Chapter 38: Chapter 38
Chapter Thirty — Eight
Ava's POV
Jasper and Charlotte stood in the middle of the office room.
Kissing each other.
My eyes widened, and my mouth fell open with shock.
For a second, everything froze and my center of attention became the two people in front of me.
I stood there in the doorway, with my mouth wide open and staring at them. The sound of the door opening had them both turning around. Where they found me with a stunned expression.
The moment their eyes met mine, they both jerked back from each other like they were just burned.
“AVA!” Jasper said, and the trance state that I was in, was broken. His face flushed with anger and Charlotte's with embarrassment. Which soon changed into a glare.
“What are you doing in my office? How dare you walk into my office without knocking on the door?” Jasper shouted.
His tone made me flinch back. His words hit me like blows.
“I … The call …” I stammered in my words, pointing at the phone.
“Answer me!” Jasper yelled, his eyes turned a little red and his face masked with extreme rage. My whole body shook at the blow of his words.
“Get out of here! Now!” He barked. I trembled and for some reason tears filled my eyes.
“Ava? Are you there? What's happening there? Please hurry, darling.” I heard Maria's voice coming from my phone.
Jasper still stood, raging and giving me a death glare, his hands balled in fists on both sides. I swallowed hard and did what I had to.
Instead of complying to his words right away and walking out of the place right away, I walked up to him first. Handing him the phone, I whispered.
“Maria is on the call. Some people have come to your house, claiming that they are from the Tax department. They are threatening to confine all the things and are asking to see you. Maria is pretty scared. She tried to call you, but you did not pick up, so she called me instead. Please look into the matter, I did not want anything to happen to Maria.” I told him. My voice, calm and composed. Jasper was still staring at me with anger on his face, his chest heaving like he had run a marathon.
I handed him my phone. And walked out of that place calmly, trying not to cry.
While I was leaving, I heard Jasper pick up the call in the background.
I took shaky steps towards the elevator, but stopped. I had a doubt that if I tried to take any further steps in that direction, then my feet wouldn't be able to take my weight and hold me upright. Not only that, but I was pretty certain that they would lose balance and I would fall down. My hands were shaking a little, and I was trying really hard not to cry.
So, I stopped in my tracks and held on to the wall, to gain some of my control back.
Suddenly, I heard a door bang open behind me and I startled at the sound of it. It was harsh. I looked over my shoulder and I heard some footsteps rang out before I found Jasper hurrying out of his office looking crazy with rage. I shivered at the sight of it and tried not to say anything. The way his whole face twisted with anger while he was storming towards me with his phone still on his ear, I did not have a single doubt that he was coming for me, to scold me before firing me off this job.
I braced myself for all the harsh words that he was going to throw at me and all the humiliation that I was going to suffer from his hand.
I saw him taking big strides in my direction with his long legs and when he was almost near me, I forced myself to straighten, ready to hear from him. However, instead of stopping near me, Jasper entirely ignored me and walked right past me and straight towards the elevator.
Without giving me as much as a side glance.
He pressed the button and the door pulled right to its side, opening the elevator for him. In no time, he pressed the button and the elevator door shut down completely. And he was gone. Just like that. I kept staring after the elevator like someone was going to pop out of there.
Out of nowhere, somebody spoke from behind me, breaking my unblinking stare competition with the elevator.
“Couldn't have chosen a better time, huh?” I turned to face Charlotte behind my back. I stood there as she folded her arms around her chest and pinned me with one of her stares.
I stared at her blankly because I was blank. I could not understand what she was trying to tell me. Her words almost bounced off my mind, unable to set in.
“What did you see, did not happen? You understand me?” Charlotte questioned me. When I did not say, move or even nod at her, she snapped her fingers near my face, trying to gather my attention. I did come to my senses then.
“You heard what I just said?” She asked me. I nodded my head once.
“You understand me?” She questioned me again. I swallowed hard before answering her question once again.
“Yes.” I told her. With a satisfied look, she backed off but did not leave.
“Now, what was that call about? What was so urgent that you had to barge in like that and Jasper had to leave in such a hurry?” She asked me. Her arms still crossed around her waist.
I cleared my throat before repeating what I had told Jasper earlier.
“It was from Maria. She told me that people from the Tax department had come to Jasper's house threatening to confiscate anything and everything. Maria was scared, and so she asked me to go find Jasper and hand over the phone to him. She tried to call and reach him, but he did not pick up the call, not private nor office. She even tried to call you, but you did not pick up, so she thought that it was because you were b — busy …” I told her. The last line a whisper, I bowed my head, not wanting to meet her eyes.
“Whatever. Go back to work and remember my words. You saw nothing.” She told me, emphasizing the last line. After carefully delivering her message, she turned on her heels, walked over to the elevator and disappeared from my vision for a few seconds.
Leaving me standing there on my own.
