Chapter 34: Chapter 34
The skies were turning orange and I can already see the sun coming out from the mountains. I smiled as I watched the beauty of the sunrise in awe.
"It's beautiful," I gasped. My eyes are surely twinkling at the sight of it. For me, sunrises mean hope and new beginnings. It's a new day and we need to forget about the darkness of the night.
I looked over at Jeff who is staring at the skies too and I couldn't help but smile. A lot of bad things had happened to me but I am glad that I have met him. I was lost in the darkness but he helped me find the light.
He's my sunrise. He's a part of the new beginning of my life. He marked the start of another chapter of my life-a a life to redeem myself and show everyone that I can be more than just an omega's daughter.
Jeff suddenly looked at me. "Why?" he asked me. I bit my lip before smiling widely. "I realized that you are like a sunrise to me," I started. I looked down and fiddled on my fingers before letting out a heavy breath. "Because you saved me." I slowly looked up and saw him still staring back at me. His gray eyes bore into mine like he's trying to trap me inside his gaze, inside his world. "Ever since you let me inside your mansion and sheltered me, I have always seen you as someone who gave me a chance to come back stronger."
His brow furrowed as he listened to what I had to say, I don't tell him things like this because I always end up digging my own grave. But I sincerely want to thank him now. I don't know if it's the sunrise, the lake or it's just the overwhelming feeling inside my chest that pushed me to do this. I don't know if this might be the last I will see him after now. No one they say knows the future, so let me pour my heart in peace concerning how I feel for Jeff.
I looked away and sighed hard. "I know I have always told you that I am a burden, but I just think that way because I'm very grateful for everything you've done for me." I smiled widely at the orange skies.
"I just can't imagine what could have happened to me if I hadn't bumped into you here."
I heard him sighing hard. "I want to ask you why you ended up in the forest but I don't want to force you into telling me something you are not comfortable sharing yet," he said in a raspy voice.
A turned to him and smiled. "Thank you. Thank you for
understanding," I told him. Even if I tell him, I don't think he'd believe me anyway. Wolves are tales for humans. He nodded and we witnessed the sunrise together.
We were silent until we suddenly heard a rustling sound around the tree on the south of the lake. Jeff immediately stood up in a protective stance, placing me behind him.
"Jeff," I called him sounding so scared. They could be rogues for all I know! What can we do against the rogues? If only I could shift into my wolf right now. Not that I don't think I could be of great help.
"Ssh…" he placed his index finger on top of his lips. "Don't talk," he told me as he looked in the direction where the sound is coming from. He held my arm as he waited for something to get out of there.
We heard a growling sound before a familiar brown wolf came in sight. I cannot be mistaken. This is the rogue that chased after me.
I was already shaking in fear as I hid behind Jeff. I can't believe that after enjoying the view, we'd be facing extreme danger next.
"That's a wolf," I whispered, telling him the obvious. He's not moving and I can't see his face right now. I can't see if he's nervous or stunned.
"I know," he replied nonchalantly. He didn't sound troubled. There's not an ounce of fear in his voice and I wonder where he's getting all the bravery and courage. We could be killed any minute now. "Just relax," he ordered me.
I couldn't even let the words sink in. I was already thinking of how we could escape this moment. We should walk away and pretend that we have not seen the wolf. But I couldn't even move right now. I am paralyzed on my post, hands holding onto jeff's black hoodie.
The rogue started walking towards us and I can feel a pounding with every step he makes. Shit!
We should run away." I whispered but Jeff shook their head. He was looking straight at the rogue. "Jeff!" I sed because the rogue was already getting closer and closer. But he's not responding to me at all. He's not budging. Damn it!
I couldn't breathe properly with my heart about to burst inside my ribcage. I want to run how but Jeff is acting like he can take on a huge wolf! Is he stupid?!
The rogue stopped, staring at us for a few moments. I knew it! This is the end of me. There's no way I can survive this one. Not when he's already too close to where we are.
I gulped hard, praying that someone would come and save us. But then I was shocked when the wolf growled one last time before turning his back on us. He walked back to the forest and ran away from us.
I furrowed my brows, confused and shocked to my wits. What happened to the rogue? Why is he suddenly leaving us when I was sure he was about to attack us straight on?!
Jeff turned to me and smiled. "We're safe now," he said as he held my hand. "Let's go home." He started walking, pulling me behind him even when I was still trying to let the situation sink into my system.
"What happened there?" I asked him. "What did you do? Did you do anything?"
I looked back in the direction where the rogue went. My mind is still confused. I still don't know why he suddenly left us. But hell, I am so happy and relieved that we survived that. I have successfully run away from them only to be killed him eventually?!
Jeff was serious. "I just stared at it," he replied. narrowed my eyes in confusion. "You just stared at it and it left?" I asked, baffled at what he told me. I'm pretty sure he is wolves, in nature, won't care if someone looked at him in the eye or not. If one's angry and hungry, he'll kill everyone in front of him.
Unless…
I shook my thoughts. Impossible.
I cannot stop thinking about it. It's night time but I still can't figure out what happened in the forest. I don't know if it's possible. I have already made up crazy and stupid excuses in my head. Maybe some rogues are merciful, too? Maybe they can be considerate, too? Maybe Jeff's gaze exuded enough pleading that the wolf had no choice but to run away.
It's crazy. I'm going crazy.
I sighed and walked over to the window to stare at the moon when I saw Jeff talking to someone again. But this time, it's not the same man I saw with him last time. This one's livelier. He was smiling at Jeff before handing him a folder.
I immediately hid behind the curtain before he could even notice me up here. But he just left immediately. He was jogging out of the gate until he was gone in the darkness of the night.
I pursed my lips in a grim line as I watched Jeff open the file he's holding. Now, that could be his secretary. Maybe he gave him an urgent document.
I shook my head and started to walk to the bed. I badly want to sleep and forget about what happened earlier in the forest. But every time I close my eyes, I can remember the look on the rogue's face. I can feel the danger again.
I sighed hard and rolled on the other side of the bed. I should be okay. Nothing happened to us. Jeff was wise enough to keep calm and not panic. And even though I have some wild thoughts in my head, I just tried to convince myself that Jeff was not lying to me. But he didn't. He just stared at the wolf.
"Stop thinking about it." I lied on my stomach and buried my face on the pillow as I chanted that sentence inside my head, hoping it would help me fall into slumber.
My phone suddenly lit up. I immediately know who that is because I only have one contact on my phone.
Jeff::
Are you still awake?
I pursed my lips as I typed in a reply.
Me:
Why?
I didn't have to wait long before his reply already came in.
Jeff:
I'll be out tonight. I'll be back tomorrow at lunchtime. narrowed my eyes at his reply. I looked at the time. It's already past ten in the evening and he's going out? Is he having a night out with his friends?
Me:
Okay. Have fun. I sighed hard and buried my face on the pillow again.
Jeff::
I'm not going to have fun. But you should sleep now. I'll leave you tomorrow.
I smiled weakly before sending a simple 'Okay: He didn't. reply after and I only got my answer when I heard him driving off.
I frowned and sighed. Now I'm alone again. Maybe! need to sleep now.
The next morning. I was woken up by the doorbell. I groaned as I didn't even bother combing my hair or washing my face.
I don't know to remember how I fell asleep but one thing is for sure, I woke up late. The sun is already high up.
The doorbell rang again when I was already walking down the stairs. I pursed my lips and glared at the door. Did Jeff forget his key? The way he rang the doorbell seemed like it's an emergency.
"Coming!" I beamed as I ran to open it.
But instead of Jeff, I was greeted by a middle-aged woman, dressed in a luxurious formal dress with her hair tied in a clean low bun. Her face is made up and the crystals on her jewelry are twinkling with the sunlight. Her face is eerily familiar, especially her eyes, and even with the obvious wrinkles on the sides of her eyes, she still looked fabulous.
W-who are you?" I asked with shock obvious in my voice.
She raised her brow. "Who are you?" she asked me back.
What are you doing in my son's house?" My eyes widened in shock. No shit! This is Jeff's other?!
She studied my face and I suddenly remembered thadidn'tdn't even comb my hair. Her gaze went from my head to leg before going back to my face again.
I could feel my nerves taking over my system as I let Jeff's mother scrutinize me. "I-I'm s-sorry, ma'am," I stuttered but she only stared at me.
"Are you my son's mate?" she asked and I felt one of the biggest shocks in my lifetime. Am I dreaming?!
