Chapter 81: Chapter 81
Leo's eyes were glued to the reports in his hands. This was something else. How did this happen? Yes he spent a night with Cassy that he recalled but the two never spoke about it
He wanted to talk to her about what happened between them but she was avoiding him. He thought she regretted the night they spent together with how she was acting as if nothing happened
"Leo, you know what to do...I know you love Monica but...it's a child we are talking about"Vivienne's voice brought him back from his trail of thoughts as his eyes shifted to her. When Cassy came back to London Vivie was the first to see her; later he was informed by his manager that he saw Cassy with a little boy and he was her son. Of course, Leo didn't believe any of it until Vivie said the same thing to her. When did Cassy have a child? Did she get back to her ex-boyfriend? He knew she had a boyfriend but they broke up. He did a little digging but unfortunately, he found out Blake, Cassy's ex, was already married. He had to dig deep to know where she went to for the past two years and his manager whom he asked to find out the truth and he was told. The lady had no man in her life and recalled how she left. He knew what was happening
"You don't have to worry...I won't let my child grow up without his father" Leo said with a smile as he bent down and kissed Vivie on the cheek. She smiled and ran her hand in his hair.
"Please do it for me...Cassy is a sweet woman...she's kind and loving...give her a chance"Vivie said knowing full well this wasn't just about Leo taking responsibility as the father of Cassy's child. But doing what was right. He wasted enough time and needed to settle down. She had no right to make decisions for him but this was her friend involved.
"You don't have to ask me twice...if it's you asking then I'm willing to do anything"Leo muttered as he got up from his chair and joined Vivie on her bed. Vivienne winced in pain
"I'm...I'm so sorry sweetie...is it hurting" he panicked when he sat beside her. Vivienne nodded as she tried to move unfortunately her body had started paining even more
"I'll get the doctor...I think it's time for your meds"Leo said as he prepared to rush out of the room when the door opened, making him stop getting my attention. I was stunned to see Victor alongside a police detective in uniform..he wasn't so well built like Victor not sure why Victor was always intimidating. His aura was unmatchable. I haven't seen the man for a while and I kinda missed him
"Vic...I was about to get you...I think she needs some painkillers" Leo said as he stepped out of the way and Victor walked right past him
"Do you feel uncomfortable...are you hungry?"Victor asked softly as he stood beside me. I saw how hesitant he was to touch me. This was my problem. The distance in his eyes made me restless but when the tall detective dark-haired man walked closer to me. I was even more restless
"Good morning Ms. Payton." the good-looking man said with a straight face and I nodded at him. Leo left the room and the door closed shut
"Vic...is everything okay?"I asked when he grabbed my hand in his..was the police here to ask me questions about the fire. If so then I had no idea where that fire came from
"Sweetheart he's just here to ask a few questions about the fire," Victor said and squeezed onto the bed and sat down…
"According to what my team found...it seemed there was a gas leak," the man said as he took out a pen and a notepad. My eyes shifted to Victor a little then to the detective. I didn't leave any gas cylinder open. I was always careful when it came to electrical stuff or gas
"I... didn't leave anything like that...i...made sure the kitchen was okay before I left"I was with a child. Why would I be careless? So many strange things happened which I noticed
"Did you lock the door or not... before heading to bed did you see anything unusual?" the man asked, narrowing his eyes. I shook my head instantly but one thing was certain
"I didn't lock the entrance door," I said recalling that I left my apartment door open..hearing this the detective arched his brows a little but not in a bad way..it was more like him saying why to leave the door open
"How come when I came the door was locked?"Victor chimed in and I was perplexed. How did the door lock when I didn't do that? It was weird because even my bedroom door was locked
"Ms. Payton, why did you leave your apartment door open... isn't that a little too careless, "the detective said questionably but I knew why I left the door open. I wanted to look at it but I was aware Victor was on his way although I asked him to stay away. I knew him very well
"He...well Mr. Ellison was in his way...I chose to leave the door open for him"I muttered hesitantly knowing it wasn't easy to say I left the door for a man to get in. Victor didn't seem to mind so did the detective
"Then it's likely someone got in and caused the fire...it was clever of them to use gas leaking…"
"But the fire wouldn't have spread that fast... mostly the doors and windows caught fire first…"Victor said, shifting his attention to the detective who nodded lightly. Victor was right, the fire was unusual. It was like the person knew exactly what they wanted to do. To kill Sky and me. So cruel
"That's right...we saw the CCTV of the night...sir?" the detective said and looked at Victor and both men stared at each other for a while as if exchanging silent words they didn't want me to know of. I got an idea of what was happening. These two men knew everything before they even came to ask me. Someone started the fire. They used diesel to hurt me and spread the fire fast. The only flop to their plan was locking the doors when I didn't and using gas leaking as a scapegoat
"Sir...issue you orders because this was attempted murder…" after some time the detective said shifting his gaze back to me. Victor looked furious I saw from his clenched hands..his face flushed red as his eyes burned in anger
"Arrest her and make sure she doesn't get out...if anyone tries to bail her out...put them in jail" Victor said coldly, his voice was deep and dark as it carried authority and was frightening.
"Rest assured...have a lovely day Ms and get well soon," the detective said with a warm smile. For a scary-looking man, smiling looked good on him
"I'll be on my way," he said his good to Victor and left the room. I wanted to ask Victor who was responsible but I guessed it was Beverly. Was she so bitter as to do that to me when she knew there was a child with me..how could a woman be so evil and heartless
"Take care...I'll be back," the man said and left the bed. He was about to walk away when I grabbed his hand and he stopped right away. He didn't turn but I could feel his arm muscles tensing. Why was he like this
"Vic...please stay"I muttered and tightened my grip around his wrist. I wanted him to stay with me. For me to thank him for everything he did for me... Justin and Leo told me all he did to make me feel better
"Ms. Payton...you are still unwell... I'll ask the nurse to give you a sedative to keep you down for a while" he said without even daring to look at me… his behavior proved my suspicions to be true. He was avoiding me
"Is something wrong...you seem off? "I asked hoping he could turn around and look at me. His body was stiff, so cold and distant as if he didn't want to be in the same room as me...his silent treatment was eating me up slowly causing my heart to ache
"I have something to do...rest for now," he said after a while and wiggled his hand out of mine leaving nothing but a coldness that left me feeling empty inside..like there was a huge hole in my heart. Why was he doing this to me? Did he blame me for what happened?
"I'm sorry she was in danger...I admit I was careless...I didn't protect her as I should have...I understand if you are angry but…"I didn't know why I was saying this so suddenly but the thought of him doing this scared me. Nothing frightened me than Victor ignoring me
"Get some rest...if you need anything...the nurse will be here 24/7" the man remarked and proceeded towards the door. He was ignoring me. It was written all over him. I watched as he opened the door, walked out, and closed it behind him. Tears that I bit back a while ago leaked from my eyes and dripped down my face uncontrollably. I didn't want to cry but I hated this. What was wrong with him?
I attempted to get up or at least follow him, unfortunately. The sharp pain which rushed through my body stabbing my heart threw me back in the bed as my eyes closed and I bit my bottom lip to suppress the pain. I couldn't follow Victor. These burns rendered me helpless.
Immediately Victor left Vivienne's room and closed the door. He didn't leave as he was glued to one spot. His hand clenched tightly such that the deafening sound of knuckles cracking could be heard. His face flushed red from rage. The anger he was suppressing was too much for him to bear but it couldn't be compared to the betrayal.
