loved her daughter. It touched my heart. My mother died when I was little, so I didn't know what it was like to have a mother's love. And now, hearing how Sarah loved Rainy so much, my heart trembled.
"I'll talk to her," I smiled holding back the other tears that would come. Sarah looked at me sadly. "Take me to her,"
"Mabel, I don't know how to thank you. You've been so good to me," Sarah took me in her arms. "Thank you so much,"
Finished talking, we immediately returned to the living room. Ashton immediately stood up when he saw me.
"Promise not to get angry and act rashly?" I asked as Ashton came up to me. He rolled his eyes. He already knew I would make him promise to hold back if he wanted to know what Sarah and I had to talk about. "Hurry up, promise me!"
"All right, all right. I promise,"
"Rainy is here and I will meet her," I said with a smile. Ashton's curious expression changed. He looked at me with a serious look. I quickly rubbed his shoulder. "I will be fine,"
"No, Mabel, no. I won't let her get any closer to you,"
"She can't hurt me," I tried to reassure Ashton even though I didn't know what would happen. Even so, I was sure Adrian couldn't just sit idly by knowing my life was in danger. He must had his own plans.
Convincing Ashton wasn't that easy, but I did it. He relented, but on condition that he should be some distance from where Rainy and I were talking to make sure I was okay. He really wouldn't let me slip out of his sight. I didn't even expect to see Rainy again after that day, without even preparing what I was going to say.
Rainy was still as beautiful as the first time I met her. She wore a short white midi dress with gold bracelets on her wrists. The smile on her face bothered me especially when I knew she intended to kill me. I could tell there was no remorse on her face, contrary to what she said. She kept apologizing for everything, but I couldn't seem to focus on it all. I kept my guard up and I was being so careful.
"Well well, what's going on here? Why are you guys so tense?"
I suddenly looked in the direction of the voice and found Daniel standing in the doorway. My eyes immediately glanced behind him and found Adrian stepping in with a grin.
"What the hell? Who let you in here, Adrian?" Ashton's voice boomed through the room.
Rainy gulped, she seemed to panic that her plan would not go that smoothly.
"This is not your mansion, Ashton. So anyone has the right to come here," concluded Daniel.
"Stop talking nonsense, what are you guys doing here?" Ashton was full guard. He walked up to me then acted like an overprotective boyfriend. "Haven't you hurt Mabel enough? Now you've come again to give her more pain?"
Ashton's question this time shook Adrian, his expression turning cold in no time.
"Why get annoyed by what I said when it's true?"
"Ash," I whispered to Ashton to stop, but he raised his hand to signal me to stay still. If there was a chance he would definitely say it's a business between men.
"I know what I did was a big mistake. I'm not proud of it either," Adrian began. "But beyond that, you should know what a man feels when his woman loses her life just because of a random man's mistake. How can that man not feel revenge?"
"You're a vengeful man, huh?" Ashton still wanted to start a fight. "My father already got the punishment for his mistakes. Is that still not enough for you?"
Both were overcome with rage, but neither of us tried to pacify. My father and Daniel gave me a look that said it all. I understood they had to solve their problems immediately without anyone's interference, especially me. That day, everything had to end.
"If you are not satisfied with the punishment given to my father, face me head on. We can fight in the ring, I will accept it. Why did you have to make the woman I love as my weakness? Did you think the death of your woman should be avenged with tears from my woman? Mabel is innocent, but you have the heart to betray her heart with your fake love. How petty you are,"
"Everything was a fake scenario, but not my love." Adrian said as he stepped forward. Both consumed by the rage and all the hatred that had been bottled up from the first time they met. They just needed a bit of sugar to that horrid bitter.
The fight between Adrian and Ashton was not the first time I had come across. Whenever there was an opportunity to start a fight, they took it. Now nothing was stopping them from getting their complexes and hatred resolved.
I couldn't stay still watching them soon beat their handsome faces to each other. As I was about to take a step forward, someone grabbed me from behind and without me being able to process what was happening, Rainy had already pointed the gun at my head. Everyone was gasped and Sarah screamed in shock at what her daughter was doing. I could only stay silent while following where Rainy took me.
"Rainy, stop!" Adrian followed us while signaling me not to utter a single word that might make Rainy angry and pressed the trigger. I followed his orders and could only surrender. Ashton, my father, and also Sarah followed behind Adrian. There was obvious panic and worry on their faces.
Rainy took me out of the mansion then stopped near the garden fountain. There, Anthonio and his men had gathered and surrounded us all. Their plan really went smoothly.
"What kind of joke is this, Rainy?" Ashton snapped. "You really are seeking your own death,"
Sarah looked sadly at Rainy. She hugged my father and could only cry. I didn't try to untangle Rainy's arm around my neck other than looking straight at Adrian. We stared at each other and believe me the eyes speak a lot more than the mouth. Even if I was going to die, I was glad to have known Adrian Moretti. The man known as the strongest mafia in city. But behind that title, there was a fragile man without the love of his parents and always left alone.
"I just want to get my justice. And that will never happen while Mabel lives,"
"You're out of your mind, Rainy!" Ashton said as he took one step forward past Adrian.
"I swear I will press this trigger if you take one more step, Ashton!" Rainy threatened even more. "Besides, Mabel isn't worth enough to be cared about by all of you! I hate the way you always put her first!"
"For God's sake, my dear Rainy, hatred and jealousy have taken over you. This is not you. I know there is still that sweet girl inside you. You can stop from all this, we promise we will forgive you if you let Mabel go." Sarah finally opened her mouth while sobbing. My father nodded in agreement.
"No!" Rainy screamed hysterically. "No one will be able to stop me this time!"
I was still looking at Adrian, my tears slowly dripped. I didn't want to be separated from him and die stupidly. His face darkened with his hand getting ready to take the gun in his jacket pocket.
Anthonio then mobilized his men to arrest everyone. I watched sadly as my father's hands were cuffed, then Sarah. Ashton tried to fight as hard as he could, but still one against five people wasn't worth it. As for Adrian, he didn't fight back and gave his hands voluntarily to be handcuffed.
Even though I thought my life would end soon, I was sure Adrian had prepared his own plan. He couldn't possibly do nothing when he knew that Rainy and Antonio had a plan to do all of this. What has Andrian planned?
