Chapter 47: Chapter 47

/Lukas POV/

The moment we entered into the medical room, everyone was rushing to make way. Two of the nurses rushed outside with the stretcher. My stomach knotted at the sight of that. Never did I think that I would be back in between those white walls and stench of disinfectant.

"I'm so sorry" She whispered, her head falling on the chest.

I shook my head, "Don't say anything. Nothing is going to happen to you."

"I just wanted to impress..." Her words slurred as she was trying to hold on to my shirt. I tightened my grip around her.

"You did...You impress me every single day."

"Really?"

I sniffled, "Yes I am amazed by you every single day."

She giggled, rubbing her nose, "Why didn't you tell this sooner? Now that I'm dyi-"

"Shut up. Nothing is going to happen to you" I furiously yelled at her. She stared at me for a few seconds before bringing her hand towards my face. I leaned down.

"I'll be fine and so will our baby" She whispered, her hand on my cheek.

Her hands were not cold anymore, which was a relief. They were soft and tiny, softly stroking my cheek.

My eyes fell on her face, which was getting pale, sweat rolling down her forehead. She felt light in my arms as the nurses were trying to get hold of her. I could see tears pooling in her eyes. When was she going to stop being brave all the time? I knew that she was scared just like me.

My gut clenched as those words echoed in my ears. I did not want to lose her again. Not in this life.

"Promise me" I gritted, tightening my hold on her. My voice felt hoarse and caught up in my throat.

Why did I let her participate in that damn thing? I should have known better. Maybe it was my fault, after all. She just wanted to prove herself to others because of my status. All this could have been avoided if I was extra careful and assured her from time to time that she was the one who mattered.

She breathed, "I promise."

Just then, the nurses tugged at her, and she was stumbling her way. They carefully lifted her off the ground and laid on the stretcher bed. My breath hitched in my throat as they pulled her towards the room. I couldn't let her go, so I tried to follow, but one of them stopped me.

I was asked to wait outside because the doctor would like the whole ordeal to be in private. As much as I tried to deny it they wouldn't budge so I had no choice. Stupid, stubborn Greeks.

Yama and Hades joined me as I started pacing outside the room. Nothing was making sense anymore. Who would try to attack Talia in the middle of the competition?

"Hey, she will be fine" Yama patted my shoulder as I leaned against the wall. I hummed, too distracted to reply.

Hades mumbled something in response, but my eyes were focused on the closed room. A few seconds later I heard the squeaking of the door. I rushed towards the doctor, my feet wobbling.

"Is she okay? Tell me she's okay-"

The doctor gripped my arm, "My lord, you need to calm down. Take a deep breath for me."

Deep breaths? What the fuck was he on about? I was worried sick about my mate, and he was preaching to me to be calm. What did I look like to him?

I narrowed my eyes at him, "I'll kill you if you don't tell me if she's fine."

Hades pulled me back before I could lift my arm, "Okay easy there bud."

The doctor slithered back and adjusted his coat, "My lord...I didn't mean to offend you."

"Milos then hurry up with it," Hades said.

"Yeah okay. Miss Talia is safe. We have given a sedative to calm her down. Fortunately, the poison did not affect her."

I let out a sigh.

"And what about our baby? Is it fine?"

Milos licked his lips, "Yes, both of them are healthy. Just give it an hour before you visit them."

"Was the poison in the hotdog?" Yama asked, a worried look on his face.

"That's what surprising. We did not find any of it in those hotdogs. I am sure it's not a poison but a spell."

My mouth fell open. I should have known. No one would risk with the poison.

I thanked him, while Hades patted my arm. He had never seen me so shaken and out of my wits. The entire time I was pacing, so many thoughts went on my mind.

"I told you she's a strong one" Yama softly mumbled as he stood in front of me.

"Yeah, I know" I exhaled, staring at the close doors again. There was nothing more I wanted to do than visit her. But as she was resting, I knew what I had to do.

I turned towards Hades. He was sitting on the couch beside Lord Yama discussing about the spell.

"Hades I need your help."

If someone tried to poison Talia, then they had to be on the ground. And as the cameras recorded the competition, it was my only hope. The person had to be captured on that camera. I knew that all the footage went into the editing room so that they could make a final DVD at the end and distribute it to everyone. At first, I thought of that tradition as cheesy and corny, but now I was getting the hang of it.

"This way!" Hades motioned towards the other hallway.

As Talia was resting in the room, I did not want to leave her alone, so Yama was guarding her. There was a chance that whoever was behind the attack might be responsible for manipulating Fang.

I pushed the doors. There were computer screens everywhere. Two demons were sitting on the chairs, monitoring the entire thing.

"Pull the footage of the hot dog contest" I tapped on the demons chair. He stared at Hades, who gave him a nod.

He tapped something on the keyboard before motioning towards the screen. I narrowed my eyes at the players, scrutinising each and every one. But they were all regular, and I knew most of them.

"It's like finding a needle in a haystack Lukas. All these demons have tricks up their sleeves" Hades sighed, plopping on the chair nearby.

I bobbed my head, my eyes still focused on the screen, "But this is my only opportunity of finding that person. I cannot let that person get away again."

Hades raised his brow, "Again?"

I told him the entire story about Fang and his attempt to kill my wife. He was wide-eyed the whole time. I was going to tell him everything over the drinks, but we did not have a chance.

"Are you crazy?" He squeaked, pushing his chair beside me

"Huh?"

"You know that someone is trying to attack your mate, but you still bought her here?"

I folded my lips together, staring at him from the corner of my eyes, "This is my only clue, Hades. I can't exactly go barging into Mount Olympus and ask the culprit to reveal their self. As most of the demons would be here at the ball, I thought that I would be able to figure them out."

"Well that is valid but still"

I shrugged while flipping the screen to another camera. Just then it clicked me that maybe that's why someone tried to trip us during the race.

"Can you pull the race footage? Few minutes before it started"

The demon nodded and started typing away at the camera. Hades poked my hand.

"Hmm?"

"Do you think your Chinese lover is behind all this? Li Changying has been quiet since she got here."

I thought about it for a while. There was a strong possibility, but why would she ask someone from Mount Olympus to help her. The spells and incantations from their world were just as powerful.

"I don't think so. Besides, she has lost interest in me."

Hades snorted, "Please! I think the only reason she showed up here is because of you. They did not RSVP until the last moment, so what do you think of that?"

I blinked at him, "I think that demons are busy and not waiting for your invitation."

"You'll see I'm right" Hades made a face and sat back. I shook my head and focused my attention again on the screen.

The demon zoomed in all the images for me. That's when I noticed that there was no rock on the ground anywhere. Someone purposely made me trip, but fortunately, I was able to hold my ground and catch Talia.

"There is not a single rock in the footage anywhere" I exclaimed, nudging Hades.

"Yeah, I asked the grounds to be cleaned and smoothed."

"Whoever is trying to harm Talia is in between us," I concluded while asking the demon to pull the hotdog footage again.

As I was trying to flip the screen, my eyes fell on the shadows on the bridge. It was long and narrow, connecting both the buildings of the Underworld. No one was allowed there since the competitions were on the ground.

"I found something."
