Chapter 39: Chapter 39

Sharon had decided to leave London for good but she also knew that she was almost due and would need all the help she could have and it would do no good going too far from one source of help she could rely on and that was David.

She also needed to know that he continued with his therapy and continued to improve in health.

She was therefore not aware of the dark shape that crept up to her from behind inside a packed car.

She jerked startled when her arms were held.

She looked up into the intense eyes of Gerhard.

'You?'

'Yes, me'.

'Were you expecting someone else?'

'Not exactly but you scared me half to death. I almost thought I was being abducted'.

'That is really a very tempting idea. Abducting you and taking you far away where you and I only will be enjoying our days', he said playfully but there was an underlining seriousness to his words that made her shiver.

She did not have any response to that because she had already told him that she had a thing with Bryan.

'I see you are pregnant. Is it also for your spoil spot friend?'

'I'd rather not talk about it and by the way, he and I are through and are no longer together. Right now, I want to go to someplace I can have some peace and quiet '.

'You do not have to ask it twice but pregnancy really becomes you, you are looking lovelier than ever'.

'Thank you!'

Gerhard was a demonstrative man and before either of them knew it, he had bent and given her a resounding kiss.

Sharon was shocked at first but laughed out of nervousness.

Gerhard led her into her apartment where he helped her pack the few things she had not been able to pack the previous day and carried it into the boot of his car and locking the door, they drove off.

Another shape came out of the shadows, seething. He had come to see of he could speak to Sharon about their relationship but the sight that had met his eyes had discouraged him.

He had seen the car waiting and as Sharon came home, though he had not heard what was said, he could make out that Sharon had gone on some sort of vacation with Gerhard.

Was Sharon a lose girl or what? David had refused to marry her and she had decided to go with the next best thing? Could she not consider him at all?

What if David was not the father of her child but Gerhard?

He had felt like coming out of the shadows and giving Her hard a punch for acting so intimately with his girl but what right did he have to do that and now, he had lost her for good.

If only he had not been too arrogant and had told her exactly how he felt, maybe she would have considered him or perhaps again she would have made fun of him.

Some weeks later, it was time for her to go into the hospital and the first person she called to be with her was David.

She had told him about Gerhard and his help and that she had told him that she couldn't impose on him longer than necessary and neither could she marry him because it would not be fair on him and he had still insisted on helping her.

David came to the hospital that she had described to him and was there as the pain raked through her body in waves.

He helped her like the nurse had directed, asking her to take deep breaths when the pain came.

She kept doing this until the pains and contractions started coming with no space between them at all, the nurse came and David wanted to leave the ward but Sharon asked him to stay and he did, marvelling at the gift of life and the strength of a woman.

The baby's head came out first and after ascertaining that there was no cord round her neck, pulled the baby out and gave it to the other nurses there to go and clean up.

'You have a girl, congratulations!' The nurse said to Sharon.

David was besides himself with joy. He had experienced life come into the world and had one more reason to live.

'Thank you for giving me this opportunity, Sharon. I feel brand new like I have been reborn. I wish you could marry me. Is there any chance of that?'

'David, we have discussed this several times and even if we discuss it everyday, my answer would still be the same. Let's not belabour the issue'.

'Would you marry Bryan then if he proposed? Because he needs to know. We are denying him his paternal rights. He should be the one here with you and not me'.

'Re you regretting that I called you over then?'

'No. Nothing of the sort. I am privileged to have experienced this but I am not that heartless nor selfish to realise that the owner would appreciate the experience far more than I'.

'Bryan lost that privilege a long time ago. Let's not get guilty over it and you must promise not to tell him about me, I mean where I am till I am ready to come back to work'.

'Though I'd rather not keep it away from him, you have my word that I shan't be the one who will tell him where to find you'.

Sharon heaved a sigh of relief as the nurse finished cleaning her up and brought in her already cleaned baby and placed her on her chest for breastfeeding.

It was after the delivery that Gerhard was allowed in because the nurses had wanted only the baby's father and Sharon had preferred that David be the one with her because she did not want any misunderstandings between Gerhard and herself.

They stayed at the hospital for two days and it was after they had been discharged and free to go home that David who could not contain the news anymore broke it to the staff at the bank and everyone was full of congratulations.

His joy and enthusiasm further confirmed to the staff that the baby was David's.

Asking where they could see her so that they could visit her and organize a baby shower for her, David refused letting it slip. She does not want any visits for now. She will soon return to the office and you can organize whatever you wish for her. Right now, she wants rest and time alone with her child'.

Bryan was cold and remote. He had kept visiting her house with the hope that she was back from whatever trip she had taken with Gerhard but had not been able to find her and it had frustrated him further. And now she did not want anyone visiting her. He had not known that she was such a selfish human being.

He also did not understand what was going on. If David was the father of the child like his countenance seem to portray, then why allow the mother of your child and your baby to stay with another man though you may not want to marry her?

He had wanted to ask him this question on several occasions but decided against it. Whenever Sharon got back, he would taunt her into giving answers to all the questions frustrating him.
