Chapter 607: Chapter 607
Kay Forrest looked up when he heard Jane Quinlan’s voice, and the surprise in his eyes was so apparent that she could feel it too.
He quickly dashed across the road and embraced her tightly.
"You little rascal, are you playing tricks on me?"
His voice was genuinely excited, like a parched tree rejuvenated by a long-awaited rain, his face blossoming into a smile.
Jane Quinlan couldn’t help but burst into laughter at his reaction: "Yes, I am playing tricks on you, and it seems like you’re quite enjoying it."
"Nonsense, how could I not enjoy it.
I’ve been wishing upon stars and moons, waiting for you to come back.
And then as soon as I step out, there you are."
After speaking, he released her and planted a kiss on her cheek: "What’s going on? Weren’t you supposed to come back after New Year’s Day?"
"That was the plan, but how could I be at ease with you sleeping here every day.
I was worried, so I came back early.
If you overslept and turned into a fool, wouldn’t I be the one to suffer later on?"
Kay Forrest chuckled and tousled her hair, this cheeky girl.
"Alright, cheeky girl, learning to give people surprises now.
Not bad, not bad, that’s an improvement. Should I reward you with a little red flower, huh?"
Jane Quinlan pouted: "Do you think I’m a three-year-old kid? Red flowers, really? Are you going to put a diaper on me before you give it to me? Childish."
Kay Forrest tapped her nose lightly: "Alright, kiddo, stop showing off. Come on, let’s go inside."
"Hold on," she pulled him back and brought out two packages.
"I brought some stuff; help me carry them inside, will you?"
"Why did you bring so much stuff?" Kay Forrest casually took them from her.
"It’s the New Year; I can’t come to your house empty-handed."
Kay Forrest raised an eyebrow: "What’s wrong with coming empty-handed? This will be your home in the future."
"Oh my, stop teasing me, it’s nothing fancy, just homemade stuff.
Mr. Forrest might not even like them, it’s so cold outside, let’s hurry inside.
I feel like my ears are about to fall off. I bet I didn’t eat dumplings on the Winter Solstice this year."
Kay Forrest stretched out his arm to wrap her into his embrace: "Come on, let’s go, I’ll keep you warm."
As the two entered the house, the servants, seeing that Jane Quinlan had arrived, were busy offering tea and water.
Every time this young lady visited, they could take a break, and it was indeed a delight for them.
"Grandpa, come out and see who’s here," he called.
Mr. Forrest, who was playing chess in the study, was pushed out by Nolan Moore.
Seeing Jane Quinlan, Grandpa also raised his eyebrows in a delighted surprise: "Oh, Jane’s here."
"Mm, Grandpa, Happy New Year."
"Happy New Year to you too, come, take a seat."
While they were talking, Evie Larkin came downstairs.
Upon seeing Jane Quinlan, Evie Larkin paused, then greeted her with a smile: "Miss Quinlan, you’re here."
"Yes, Miss Larkin, Happy New Year."
"Oh, Miss Quinlan, Happy New Year to you too."
Jane Quinlan said to the auntie in the kitchen: "Auntie, these are things my dad made; when you get a chance, could you please help serve them?"
Before the auntie could take them, Evie Larkin stepped forward and took the two bags.
"Miss Quinlan, let me do that. Please have a seat."
Hearing Evie Larkin say that made Jane Quinlan feel as if she was the lady of the house.
But Jane Quinlan didn’t think too much about it.
She knew that Evie Larkin was the daughter of Mr. Forrest’s lifesaver.
Mr. Forrest treated her like his own daughter.
It made sense for her to be familiar with the place.
Kay Forrest led Jane Quinlan to the sofa to sit down.
This was the first time Kay Forrest had sat in the living room since he came home.
Previously, he would go upstairs right after dinner, unwilling to engage in any extended conversation with everyone.
Grayson Forrest thought to himself, this kid must really not want to see him, otherwise why would he be so reluctant to stay under the same roof?
Nolan Moore wheeled Mr. Forrest over, and Mr. Forrest invited Nolan to sit down too.
It wasn’t long before Evie Larkin joined them.
She poured a cup of tea for Jane Quinlan: "Miss Quinlan, I heard from Kay that you were not coming back until the fifth day.
Why the sudden return? I really didn’t expect to see you here."
"What, are you upset that Jane is back?" Before Jane Quinlan could reply, Kay Forrest’s gaze swept over coldly.
Grayson Forrest chided: "Kay Forrest, watch how you speak.
Evie was just making casual conversation; why are you causing trouble?
Let me make it clear in advance, it’s the festive season, and I won’t allow anyone to make a fuss.
Let’s all keep things pleasant."
Jane Quinlan also tugged at his arm and glared at him: "Miss Larkin obviously didn’t mean it that way, don’t talk nonsense, or I’ll feel embarrassed."
"What is there for you to be embarrassed about? I’m the one speaking, not you."
