Chapter 60: Chapter 60
CHAPTER 60
CLOSURE
REBECCA
I groaned softly as I slowly opened my eyes, the harsh hospital lights piercing through my dizziness. Blinking a few times, I tried to gather my strength, but everything seemed hazy, like a jumbled puzzle. It took a moment for the fog to lift, and as my vision cleared, I saw Dominic and Declan sitting by my side, their worried faces etched with relief.
“What happened?” I said, my voice weak and unfamiliar to my own ears. Dominic leaned forward, his hand gently clasping mine.
“You were kidnapped, Rebecca,” he said, his voice filled with a mix of concern and anger. “Zack, that deranged… man, he took you and... and he almost killed you.”
Dominic’s words had a chilling effect on me as a shiver ran down my spine. Kidnapped? Almost killed? Although the hospital surroundings were all too real, it felt like a nightmare that I couldn’t wake up from. Despite my best efforts, I found it difficult to recollect the series of events that led up to this moment, as my memory seemed to be a chaotic and disorganized mess.
“What... What do you mean? Almost killed me?” I stammered, fear gnawing at the edges of my consciousness.
With a deep breath, Dominic’s gaze became sharper and more penetrating, revealing his intense concentration. He described the dreadful facts, and as he continued, each word felt like a sharp blade piercing through me. Bit by bit, the memories of that fateful night returned, but they were fragmented and confusing, making it difficult to piece everything together. The terror, the struggle, the pain—I had become a victim of Zack’s twisted obsession.
While I was trying to follow Dominic’s train of thought, my mind was racing to grasp the magnitude of what he was saying. It was hard to wrap one’s mind around the depth of evil in the world and the malevolence that some individuals could possess. As the chaos unfolded, Dominic’s lips let out a name that left me completely speechless.
“Megan,” he whispered, his voice loaded with sorrow. “I’m so sorry, Rebecca, but... Megan is dead. Zack killed her.”
“Dominic... What did you say? Megan is... dead?”
“I’m afraid so, Rebecca. She... she sacrificed herself to save you. It was the last heroic thing she did.”
“What was she even doing there? Did Zack take her too?”
“Actually…she was there because Zack ordered. Seems like Megan was with…him,”
“No, no... that can’t be true. Megan would never betray me like that. She was my best friend,” I said with my voice choked with disbelief.
“I know it’s hard to believe, but it’s the truth. Megan wanted to protect you, even at the cost of her own life. She... she lured Zack away from you, bought you time to escape. She... she loved you, Rebecca.” Dominic attempted to clarify and shed light on the matter.
“But how? How could she be involved with Zack? We were inseparable, Dominic. She was like a sister to me.” I whispered.
“I wish I had answers, Rebecca. Megan had her own demons, her own struggles. Zack took advantage of her vulnerability, manipulated her. She made mistakes, terrible mistakes, but in the end, she tried to make amends by saving you.”
“I can’t believe she’s gone. It’s like... it’s like I’ve lost a part of myself. How could I not have seen this coming?” I said, my voice trembling.
“None of us could, Rebecca. Sometimes darkness hides within those we trust the most. Megan loved you fiercely, and in her ultimate act, she showed just how much she cared for you.”
The sadness that I was feeling at that moment was so intense that it was completely overwhelming, causing tears to uncontrollably stream down my face.
“I... I don’t know if I can ever forgive her, Dominic. The pain is too raw, the betrayal too deep,”
“It’s okay to feel that way, Rebecca. Grief and anger go hand in hand. But remember the good times, the laughter and joy you shared. Megan’s actions don’t define your entire friendship. She made a terrible choice, but she also gave her life to protect you. That’s a testament to the bond you shared.”
“I’ll try, Dominic. I’ll try to remember the good and honor her memory. But right now, the pain is unbearable. Losing her... it’s like losing a part of myself.” I said, my voice quivering.
“I’ll be here for you, Rebecca. Lean on me when you need to. Together, we’ll find a way to heal from this tragedy and honor Megan’s sacrifice.”
“Thank you, Dominic. I don’t know what I’d do without you. When is the funeral? So I can at least be there…”
A few moments of silence passed as everyone in the room remained quiet.
“We already buried her, Becca. You were unconscious for like a week.”
“A week? I would like to go to her resting place, please Dominic,”
“Of course. Declan here will take care of your discharge papers and we are good to go. Declan?”
“On it!” Declan said and left the room in a hurry.
“I would like to go on my own, if it is ok with you, love,”
“ Of course you can”
My nerves were on edge as I anxiously waited for any updates in the hospital, my heart pounding with a mixture of anticipation and trepidation. The sterile walls, constant beeping of machines, and suffocating smell of disinfectant were so overwhelming that I could no longer tolerate them after a certain point. All I wanted was to be discharged so I could go to Megan’s grave. Megan, who I considered being my closest friend, had committed an unimaginable betrayal against me. Although we had been through many challenges and obstacles, the bond that we had developed over the years was unquestionable.
With a reassuring smile on his face, Declan finally made his way into the room, signaling to everyone that everything would be okay. The moment he uttered those words, it was like he had lifted a weight off my shoulders.
“You’re ready to go,”
As I felt the overwhelming sensation of relief coursing through my body, it engulfed me entirely, leaving me with no choice but to swiftly gather all my belongings and leave the hospital behind, excited for the new chapter that lay ahead. As soon as I stepped out, I inhaled deeply, feeling the fresh air fill my lungs and bring me a renewed sense of freedom.
Dominic helped me with everything.
“Ready to go?”
“As I’ll ever be,” I said, looking outside the car window.
I was experiencing such intense emotions that my heart was pounding so hard, making it difficult for me to breathe regularly. Dominic’s presence, though, brought a small measure of comfort as we embarked on the journey to Megan’s resting place.
Inside the vehicle, an unspoken emotional weight hung in the air, making the atmosphere feel heavy. As I gazed out of the window, the vibrant memories of Megan and the complex feelings I had towards our friendship swirled around in my mind.
Upon arrival at the cemetery, I stepped out of the car and took a deep breath. The air seemed thicker here, as if the weight of loss and grief permeated every inch of the surroundings. The rows of gravestones stretched out before me, a stark reminder of the inevitable passage of time.
“I’ll be in the car if you need me.” Dominic said, looking concerned.
Without saying a word, I nodded.
Carefully placing one foot in front of the other, I walked through the maze of graves, my eyes scanning the inscriptions on each and every stone, my mind filled with curiosity and a sense of reverence. My emotions were a jumbled mess of sadness and anticipation as I drew closer to the place where Megan now rested. The stone monument was a haunting reminder of her life, with a large headstone standing as a testament to her existence, elegantly adorned with her name in an ornate font. Every beat of my heart felt like a reminder of her absence, intensifying the pain and causing it to clench tightly in my chest.
The headstone was before me and, filled with emotion, I knelt down beside it and traced the letters of her name with my trembling fingers. Memories from the past suddenly came rushing back into my mind, like pieces of a puzzle that fit together to create a bittersweet image. The memories of the laughter we shared, the adventures we embarked upon, and the countless hours spent confiding in each other were still fresh in my mind. Megan, who had always been my unwavering companion, was the person I relied on for comfort during both happy and difficult times.
However, when I reflected on my past, a flood of memories rushed back to me, bringing with it another layer of emotions that threatened to overshadow the happy moments. The darkness that Zack had subjected us to was suffocating, as it confined us to the bounds of that grim room. The weight of Megan’s ruthless words echoed in the depths of my mind, intensifying the sense of despair. It was a stark and bitter reminder of the pain we had gone through together, the hurt and the betrayal that had torn apart the bond that we had once thought was unbreakable.
Despite the betrayal that I had endured, a profound feeling of sorrow that seemed to consume me entirely overwhelmed me. With Megan’s death, a piece of me vanished, and I couldn’t help but feel incomplete without her. As I tried to sort through my feelings, I couldn’t help but feel a storm of conflicting emotions raging inside me, leaving me confused and heartbroken.
I remained at Megan’s gravesite for what seemed like an eternity, pouring out my thoughts and feelings of remorse into the peaceful and hushed surroundings. As I sat there lost in thought, memories of the beautiful moments we had shared, the sound of our laughter that once filled our lives, and the dreams we had dared to dream together flooded my mind. My mouth still tasted the bitterness of betrayal, yet I found solace in the memories that had once brought me solace and joy.
As the sun sank below the horizon, casting a warm golden glow across the cemetery, I slowly stood up from my kneeling position. Despite the tears that stained my cheeks, there was a small but noticeable flicker of acceptance present in my eyes. Megan’s presence would forever remain a part of me, entangled in the memories of my past.
As I walked away from her grave, the weight of my steps was heavy but resolute, and I knew it was time to move forward and create a fresh path that would honor the beautiful memories and painful lessons learned.
I needed closure and I had it.
