Chapter 11: Chapter 11
- Vera's POV -
I immediately answered the call from an unknown number, completely aware of who was behind it.
"My Lord..." I said in a polite voice as soon as I answered the call.
To be honest, a big part of me was scared of him. Who would? Everyone is scared of him, all creatures fear him.
"It has been a while. Anything new?" A cold voice reached me which sent chills in my bones.
"E-Everything is smooth, My Lord. It goes according to your plan..." I answered, trembling with my voice as I looked at the girl that Arman had brought to us. "She's doing great," I added when I saw her getting close with Tobias, the boy near our home.
"You must take care of her." He ordered and despite the coldness and darkness of his voice, I could feel the sincerity and care in it.
"As you wish, My Lord."
The call ended after that and I took a sigh of relief. I was afraid that I might say something undesirable to him. Every word I should say must be careful or else I'll face the consequences, good thing it ended well.
To be honest, our life has been good after Maive came to our life. The Lord has been supplying us with everything we need, especially when it comes to Maive's necessities. I am still surprised that he has ordered us on a mission like this and I really felt honored. At this age, I never thought that he would entrust us to take care of someone's life.
Especially Maive... I have a feeling that she... is the future Queen Luna and it is an honor to serve the queen.
Maive... I don't know what she has gone through or the life that she has lived. But at this age, I could see that she had it rough and terrible. I could hear her sometimes screaming in the middle of the night... probably because of nightmares she had.
I feel bad that it was all for a mission because I really wanted to keep her... to treat her like my own flesh. But in time, she will surely know everything and there is a chance that she will doubt our intentions and she will loathe us for what we have done.
Nonetheless, I have served her not just because of an order, but because I wanted to.
I hope time will stay still... Silas and I are starting to get attached to that girl.
- Maive's POV -
Today will be the day that I am going to take an examination since school will start in a week from now.
Together with Aunt Vera and Tobias, we went to the school near town. It was supposed to be only Aunt Vera accompanying me... but Tobias went along. He was studying in that school and wanted to visit it before the school year began.
The school official administered the test with me being alone with her as she watched me. The questions were quite understandable for me though. Despite stopping from attending school back in our village, I continued studying at home. My father would teach me whenever I find it difficult to understand a lesson.
I answered the questionnaire for probably an hour. With some questions that I was uncertain about, I was quite sure that I did well on most of the questions.
"We'll notify you next week regarding the result," The school official stated.
I nodded. "Thank you, miss." I politely said before going out of the room where the exam was administered.
When I got out, I found Aunt Vera waiting for me outside.
"How was it?" She asked as she placed her hand on my shoulder.
I gave her a wide smile. "I think I did well," I answered honestly. The questions were kind of easy to understand at my age. If I am able to pass that, I will already be in high school. The most exciting phase for students, according to them.
"As I expected," She smiled at me and patted my back.
I looked around, "Did Tobias already go home?"
"Oh, he is just probably roaming around."
I nodded as I looked around the school. It was twice or thrice as large as my previous school. If I remember it right, it consists of four buildings. The highest and largest one is for the high school students. Hopefully, I will be there next week.
However, I was frozen on my spot when I saw someone on the corner of one of the buildings. Right at the second floor, I'm sure I saw someone standing there while watching this area before he stepped back and disappeared. However, no one was in that building, I could see no one roaming there and I'm sure that the building was closed. How could someone be there alone? And for what reason could he be there? I haven't seen his face though, it was far from here and if ever, it looks blurry. One thing I am sure of, it was a He.
"Aunt Vera, have you seen someone in that building?" I asked while pointing at the building on the side. I don't know what building it is though since there is no name or sign that would distinguish it.
Her face turned confused, "No, I haven't. Come on, let's find Tobias."
Have I seen a ghost? I shook my head, probably not.
Aunt Vera and I walked around the school to look for Tobias while my mind was full of thoughts. I was amazed at how the place was built. I have never been in a place as large as this. There was also a gymnasium where the students could play some sports. A large open field with bleachers around was also found.
After some time of walking around, Tobias found us as he approached our direction.
"You're done already?" He asked.
I nodded.
"Shall I tour you around?"
Aunt Vera chuckled as she said, "My knees cannot afford another tour. Probably next week, you two should do that."
I chuckled at the remarks of Aunt Vera. I nodded, agreeing that we should do it at another time.
We decided to go home after that. It was already lunch when we reached home. Aunt Vera had already prepared food for lunch before we went into the school. She only heated it as soon as we got home.
Uncle Silas is at home. He was drying under the heat, the beans that we harvested last time.
"Aunt, Uncle, can... can I go to Tobias place?" I asked permission while we were peacefully having lunch. Tobias went home after our visit at the school. He refused to eat lunch with us because according to him, his little brother was waiting for him so we did not protest.
Aunt Vera looked at me.
"I... We had rescued a cat. I wanted to look at it myself," I explained as I bit my lip with hopeful eyes.
"As long as you take care," Uncle Silas answered before taking the spoon into his mouth.
I smiled widely at him.
"You're spoiling her a lot," Aunt Vera teased Uncle Silas.
He chuckled. "As if you are not doing the same thing, Vera."
After that lunch, I proceeded to wash the dishes and went directly to Tobias' home. He pointed earlier the route into their house while we were walking back from school. I just needed to get past a narrow alley and I will reach his house.
Uncle Silas offered to show me the way into their house, but I refused knowing that he still had a lot to do.
While I was walking in the narrow alley, I felt some eyes pinned on me. When I looked around, I found two men behind me with creepy smiles on their faces.
"You are new here, huh?" Said by the first man who has tanned skin. There were some wounds on his face, looking like he had just gotten into a fight.
I had a bad feeling about them... The reason why I did not pay attention to them and proceeded on walking my way.
Fear crept on me when I still felt them following me from behind. Shit!
