Chapter 24: Chapter 24
Shit! God forbid that. I hope he is wrong about this whole scam. I know he will not be able to forgive himself if that turns out to be true. Then again, it’s the fault of those Edwards, not him. He is innocent. Can he stop blaming himself?
“Liam, you are still not sure. Try not to be so negative, and please stop being hard on yourself. Anybody in your shoes would have probably done what you did.” I try to comfort him again. But yet again, I just ranted. Made no sense.
“And if my instincts turn out to be true in the end?” Damn! I can make a dreary guess. The two most influential families will go to war. It will evoke a catastrophe in the whole country. And our relationship will be a garnishing spice in that fight. Hell forbid! “I will never forgive myself, and I will regret my choices more than I do now.”
“But that clause that you mentioned—how come you just saw it recently? Didn’t you read through the contract?” I ask, and he shakes his head.
He didn’t? jeez!
“I was so frustrated since my parents had done all the negotiations and closed the deal. I knew there was no way out of it. I had lost you. So I didn’t care what more I had to lose. I didn’t see the need to re-read what my parents had already explained, and never would it have crossed my mind that some sh*t of a clause like that was in the contract. And neither I nor my parents would have sensed that this was a scam.” He rationalizes in the simplest way.
It was a common mistake that anyone in his situation back then could have made. The mistakes people make in frustration, huh? The results of acting in fury This is perturbing. What is more appalling is that they signed the contract in good faith and with sound will, meaning even filing a case, especially in this corrupted government, might not help. This is one sh*t of a hell.
“Now you understand where I am coming from.” Liam starts, scraping his jaw with one hand. “If this is what I am sensing, we will be ruined. I just can’t let that happen.”
He closes his eyes, looking up as if asking for help from above. I hope the heavens can hear him and prevent the supposed impending doom from befalling us. He doesn’t deserve to go through another series of sorrows and pain.
“What is your plan now?” I implore, squeezing his hand to summon his attention back to me.
He peels his eyes open and breathes out a heavy sigh before speaking.
“I need to act fast and start investing in this. I need to get to the root of this.” He states.
And why does that sound like the beginning of a war? Or is it? Because, prove me wrong here... If these people are cons like he suspects, the moment they realize he is suspecting them, they will start the fire and wrack havoc. They will fight back with everything they have.
It seems like we are very far from breathing a ray of peace. The real battle is about to break out, and all I can do is hope that he will win. No, actually. Rephrase that. We will win. Because I am already involved in this fight. And I promise to help him in any way that I can and to be with him through all this.
“I am here for anything you will need. Anything at all. You can count on me, Liam.” I state, and he soothes my hand with a gentle squeeze to presumably appreciate my help.
He didn’t think I would abandon him in this fight, did he? Because he seems to be contemplating something.
“I know, Lynn. But I got this. I cannot expose you to more danger.” He says that that, and I shake my head.
“Ooh, please, Liam. We better accept the fact that I am so deeply into this. We cannot change that, so let me help.” I contend, and I am right here.
He bends a little, meeting my hand halfway down as he lifts it up, and he gives it a kiss.
“Do you know in what way you can immensely help me?” He queries, leaning so close to me across the table.
“What?” I ask, curious to know how so that I can prepare for it.
“By getting pregnant! Let’s work on that first, baby. Then everything will fall into place.” He finishes with a wink, and it got me thinking... this pregnancy is...
Well, I think I am getting a clearer sense of his plan with this child, especially why he wants it to be conceived naturally. Well, well, well, Liam Morgan Adams! You are also no fucking saint when it comes to cunning, huh? Or am I wrong?
But, wait…
“What will you tell Mitchell about the surrogacy? I mean, I suppose she will want to be informed about the whole surrogacy procedure and all. And knowing that she doesn’t approve of me being your surrogate, she will be extra careful.” I state.
“I will take care of Mitchell. Don’t worry about her.” He affirms, leaving me more puzzled. How will he do that? By keeping her in the dark? How long can that drag on, on, if it's even possible to start with?
