Chapter 447: Chapter 447
The head guard was stunned.
’How did we get here?’
He did not understand a single thing that had happened. They were supposed to be working on a weak female and a human as such. Most of the Faes thought humans to be beneath them and did not take them seriously.
When he had appeared there, wanting to bow to her.... what a ridiculous notion! But then looking at the scene unfolding in front of him made him gasp, momentarily forgetting his position and his abilities.
The three guards hit the ground hard, skidding across the cold floor as if an unseen force had swatted them away like insects. One whipped past him, and the other hit a wall adjacent to him.
He was not sure where the third one was and the tiny voice at the back of his mind seemed to be prompting him that there was no wall in his immediate vicinity. However, he was too shocked to register this. Their grunts of pain filled the silence, but no one dared move.
A faint, otherworldly hum lingered in the air, vibrating against their skin, raising the hairs at the back of their necks. The most fearsome guards in the whole kingdom were afraid of a little girl!
A breeze swept through the dungeon, unnatural in its touch ... it wasn’t cold, nor warm, just... present. This was not supposed to be possible because there was no inlet to the outside!
But it was like something unseen had passed by, whispering secrets only the dead could understand. Even for Faes, who were used to doing the impossible with their powers, they could not wrap their heads around this!
No one knew who had spoken but they all had one mind that she was not just a girl ... she was something else.
Shelby slowly descended to the ground, her bare feet kissing the stone with an eerie grace. She didn’t stumble, didn’t even flinch. Her expression was unreadable, indifferent, yet laced with something else. Something far more dangerous. Her blue eyes were all white, adding to the somewhat creepy feeling.
A shiver ran down the spines of every Fae present. They were four who had come to Shelby, which had been quite ridiculous but then they had never expected this!
The leader of the guards, the Fae, who had seen battle, blood, and horrors beyond counting, took an unconscious step back. His throat felt dry. His instincts screamed at him to kneel .... or to run.
But he did neither. He was too bewildered even to comprehend his own thoughts. Turning around, he saw that the two of the Faes were unconscious and one was still moaning.
He swallowed hard, forcing his voice to remain steady, but failing miserably.
"...What in the gods’ name are you?"
When he had first stepped into the dungeon, something had been... off. A pressure in the air, subtle yet suffocating, had pressed against his chest, and for a fleeting, absurd moment, the guard had felt the ridiculous urge to bow.
There was no royalty there and even among the royalty, he chose which ones to bow to, based on his position, so how could he bow... to her.
A mere human girl. How could he, the one guard that all others bowed to, even entertain the notion that he wanted to do this?
He had scoffed at the feeling then, dismissing it as nothing more than a trick of the mind. But now ... now as he stood there, his men strewn across the floor, his own legs wavering beneath him, he understood.
He also understood why the first guards, even though did not hold high positions, had not been able to do their tasks. He had heard of how they treated the human as if she were a gem. He had thought that it was because she was to be their queen and also because she was human, they wanted to ensure that she would not get hurt. How wrong in his assumption he was.
She was not just human.
The air around her shimmered, a faint distortion that sent a primal warning through his bones. Her eyes, once filled with fear, were unreadable now, as if something ancient had stirred awake within her. It was still glazed over and all white.
... and for the first time in years, he felt it ... true fear.
He dropped to his knees and thumped his head on the floor as if he was bowing to their one true monarch!
He had no control on his actions at all!
True to Brian’s words, he was let out that same evening. Two guards came and took him away with not so much as a word to Murray.
’I’ll get the task done!’ Brian used his mind link to communicate to Murray before he left. Murray never opened his eyes to look at the two guards. He remained in his meditative pose but understood what Brian had referred to.
Murray was too worried about his mistress, so he was trying ever and any means to break through the barrier and talk to her. He just needed to find out if she was okay and, in that moment, only Brian, the bookkeeper, could help him do this.
Along the way, Brian sighed dramatically as he shuffled forward, chains that had been put on him for the transport, clinked lightly with each step. He had ceased to be surprised at how he was being treated there though,
"Yes, yea... yea... I hear you." The guard started, making Brain question himself,
’Did I say something?’
Obviously, the single guard did not hear this thought and continued,
"You are not special in any way... just an old sack of bones taking up space."
"Oh really? And how is that?" He sniffed, glancing at the guard from the corner of his eye. Even though Brian had asked a question, it was not like he was expecting an answer from him. On the contrary, Brian knew which buttons to push on any individual to get what he wanted.
"But tell me something, boy....."
The guard’s jaw clenched tightly as being called a boy irked him,
"...you ever get tired of that scowl? Must be awful heavy on the face. Maybe that’s why you ain’t got yourself a wife yet."
The guard stiffened, his grip on the hilt of his sword tightening.
"Ah, see, hahahaaaa .... that right there’s your problem. No charm, no finesse. All brute force. Tsk... tsk... tsk..."
Brain tutted, shaking his head. "No wonder they stuck you with dungeon duty. The females must be tripping over themselves to avoid you... right?"
The guard’s eye twitched.
"Keep talking, old Fae, and I’ll ..."
"You’ll what? Leave me here?" Brian smirked, slowing his steps further. That was exactly what Brian wanted. This was because their prisons were tightly guarded and his only way of infiltrating it was from the inside. That meant that he needed to get to whatever he wanted to do before he stepped out of the prison.
"Now that would be a real shame, wouldn’t it? Leaving an old, frail elder in the damp, dark corridors where he might just wander off... Is that how you mama thought yo-"
The guard let out a sharp exhale, nostrils flaring. "I swear to the gods, you’re insufferable!"
"Ah, and you’re just now noticing that? I can’t believe that you’re dumb too! My gosh!" Brian slowed and leaned against the wall, rubbing his wrists where the chains had been. He had managed to goad the guard to get the chains off.
"Off you go, lad. Go take a breather before that vein on your forehead bursts. I’ll just... stand here, right where you left me. You need to take that breather."
The guard growled in frustration, turned on his heel, and stormed off, muttering curses under his breath. He had forgotten that he was to take Brian out. In his confusion, it had escaped him.
As soon as he was out of sight, Brian man chuckled, dusted off his robe, and strolled leisurely down the corridor in the opposite direction, and then making sure that there was no one in sight, brought out his wings and zapped off.
"It should be just about here..."
Brain whispered and entered the last opening to where he felt Shelby’s energy from, but even he stopped mid-flight with the surge of power coming from there.
"What in the world ...."
He slowed down feeling an unbearable weight pulling him down. He was a bit familiar with this.
’A bit of that girl’s aura and then ... Prince Roman’s? How could this be? What-’
Brian’s eyes widened, his heart thumping, then got down to his feet as he rounded a last bend.
Looking at the scene that greeted him, Brian’s mouth dropped,
The moment the realization struck; his entire body went rigid. A shudder passed through him, and before he knew it, he was sinking to his knees. The cold stone bit into his flesh, but Brain barely noticed.
With a reverence that even he couldn’t explain, he bowed his head until it touched the ground. Silence stretched, thick and suffocating, as if the very air acknowledged what had just transpired. When he finally lifted his head, his expression was unreadable ... shock, awe, perhaps even a hint of amusement dancing in his eyes ..... Hahahahaaaa....
Straightening, he dusted off his knees and let out a dry chuckle. "Looks like I’m not needed here," he murmured, shaking his head in something between disbelief and admiration. With that, Brian turned on his heel. "I’ll wait for the show," he added over his shoulder, voice laced with amusement.
He took only a few steps before something else shifted in the air ... something he didn’t see. A flicker of power, a grasp of something different, the weight of an unseen force pressing down on those who remained, with a strong flash of light in the darkened space, but he was already gone.
