Chapter 7: Chapter 7
As Anna accompanied Jerome through the forested region, the rain began to fall in a slow and steady drizzle, which allowed her clothing to become drenched and cooled her skin. It was necessary to move branches and bushes out of the way and stay clear of them. The sky was unusually bright for a stormy night, giving the impression that it was lit up just before a tornado. Anna did not want to dwell on the subject at this time. She kept her concentration on trying to keep up with Jerome and did her best. That is, until the point where her foot struck a rock that penetrated a tender region on the sole of her foot. The pain rushed up her shins, and much to her chagrin, her ankle began to rotate out of its normal position.
Jerome put his hand on her arm to lend his support. The air was suddenly filled with the terrifying rattling sound of a rattlesnake. He cautioned her in a tone that was hoarse and strained, "Don't move, sweetheart." "You must not move." She mumbled "Oh god" under her breath as a rush of adrenaline coursed through her body, prompting her to flee the terrifying situation. She managed to keep her mouth shut. "In what location is it?"
However, he did not respond verbally to my question. Jerome was able to draw and shoot his gun with remarkable dexterity and quickness. Her muscles tensed up in preparation for the snake's possible strike, in the event that it was unsuccessful. Instead, she discovered that she was encircled by his powerful arms, and he was running his palm over the back of her head. "It's finished. It has expired." Anna gave him a quick blink as the words registered in her mind, and then she immediately turned to look at the proof. Jerome activated the flashlight he had given her so that she could see the snake. She was able to take a deep breath of relief when she saw the rattlesnake that had been killed, but it didn't last long because his arms fell and he grabbed her hand and murmured, "I'm sorry." "We have to get going now. That image just revealed the position of our group. As soon as he had finished speaking, he pulled her into action by giving her a nudge.
Her heart was pounding in her ears, and her adrenaline level, which was already elevated as a result of her contact with the snake, began to spiral out of control. Jerome was persistently walking in front of her, half pulling her behind him. It was obvious that he felt forced to put some distance between the two of them and the location where the shot was heard. Jerome instantly came to a stop and pushed Anna into the bushes as the branches that had fallen to their right began to break. The knot in Anna's stomach tightened. Oh no. It was discovered where they were.
Jerome walked to other bushes that were arranged in a circle and drew her closer to the middle of the circle.
It was a tight squeeze for the two of them to fit in there. After that, he removed the Wesson revolver from the boot holster in which it had been concealed while they were making their getaway. He took it in his hand and pushed it there before sliding his cheek against hers and pressing his lips to her ear. "It's all about staying alive in this game. Don't let your rationalizations dissuade you from pressing the trigger. He examined her face while simultaneously exposing his own as he leaned back and exposed himself. His spine tingled with a chilly sensation. She could see from the tremendous determination and strength in his warm chocolate eyes that he was willing to ask the same of her, even if he was under no obligation to do so. She would resort to any measure in order to safeguard her own wellbeing. She inhaled deeply before indicating with a nod that she understood the situation. His expression conveyed complete satisfaction
He drew her closer to him, the heat from his body penetrating her damp skin as the stubble on his chin brushed her cheek in an affectionate manner. "Stay hidden until I give you the all clear."The contact was brief and then it was gone, which accelerated the rate at which Anna's heart was beating. Jerome adjusted his weight as he prepared to walk away, and then she heard male voices close, including one that she recognized.Anna reached out and clutched his arm, a wave of comfort washing over her.
It was a hushed voice, "Hello, my name is Philip Wesley. He is a member of the FBI. a respectable one" They were spared from harm. She got up and started walking, getting ready to exit the woods. She had just begun to pull herself to her feet when she was abruptly hurled to the ground. Instantaneously, she found herself with her back against Jerome's chest, her chin resting on his shoulder, and her lips resting close to his ear. "Trust no one," was the advice he gave. "No one." Irritated because of the poor handling that was given to her. Her response was more of a half-whisper. "We've met before. He does not tell lies.
"You have no way of knowing that. Her gut feelings were very reliable, and during her career, they had never led her astray."And in the event that his family was put in danger, what then? Would he stand between you and them to protect you? He did not give her the opportunity to respond." Pick your path today. Believe either in me or in Philip. But if you're going with Philip, make sure you have your weapon with you at all times; you're going to need it."He abruptly let go of her, and she barely had time to catch her balance before she was on the ground. When she turned to face him, the expression of fury and ferocity that he sent toward her was unyielding and steely.
When she was under scrutiny and compelled to make a shrewd wager, time appeared to stand still, as it frequently does in the courtroom when there is intense pressure. She had no choice but to take a chance in this situation, and she placed her bets on Jerome. Her chest was constricting from the weight of a conflicting feeling, but she had already made her choice. She sat on her heels, firmly establishing herself, and whispered to him that she was going to remain. The voices were getting louder. She became aware that Jerome had his revolver pulled and was aiming it through the cover of the bushes when she noticed it out of the corner of her eye. She imitated his actions and did the same thing he did.
"Damn. What the devil happened to them? Philip made a demand. Anna could make out his face even through the branches despite the distance between them. "Just chill out," the other man said. "They are now within striking distance thanks to the shot. If they have not yet passed away, we will see to it that they do so before they reach their destination."Relax?" The tone of Philip's speech was one of complete and utter disbelief. "My family, including my wife and my children, as well as everyone else that is important to me, has been put in danger."
"Pedro is very good at getting what he wants, regardless of the cost. You ought to have accepted the money that he offered you and then gotten the heck out of there. I did." Anna had the impression that she had been struck in the stomach. To bend down that low was nothing unusual for someone like Pedro, but the length of his reach was absolutely alarming. She would have to go into hiding while the case was being tried if she wanted to continue working on it, even though the ordeal has only strengthened her resolve to bring Pedro to justice. And she would need Jerome's help to complete the task. The one and only person in her life that she felt she could put her faith in to protect her life. She took a few deep breaths in. a man who posed a threat to her for motives that were unrelated to the investigation at hand. Philip and the other man continued their conversation for a short while longer before parting ways. Both she and Jerome remained still for some minutes. He appeared to be statue-like in that he was extremely, extremely still, but in some way alert and ready. He had suddenly got up and was staring at her with a harsh gaze, making his wrath toward her quite clear. "Let's go. And with that, he left. This time, she did not get an offer for her hand in marriage. He was upset about it.
Anna looked in horror as he moved away from her after pushing his way through the bushes. How could HR be so worked up? She had every reason and every right to have doubts about him. He faced her with a sneer and turned. "Now." His voice was soft, yet it was quite menacing. She gave him an angry look before doing what she knew she needed to do, which was to advance. In what way did she have a choice? He was in a position of strength at this point. I was going to need his capacity to endure in order to beat Pedro and his goons. However, he would eventually get back in control of the situation in some way. There was more at stake than simply making it through tonight. She didn't want to end her life, but she also didn't want to lose Pedro or the boundaries she'd so carefully constructed around the world she lived in. She didn't want to lose any of it. Not now, and certainly not ever. And most definitely not a beautiful Latino with an attitude who believed he could steal her climax under false pretenses, as long as he covered it up with work-related measures, like he had the right to do so. However, he had no right to do such. And to that end, they hadn't yet conducted an exhaustive investigation into the matter, but they will. Oh, they very certainly would.
They were hampered by heavy rain for the better part of an hour till just a few minutes before they arrived at their destination. Then he turned to Anna, which was the first time since their disagreement over trust that he had considered talking to her. His acute indignation was unreasonable but no less real. Because it was so genuine, in fact, it caused him to be a heartless jerk, pushing Anna harder than he should have, ignoring the anguish he knew those goddamn boots were inflicting her, and not communicating with her. The plain and simple reality, though, was that he desired for her to place all of her confidence in him without any reservations. He wanted more than just her trust; he wanted her. Hell, he wanted her.
