Chapter 423: Chapter 423
"So, that’s what happened...." Currey completed his narrative and looked at the dazed couple. Currey signed. He had expected denial from them as it wasn’t every day that one would hear that their son was not fully human.
Alex turned to look at his wife, but instead of surprise, he saw Geneva thoughtful instead.
"Is this what you wanted to tell us?!" Alex demanded. He was worried that his wife was in danger and this stupid assistant was telling them fairy tales! But even in his anger, there was a little voice at the back of his mind that pointed to instances that had happened in the past, especially with Ian.
Take the fact that Ian had snapped the neck of one of the workers and everyone in the estate seemed to have forgotten about it. Also, when Katie had overhead them, Ian had ’managed’ it.
Alex was not sure how, how one would wonder how Katie suddenly had lost her memory. Talk of timing!
There were many other small instances, but Alex was a rational man, and such things were just nonsensical!
"If you’re done with your nonsense, I’ll send my wife to the hospital for her to be treated!"
"Is what you’re saying true?" Brad asked quietly. Brad had not seen what Aliya had done but he had come into the receiving room, just after she had left. This was also when he got access to the recording that was circulating.
He had left the T-Vino Wineries in a hurry and had thought to rush back after a change of clothes and talking to his parents about chasing that Aliya person out, but only found his mother’s predicament.
However, all his anger died away when he saw his mother in that state. It was Samantha who had briefed him of what had happened as no one was in the mood to talk. In his frenzy, he had followed to his parents’ room, only to hear of this.
Brad was also not overly surprised. He had been on the receiving end of a strangeness from Shelby and had personally seen what Ingrid could do.
Currey sighed, yet again. If he had his way, he would not tell the old couple, but with the Sorrow Weaver in the house, he had to make all of them come on high alert.
"I wish it were nonsense... but deep inside, you suspect it yourself."
Geneva, on the contrary, was deep in thought. From the time where she had lost her ability to speak, she had been thinking of a lot of things and Ian was prominent among them. I mean, how could a mother not know? She knew from the onset that her baby was different in a way. However, she never told Alex. Why would she, when she was not sure of what was different with him.
Besides, around that time, she had been engrossed in the sorrow of losing or being abandoned by Roman.
But, in as much as Geneva did not like it, she knew that Roman was different. Initially, she had thought that he was cosplaying but after years, she started to have her doubts. She was unsure of what the issue was, but like Alex, she had also had her fair share of seeing the unordinary in her son.
Like how his wound would heal within hours, as a kid. She never understood how scratches could fade within hours, and deep wounds, within days. Also, this Currey person had been with Ian for as long as she could remember, and he basically looked the same. She had not made that connection till that day.
Currey did not bother to beat about the bush. To prove his point, he disappeared from right in front of them. One blink... he was there. The next... he was gone, as if the very air had swallowed him whole. Geneva clutched her chest, her breath catching in shock, but no sound came out, while Alex stiffened, his grip tightening on the cane he had barely needed until now.
Of the people in the room, only Suzie, who stood by the door and Samantha who was seated opposite her grandparents, had not reacted.
Brad gaped, his heart skipping a beat, but he was not as extreme. It was almost as if all the Thornston family members had been desensitized to this.
Then, just as suddenly, Currey reappeared, standing exactly where he had been, as if he had never moved at all. A whisper of cold air lingered in his wake, the kind that sent a primal shiver down the spine, as if something unnatural had just brushed against reality, which was what he was trying to prove.
Alex squinted at him, skeptical but intrigued. With a huff, he shifted his weight and muttered, "What kind of magic trick is that? Hah! I’ve seen street performers vanish behind curtains and mirrors. But you..." He jabbed a finger at Currey, suspicion creeping into his tone. "I give it to you ... you’ve got flair. But I don’t like things I can’t explain."
Alex’s words were defiant, but his eyes told another story. He knew, deep down, that this was no illusion.
Currey did not bother. He knew that all would be clear with the subsequent things ....
He removed a green vial from his pocket and handed it to Geneva,
"Please take this and you will be okay."
Geneva knew how stubborn Alex was and did not give him time to intercept it, she took it without question and gulped it down.
As soon as the liquid touched her tongue, a surge of warmth spread through her body, washing away the fatigue in her bones. Her muscles no longer ached, her breath came easier, and a lightness settled into her limbs, as though a great weight had been lifted.
Her mind felt sharper, clearer... like a forgotten vigour had been rekindled within her. It was as if time had loosened its grip, leaving her renewed, stronger, and impossibly alive.
Most importantly, she coughed loudly and hard so much that she brought out a thick phlegm and then,
"I can speak? OMG! I can speak!"
Brad rushed to Geneva’s side and hugged her tightly. He was never one to be overly touchy, but at this moment, he just wanted to do that.
Alex jumped up from the seat he had just taken, surprised!
"What did you give her?"
"Something from my land..."
"You mean.... I mean.... Never mind!"
Alex ended up not saying whatever he wanted.
"I’m glad that it worked out." Alex sighed and then took the seat again.
"There are a few things that I want to say and that is why I had to thrust you into our world, knowing how dangerous it is...."
"What do you mean that it’s dangerous - ?" Alex asked but Geneva was the first to piece the fragments together,
"Shelby’s accidents have been related to that?"
Currey nodded, sending a pointed look at Brad, making him squirm,
".... And I suspect that this is also one of them..."
"As long as His Highness remains alive, Her Highness, should be well.... I am not sure what state she will be in, but I think she will be alive somewhere. We just must reach her before the worst happens...."
Alex and Geneva exchanged relieved glances. Brad sagged on the floor, ’She and Ian going to be okay!’
"Why do you keep calling them that?"
Currey hesitated a little ....
"Wait, what if that woman overhears?"
"You don’t have to worry about that. I made sure that no sound will leave these walls."
Currey smiled, "That, and even more!" then he added, "I’ll leave that shield in place, for as long as she remains in this estate..."
Alex nodded, with gratitude. He had ceased to question Currey at this point,
"Master Ian comes from the royal family of my land...."
He looked straight at Geneva,
"The man you met, was a full-blooded royal and the next in line of the throne of our land...."
"Another thing.... Faes never go back on their promise! From what you said, something might have happened to prevent him from coming back for you-"
Geneva froze, as did Alex. Alex was not sure whether he could be happy at this news or sad. The had been married for so many years and he had stopped entertaining thoughts of this man coming back.
"I wanted to tell this last time, ma’am.... And I am glad that the opportunity came up.’
Geneva nodded at Currey and gave Alex’s arm a slight squeeze but said nothing. That was enough for him to understand her intentions.
What Currey liked about this family was how accepting they were. HE could feel their genuine concerns for Ian and Shelby and that made him happy. Besides, he would not have told them, if he had any inclination that they were not.
Just as suddenly, Brad asked,
"Will Shelby also be comatose, like Ian?"
"I can’t answer that, unfortunately.... But my brother, Currey is with her, and I am hoping that he is doing his assigned task of protecting her, no matter what state that she is in."
"Does she know of this bond you talk of?" Alex and Geneva asked, referring to Aliya,
"I am unsure of how much she knows, but what I do know is that she is dangerous! Very dangerous! Especially to the males around here..."
Alex widened his eyes, trying to comprehend what that meant, but Currey interjected,
Currey went ahead to tell them of his findings of what Aliya was.
Momentarily after he was done, no one spoke. They felt a chill down their backs, thinking of the type of person that they had dined with for days.
"A siren that...." Brad could not complete the sentence and scrunched his face in disgust.
"Is Ingrid also like that?"
The two questions sprung up simultaneously.
