Chapter 16: Chapter 16

“Another contract? What was it about?” I queried, with curiosity and anxiety surging in like savage hellfire, leaving me brimming with vexation.

“We made a mutual agreement stating that she and I are free to have any sexual partners of our choice out of this wedlock, as long as the affairs don’t go public, and we should not bring our partners into our matrimonial home!” Simple and plain, but still leaves me in mind-blowing awe.

I am staring deep into his eyes, but my mind is spinning too fast, preventing me from concentrating on what I am searching for in his miserable eyes. This should probably be made into a movie and titled - Web of Absurdities! Yeah, that title would fit it perfectly! I mean, it is from one absurdity to another, and the series seems to be endless. I presume even my being here is absurd. And this child...

And him—who on this freaking earth does what he did, huh? I mean, that’s the most mind-boggling absurdity of absurdities! The most astounding absurdity of the century How disgusting is it to be married to someone who you have absolutely no feelings for, no sexual relations with, and no desires whatsoever for, knowing that he or she is being screwed by someone else? Like, the hell! No, wait, are these two people even sane? Are they really normal? Like, how can they cope with all this shit? How can they agree on such a matter?

“I…I…I… I don’t know what to say, Liam! These all feel like unbelievable tales!” I finally break the silence, speaking with a heavy heart because I can’t even begin to imagine the pain these two are bearing. I knew he was in pain. I felt like life had deprived him too much, but I never would have reckoned that it would be to this extent. God, people really are pitifully miserable out here!

“Well, I told you that you are not the only one suffering. The only difference is that our pain is incomparable. But all in all, pain is pain.” He responds, staring into space as if reminiscing about his sorrows. Poor soul!

“But how could you come up with something like that, Liam? That was insane! And Mitch consented?” I implore, unsure of what to think of the situation with these two.

“We are both adults, Lynn. We have our own feelings and desires, and that is pretty normal. Ours is a lost course. I don’t think there is any saving grace in this sh*t marriage. So, I didn’t want the beef to thicken even more and find more reasons to detest each other. It was my way of loosening this bond that ties us forever. It was a way of trying to control things, cool some steam off, and create some peace between us. At least if we could find some happiness and distraction out there, things would be a bit cooler in this house. The bitterness we have toward this life would lessen. And we wouldn’t have to be on each other's necks all the time.” Liam explains, leaving me bemused at his selfless action.

What a thoughtful soul. Oh, what a beautiful heart he has. But can they keep up this charade forever? I mean, do they ever stop to think of their future? The time will come when they will have to account for all these decisions and actions. Have they thought of that?

Or perhaps that is why he sought the solution of surrogacy? With a child in the picture, will the public keep thinking that they are the happy, beautiful, and complete family that they are expected to be? Well, is it my paranoid self, or does everyone think that not even this child he has so much yearning for can save them from this? What is there to save if they have both already and willingly broken the vows? I am thinking straight, right?

“So, if nothing can save your marriage, if you two stopped trying to iron things out at all, and if neither of you is interested in this marriage anymore, Liam, what does this baby have to do with all these? I mean, what is the point of this baby when even Mitch doesn’t want it?” I implore because, yeah, what is the point of this surrogacy thing?

It is pretty confusing, right? They have given up on this shit of a marriage. Mitch, as I saw it, detests children like hell right now and doesn’t give a damn about this surrogacy. But Liam is all banked into this - having a child. What exactly does he need this child to save for him? His reputation? His already fallen marriage? Just what exactly?
