Chapter 38: Chapter 38

I stared at him, without blinking my eyes, scared that I will ruin the moment between them. For some reason, I could hear my heart beating loud against my chest. My breathing accelerated like I just ran a marathon. My hands were clammy. What was happening to me? I thought while staring at him. Was it just because of his touch?

I leaned more into his touch, noticing how his eyes turned into a darker shade. I never got the opportunity to see the real colour of the eyes because they always keep changing colours. Maybe they are chocolate brown just like his hair, deep and dark. I wondered.

"Cara" He whispered inching closer. I could feel his breath on my face, which made me shiver. With each passing second, he closed the distance between us, and I was aware of the creaking sound of the bed.

I clenched my eyes shut, letting myself get lost in the moment, my hands by my side. I was scared of doing anything even if it meant moving by an inch.

Just as he was about to press his lips against mine, I heard a loud knock on the door. I squeaked, pushing him apart and whipped my head towards the door. Kira was standing there with her head bent down.

Lukas gritted his teeth together, pushing himself away and adjusting his demeanour. I felt my cheeks redden at the thought of Kira seeing us in that position. It was pretty evident on what was going on before she interrupted.

I tucked my hair behind my ear, shyly staring at the floor. Was he going to kiss me if Kira hadn't come in? The thought caused me to widen my eyes. And the most shocking thing was I would have let him. Why did I do that? Why didn't I stop him? All these kinds of questions were going in my head when I felt Lukas slid away from the bed.

"What is it?" He sighed, staring at Kira who had her fingers clasped together, still not looking up. I always forget that the demons working in the mansion are scared of him.

Kira coughed, "Sorry to interrupt my King, but it's Lord Yama."

Lukas knitted his eyebrows together, "What happened to him?"

Kira shook her head, "Nothing my King. He has requested your presence in the living room. Dean is also looking for you. It is urgent."

Lukas muttered something under his breath and turned towards me. I quickly averted my eyes, focusing on the tray he bought in—macaroni with garlic bread.

"That's my cue to leave" I nodded my head, still not looking at him. How could I? I almost let him kiss me, forgetting everything he had done to me. It was embarrassing.

He tilted my head towards him to which I parted my mouth in surprise. His eyes were red, not as bright as they are when he's angry but still red. A blank look on his face, so I had no idea what he was thinking.

"Don't forget to eat that. I'll see you soon."

"Okay," I croaked, pulling myself away from him. He stared at me for a while before walking out of the room. Kira was standing outside till he left, but as soon as he was gone, she stepped inside the room.

"I'm so sorry, miss Talia. I had no idea that you two were-"

I squealed, "Stop it! Don't complete that sentence."

My cheeks were bright red, already imaging the thing that happened. Kissing him when I didn't know he was a Demon King was another thing. After knowing that he reigned over Hell and the most feared demon, it was different.

Kira sat down in front of me. She was that comfortable now. It's funny how before she wouldn't even address me, but now she was freely talking to me. I liked that changed. Now that Lauren disappeared somewhere Kira was the only one I could rely on. The others were either too fearful or simply hated me to carry a conversation.

"Why are you so flustered?"

At her question, I gawked at her, "How are you not finding this weird? I almost kissed him."

"So what? Our King is very handsome. I wouldn't blame you."

A hot surge of feelings rushed inside me at that statement. I didn't like the way she was talking about Lukas even though it was true. He was too handsome.

"Do you like him?" I questioned, my eyes narrowed at her.

Kira scrunched her nose, pointedly meeting my eyes, "Of course he is our King. Everyone likes him; that's why he's still the King."

I shook my head, "Not in that way. Do you like him?"

Kira pressed her lips together, twisting them in confusion but then she got it. Her eyes widened, and a gasp escaped from her lips.

"Oh, no! No, I don't like him that way, Talia. He's very handsome for sure but way out of my reach."

I smiled at the expression on her face. Suddenly she was pink and flustered. Now that she talked about others demons liking Lukas, I was interested in knowing more about it.

"What about others? Do they like him like that?"

Kira went quiet, looking outside the door before she leaned in closer towards me.

"Please don't tell anyone that I told you this."

I rolled my eyes at her, "Yeah like I talk to anyone besides you."

She bobbed her head as a look of realisation crossed her face, sheepishly smiling at me, "Sorry. Some maids are just waiting for the right opportunity to make a move, you know. No one can blame them though, but our King has never crossed that line. He never bedded anyone from this mansion even though they love to spread rumours about it."

A shiver ran through me in the last part of the sentence. Most of them are always whispering among themselves. But whenever I enter they go quiet and give me snide glances. I have ignored them, of course.

I licked my lips, "What about Li Changyang?"

Kira shuddered at the name, "That miss is always trying to cling to our King. She used to make lame excuses to stay over, but that was decades ago. Our King doesn't entertain her here anymore."

"Oh," I let out a sigh. It still meant that she knew Lukas better than anyone. The thought made my insides clench.

I didn't want to pry anymore because I didn't want to hear something that would make me mad.

Kira touched my knee and motioned towards the tray, "You should eat it before it turns cold. Our King has worked very hard to make it."

My eyebrows shot up, "Lukas made this?"

Kira giggled, slapping her hand over her mouth as if realising that she laughed out loud. It was very amusing to see her hold herself.

She hummed, composing herself, "They are from the packaged box. But still, our King made an effort to put the bread in the oven and boil the macaroni. The maids were shocked because that's the first time we have seen our master in the kitchen."

My mouth opened at that, "Wait you mean he never stepped inside the kitchen? Not even once?"

Kira shook her head, "Not near the cooking area. Never"

"Wow" I blurted out, picking the tray from the desk and placing it on my lap. Suddenly I couldn't wait to try it. I lifted the fork and dug it in the bowl.

Kira stood up from the bed, a gleaming look on her face as she stared at me, "I knew you were special to him, Miss Talia."

With that, she left my room making me wonder if I mean that much to him. Does he care about me?

After finishing my lunch, I took a nap.

A few hours later, as the sky turned dark blue, I was awake. Instead of being cooped up in my room, I decided to go downstairs. Lukas promised that he would be back, but he wasn't, which made me worry.

As I stepped down the voices got louder. Lukas was sitting on the other side of the couch, arguing with Yama about something. Leo and Dean were there as well.

As soon as he saw me, a smile touched his lips. I blushed at the change in his demeanour.

Yama waved at me, and I waved back. He was something. Even indoor he had a three-piece suit on.

"Had a good nap?" Leo questioned, as I wiggled my way towards the couch.

I grinned, "The best..." Turning towards Lukas, I licked my lips, "Macaroni was delicious."

Leo made a face, his lips jutting out, "You had macaroni and didn't invite me? I think we need to terminate our friendship."

Lukas pushed at his arm, "Ignore him. There's something important I need to talk with you."

At that, I turned towards him, "Sure."

"I know I'm asking too much, but I want you to accompany me to the Ball," Lukas said with a serious look on his face.

"The Ball?"

"Yes. Hades of the Underworld organising it this year. We have to leave tomorrow."
