Chapter 40: Chapter 40

"Please, place your hand on the pack totem," the court clerk instructed.

Kayla placed her hands over it.

"Say after me... Everything I say hear will be truth, and nothing but the truth,"

Kayla repeated the same words, and Cole's lawyer stepped up.

"What's your name, miss?" He asked.

"Kayla," she responded.

"Who are you to Miss. Amy?" He reiterated.

"Her best friend," she replied.

"How long have you been best friends?"

"As long as I can remember,"

"Can you be more specific?"

"No," she replied.

The lawyer sighed.

"Is it true that you both live together?"

"Yes,"

"How long?"

"We began living together when she got pregnant,"

"When she got pregnant,"

"Why did you allow your best friend to harbor the pregnancy in secret, instead of telling the person who impregnated her?"

"Didn't you hear when Amy said he was nowhere to be found? She didn't even know him! Even if she did, do you think he would've accepted the pregnancy? He left the morning after they had sex"

"Now that he's here to take care of his son? Why is your best friend proving stubborn?"

"Because he has no right taking the child away. He's her child. Someone can't just come out of nowhere to snatch him when wasn't in his life for the past seven years of his life"

"And if he's allowed into his child's life? Where and when will he get the chance to be with his son?"

"He doesn't need to be in the boy's life. We were all doing well before he came - both me, Amy and Tris. We can do very well without him, so he can fuck off for all I hear," Kayla spat.

"Order in the court," the judge voiced out even before Cole's lawyer could object.

"My Lord, I cannot work with this woman of she continued to speak in this manner to me,"

"Miss. Kayla, vulgar words are not allowed in this courtroom. This should be the last time you'd use anything inappropriate, you shall be walked out of this room, and I'll be forced lean towards Mr. Cole's claim"

Amy tried to make contact with Kayla, and when they eyes met, Amy shot her a death stare.

"What the hell is wrong with you? Do you want to ruin this for me?!" Amy wolf questioned hers while they still had their eyes on each other.

"I'm sorry. I just let my emotions get the best of me. But you can't entirely blame me. This lawyer guy is asking me the dumbest of questions. I don't even know how Cole came across him," her wolf replied.

"Did it cross your mind that he might be asking those stupid questions to get under your nerves so you'll explode, and then he'd make us both look bad and unfit to nurture Tris?"

"Shit,"

"Exactly!"

"Miss. Kayla, are you in the room with us?" The lawyer's voice interrupted the silent conversation with Amy's wolf.

"Yes,"

Amy turned to Sheila, who was sitting not too far away from her.

Sheila begged to follow them to court today, but Amy began to wonder about her use here, seeing that she'd been on her phone since the case started. It seemed like she'd been taking videos and photos of herself.

Amy didn't know whether to take her attitude as an insult or not.

She just looked away as faced the lawyer.

"Did you hear my question?"

"No,"

"Where do you live, and where do you work?"

"I live somewhere on Denois Street, Louisiana. I used to work at...," Kayla stared at Liam.

"I used to work in a tech company as a receptionist, but I quit recently?"

"You quit, or you were sacked?"

"That's the owner of the company I used to work at," she pointed to Liam.

"Confirm from him whether I got sacked, or whether I resigned,"

"Why can't I ask you? Are you not the one in the dock for questioning"

"How many times do I have to say that I quit? Why ask me a question if I do not believe me? How stupid is that?" Kayla flared up at the man.

"Miss. Kayla!! This is the last warning the court will give you! One more inappropriate use of words, and you'll be walked out of the court!!" The court clerk warned.

Amy rolled her eyes and rubbed her throbbing forehead in frustration. Why.did she have to fall for it every single time?

"Moving on, I have another question. Is it true that on the day of my client's confrontation with your best friend about his baby, he was assaulted by you?*

"Well yes, but it was for a reason. He said mean things to me in the past-"

"Do you know that that act is punishable by law according to the Red Moon Kingdom constitution, chapter 57, subsection 32A?"

Kayla opened her mouth to speak, but she looked lost.

Lost and scared.

"A woman who uses vulgar words to the point of not being able to control herself... Unemployed and living in one of the low condition areas in the whole state... Assaulting people for unjustifiable reasons... My Lord?"

The judge looked at him.

"Are you seeing what I'm seeing?"

"And what are you seeing?"

"That this woman is not to be around children. Apart from the fact that she and her friend are unemployed and that they are not exactly living in the best conditions, her inability to control herself when angry will be a threat to the poor kid. Plus, as they say, birds of the same feather flock together. It won't be a surprise to me if Miss. Amy is just as explosive as her friend over here. Which makes me begin to wonder... What if young Tris has been facing verbal abuse, living with this women-"

"Objection, my Lord!" Lawyer Rousey jumped up to her feet

"I will not sit down here and watch my client belittle and insult my clients in this manner! How dare he speak of them in such demeaning words? This is the highest form of prejudice I've seen in my life!" Lawyer Rousey argued.

"Objection sustained. Mr. Tom, that was too much. Be warned," the judge warned Cole's lawyer.

"My Lord, and colleague, if I overstepped the boundaries of pointing out facts, then I sincerely apologize. All I'm saying here is that, from these facts I have stated here for the court, it's obvious that my client is in a better position to take care of young Tris than Miss. Amy. That being said,.it is only fair that my client takes custody of the child. I rest my case," the lawyer said and went back to his seat.
