Chapter 34: Chapter 34
Han returned on the fifth day to controlled chaos.
Not the bad kind of chaos. The "everyone is doing something but nobody knows if they’re doing it right" kind. The Shadow Legion was packing. Preparing. Getting ready to move with the coordination of caffeinated squirrels organizing a library.
Qiu was taking inventory. Again. For the seventh time. Each count produced different numbers and increasing anxiety.
The twins were dismantling the makeshift shelters. One of them was doing it carefully. The other was just hitting things until they fell over. Hunter had stopped trying to figure out which twin was which.
Chen Lao was organizing food supplies into categories that made sense only to him. "Perishable but edible." "Perishable and questionable." "Already perished, why do we still have this."
Mei was supervising. A seven year old with her arms crossed, watching adults work, occasionally pointing out inefficiencies with the brutal honesty only children possessed.
Hunter was trying to look like he knew what was happening while absolutely not knowing what was happening. Leadership was just confident confusion. He’d figured that out.
Then Han walked into camp. Spear over his shoulder. Dust on his boots. Looking tired but intact.
"You’re alive," Hunter said. "And everyone you left with is also alive?"
"Yes. All fifteen delivered safely to Willow Creek. No incidents. No attacks. Boring journey." Han set down his spear. Surveyed the organized chaos. "You’re packing."
"We decided to move. Waystation three days west. Better resources. Actual buildings. You know, all the things we don’t have here."
"Tomorrow morning. Dawn. Before anyone changes their mind or something attacks us or I remember I have no idea how to lead people through dangerous forests."
"Realistic assessment." Han accepted a waterskin from Qiu. Drank deeply. "Willow Creek is stable. Quiet. The families will be fine there. They send their thanks. Also one of them asked if you were single. I said I didn’t know. Are you single?"
"The merchant’s daughter. Widow. Thought you were heroic. Asked if you were available for correspondence."
Hunter’s brain blue-screened. "I saved people from squirrels and someone wants to write me letters?"
"Apparently heroism is attractive. Who knew." Han’s expression was carefully neutral. Definitely hiding amusement.
"I’m not—I don’t—there’s a child who thinks I’m her father and a soul cult and we’re about to walk through a forest that wants to kill us. Romance is not on my list of problems."
"Your loss. She was pretty."
"I know." Han finally smiled. Small but genuine. "Camp looks ready. You did well. Nobody died while I was gone. Nobody destroyed anything important. Standards are low but you’re meeting them."
"That’s the nicest thing you’ve ever said to me."
"Don’t let it go to your head."
They stood there for a moment. Watching the Shadow Legion prepare. Fifteen people working together. Chaotic but functional. A faction that shouldn’t exist doing things that shouldn’t work.
"We’re really doing this," Hunter said. "Leaving. Building something. Becoming an actual organization instead of just survivors hiding in a cave."
"Yes. And it’s going to be a disaster. But we’ll survive. We’re good at surviving." Han picked up his spear. "Where do you need me?"
"Wherever something is breaking. Which is everywhere. Pick a disaster and fix it."
"That’s my specialty."
Han walked off to yell at the twins about proper demolition technique. Hunter watched him go. Felt that weight in his chest shift slightly. Having someone competent around made everything less terrifying.
Still terrifying. Just less.
[LUNA] HAN LIKES YOU (◕‿◕✿)
"As a person he’s obligated to keep alive."
[LUNA] AS A PERSON HE RESPECTS
"I’m trying to figure out how to move fifteen people through a murder forest. Can the emotional analysis wait?"
[LUNA] FRIENDSHIP IS IMPORTANT
[LUNA] YOU NEED MORE FRIENDS
[LUNA] YOU ONLY HAVE LIKE THREE FRIENDS
"I have more than three friends!"
[LUNA] MEI IS YOUR DAUGHTER
[LUNA] THAT’S DIFFERENT
"...I have two friends."
[LUNA] THAT’S WHAT I THOUGHT (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
The afternoon continued. Packing intensified. Arguments about what was essential versus what was "technically essential if you think about it." Qiu’s definition of essential included his entire ledger collection. Han’s definition included seventeen different weapons. Little Sparrow’s definition included a rock he’d named Gerald.
"We’re not bringing Gerald," Hunter said.
"But Gerald is part of the family!"
"Gerald has personality!"
"Gerald is mineral deposits with no consciousness!"
"You don’t know that! Have you asked Gerald?"
Hunter looked at the rock. The rock did not respond. Shocking.
Little Sparrow looked betrayed. Clutched Gerald to his chest. "Fine. But when we need a lucky rock and don’t have one, don’t come crying to me."
"I will definitely not do that."
The kid wandered off muttering about rock discrimination. Hunter added "argues with twelve year olds about pet rocks" to his list of leadership responsibilities. The list was getting concerning.
By late afternoon, most of the packing was done. Supplies organized. Routes planned. Everyone knew their roles for tomorrow’s departure. Even Tao and Xuan had stopped breaking things for a whole hour. Progress.
The Shadow Legion gathered for evening meal. Last meal in the cave. Tomorrow they’d be on the road. Exposed. Vulnerable. But together.
People were talking. Laughing. The nervous energy of impending journey mixed with relief that they were finally doing something instead of just waiting.
Then Little Sparrow stood up. Cleared his throat. Looked at Hunter with the kind of determination that suggested this was about to become everyone’s problem.
"I want to be a bandit," he announced.
The camp went quiet. Everyone turned to look.
Hunter stared at him. "What."
"A bandit. I want to be one. Official one. Not just Shadow Legion member. Actual bandit." Little Sparrow’s eyes were bright with excitement that suggested he had no idea what he was asking for. "We’re going on the road. Building something. I want to be part of the bandit part. The robbery part. The cool part."
Hunter felt a headache forming. "You’re twelve."
"Why does everyone add the half?!" Hunter rubbed his temples. "You’re just a kid. You don’t know what you want. Hell, I don’t want to be a bandit but here we are. No choice in the matter."
"But you’re good at it!"
"I’ve robbed one village and felt terrible the entire time. That’s not good. That’s just having low standards and worse options."
"It really doesn’t." Hunter looked around for support. Found none. Everyone was watching with entertained expressions. Qiu was taking notes. Probably for his unauthorized pamphlets. "Look, kid. This isn’t a game. This isn’t some... Toyz R Us for bandits where you just sign up and get a starter kit. This is dangerous. Illegal. Morally questionable. All the things children shouldn’t be."
Silence. Everyone staring at him with confused expressions.
"What’s a Toyz R Us?" Little Sparrow asked.
"It’s—" Hunter stopped. Right. Pop culture reference. Nobody here knew about extinct retail chains from his dimension. "Never mind. Point is, you’re too young for banditry. Go play with Gerald."
"Gerald is discriminated against!"
Before the rock argument could escalate, Mei stood up. Small. Serious. Looking at Hunter with that expression that meant she was about to make his life complicated.
"I want to be a bandit too," she said calmly.
Hunter’s eye twitched. "No."
"Because you’re seven!"
"Seven and a half. And I’m a cultivator. I swore an oath. I’m Shadow Legion. If Little Sparrow gets to be a bandit, I want to be a bandit."
"Nobody gets to be a bandit! Especially not children! I’m drawing a line here! A reasonable line!"
Wei Lin raised his hand. Calm. Methodical. Like he was asking a question in class. "Can I be a bandit too?"
"I just wanted to clarify the requirements," Wei Lin said reasonably. "If Little Sparrow qualifies at twelve and a half, and Mei qualifies at seven and a half, then logically I should also qualify at eight. Unless there are other criteria I’m missing?"
Hunter stared at the eight-year-old who’d just used logic against him. "The criteria is YOU’RE ALL CHILDREN."
"But we’re cultivators. Body Refining Level 1. That’s the same as the adults who just joined. So the distinguishing factor can’t be cultivation level. Is it age? Experience? Or something else?"
"It’s—you can’t just—stop using logic!"
"Logic is useful for understanding rules and expectations," Wei Lin continued with the calm rationality of someone who’d thought this through. "If we’re going to be part of the Shadow Legion anyway, understanding our role seems important."
"NOBODY IS DOING IT!"
Too late. The floodgates opened. Every kid in camp wanted in. Three voices all talking over each other. All demanding their right to join the bandit activities. All completely ignoring Hunter’s increasing panic.
This was his fault. He’d made the Toyz R Us comment. Put the idea in their heads. This was karma for every bad decision he’d ever made manifesting as child bandits.
Qiu leaned over. Whispered conspiratorially. "You know... this could actually work."
"Junior division. Start them young. Train the next generation. Very strategic."
"I’M NOT RUNNING A DAYCARE FOR CRIMINALS!"
"Technically we’re not criminals yet. We’ve only robbed one place. That’s barely a crime spree."
"THAT’S STILL CRIME!"
Chen Lao spoke up. Voice of elderly reason. "They’re already cultivators. Already part of the Shadow Legion. Might as well give them purpose. Structure. Keep them busy so they don’t cause trouble."
"They’re going to cause MORE trouble if we officially make them bandits!"
"They’re going to cause trouble anyway," Teacher Bai added. Scholarly logic. "At least this way we can supervise. Control the chaos. Make it educational."
"EDUCATIONAL BANDITRY?!"
"I could develop a curriculum. Reading, writing, mathematics. Applied to practical situations like supply distribution and strategic planning."
"You just described teaching kids how to rob people efficiently!"
"Exactly. Education."
Hunter looked at his faction. At the adults who were supposed to be voices of reason. Everyone was nodding. Agreeing. Thinking this was somehow a good idea.
He was surrounded by people who’d collectively lost their minds.
[LUNA] OH MY GOD (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
[LUNA] THIS IS HAPPENING
[LUNA] SHADOW TOYZ R US BANDITS
[LUNA] JUNIOR DIVISION
[LUNA] I’M MAKING IT OFFICIAL RIGHT NOW
"Luna, don’t you dare—"
[LUNA] ◈ SUBDIVISION CREATED ◈
[LUNA] SHADOW TOYZ R US BANDITS
[LUNA] JUNIOR DIVISION OF SHADOW LEGION
[LUNA] PURPOSE: TRAINING, EDUCATION, MINOR BANDITRY
[LUNA] AGE REQUIREMENT: 12 AND UNDER
[LUNA] THREAT LEVEL: ADORABLE BUT CONCERNING ♥
"I hate everything about this."
[LUNA] YOU’LL LOVE IT EVENTUALLY
[LUNA] THEY’RE VERY CUTE
"They’re future criminals!"
[LUNA] CUTE FUTURE CRIMINALS (◕‿◕✿)
Mei walked up to Hunter. Looked him in the eye. "I’ll be the leader."
"Junior division needs a leader. I’m the most responsible. I’ll do it."
Little Sparrow protested immediately. "Why you?!"
"Because I’m first member of Shadow Legion. And I don’t argue about rocks."
"Gerald is important!"
"Gerald is sedimentary."
"That’s rock discrimination!"
Wei Lin raised his hand again. "Actually, I’d like to propose a structured leadership model. Mei as primary leader makes sense given her tenure. But we should establish clear roles and responsibilities to avoid future conflicts."
Hunter stared at him. "You’re eight."
"Yes. And organizational structure is important regardless of age. May I suggest Mei handles strategy, Little Sparrow handles... enthusiasm, and I handle logistics and risk assessment?"
"You want to be the junior division’s tactical analyst."
"Someone should be. Otherwise we’ll make poor decisions."
"YOU’RE EIGHT YEARS OLD!"
"I’m aware. That’s why I’m being proactive about establishing good habits early."
Hunter watched a seven year old and an eight year old discuss organizational hierarchy while a twelve year old argued about rock rights. Watched his daughter—because that’s what she was now, apparently—take charge of child bandits like it was the most natural thing in the world. Watched Wei Lin treat banditry like a school project that needed proper planning.
This was his life. This was actually his life.
"Fine," Hunter said with the resignation of someone who’d given up on sanity entirely. "Fine. Shadow Toyz R Us Bandits. Junior division. Led by a seven year old. With an eight year old tactical analyst. Why not. Everything else is already insane. Might as well commit to the bit."
"Seven and a half," Mei corrected.
"I stand corrected. Seven and a half year old bandit leader. Much better."
Qiu was already taking notes. "We’ll need small weapons. Training manuals with pictures. Maybe tiny masks for intimidation."
"We’re not giving children tiny intimidation masks!"
"Why not? Very cute. Very marketable."
"Every good organization has merchandising opportunities."
Hunter put his head in his hands. Accepted his fate. He’d tried to prevent this. Failed spectacularly. Now he had a junior bandit division led by his surrogate daughter with an eight-year-old doing risk assessments.
At least things couldn’t get worse.
Hunter looked up. Tao was standing. Hand raised. Eyes bright with terrible ideas. Thıs content belongs to novel⁂fire.net
"You’re twenty-four," Hunter said slowly.
"But I’m very immature!"
Xuan stood next to him. "I also want in the junior division!"
"You’re both adults!"
"Age is just a number!" Tao insisted.
"Age is a clear categorical distinction that you’re both failing!"
Lex raised his hand tentatively. "I don’t want in the junior division. I just wanted to say that. For the record. In case anyone was wondering."
"Thank you, Lex. One person with sense."
"I do think they should be allowed though. Very funny."
"Comedy is important. Morale building."
Hunter looked at his three disciples. At two grown men trying to join a children’s bandit division. At the absolute chaos his life had become.
"Fine," he said. Voice dead. Soul departed. "You want in the junior division? Sure. Why not. You’re too old but definitely dumb enough to qualify. Welcome aboard. Join the seven year olds in their tiny crime organization."
"REALLY?!" Tao’s face lit up.
"No! Obviously no! You’re adults! Act like it!"
"I was being sarcastic! That’s sarcasm! Learn to recognize sarcasm!"
"Oh." Tao deflated. "That makes more sense."
Mei had been watching this entire exchange with the patience of someone used to adult incompetence. "They can’t join," she said firmly. "Age limit is twelve. Rules are rules."
"Since when are there rules?!" Hunter demanded.
"Since now. I’m making them. That’s what leaders do." She looked at Tao and Xuan. "You’re too old. Sorry. Join the adult division."
"There’s an adult division?" Xuan asked.
"That’s just the regular Shadow Legion," Hunter explained. "That’s what you’re already in. This conversation is going in circles and I want it to stop."
[LUNA] CURRENT SHADOW TOYZ R US ROSTER (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
[LUNA] LEADER: MEI (7.5)
[LUNA] MEMBERS: LITTLE SPARROW (12.5), WEI LIN (8)
[LUNA] ROLES: MEI (STRATEGY), WEI LIN (LOGISTICS), LITTLE SPARROW (ENTHUSIASM)
[LUNA] APPLICATIONS REJECTED: TAO, XUAN (TOO OLD, TOO DUMB)
[LUNA] GERALD THE ROCK (DENIED - NOT SENTIENT)
[LUNA] THIS IS PERFECT ♥
"This is not perfect. This is a disaster waiting to happen."
"All disasters wait to happen," Chen Lao said wisely. "That’s what makes them disasters. The waiting."
"That’s not wisdom! That’s just stating how time works!"
"Same thing at my age."
Hunter gave up. Completely gave up. Let his head fall back. Stared at the cave ceiling. "We’re leaving tomorrow. Junior division or not. Shadow Toyz R Us or not. We’re walking three days to a waystation that might not even exist anymore and we’re doing it as a group that now includes organized child bandits with a logistics officer. This is fine. Everything is fine."
"Are you okay?" Mei asked.
"No. But I stopped being okay weeks ago. This is just my normal now."
She patted his head. Three pats. Always three. "You’ll adjust. You always do."
"That’s what I’m afraid of."
The camp settled into evening routines. Last preparations. Last checks. Tomorrow they’d leave. Tomorrow the real journey began.
Hunter lay on his bedroll hours later. Stared at the cave ceiling. The Shadow Legion around him. Fifteen people who’d sworn their souls to him. Including three child bandits with defined organizational roles.
This was his life now.
Tomorrow they walked west.
Tomorrow everything changed.
[LUNA] GET SOME SLEEP (◕‿◕✿)
[LUNA] BIG DAY TOMORROW
[LUNA] DAWN COMES EARLY ♥
