Chapter 401: Chapter 401
As usual, Currey felt it before he saw it happen again... and like most past times, he was as powerless to stop this, even if he could. The thing was that he and his brother had tried approaching Ian in times like those once in the past, and they had felt that raw, fatal threat against them.
When Ian was sparked into an uncontrollable frenzy because of Shelby, they had one rule: ’Do not interrupt him unless you seek death!’ Obviously, they only had Ian and his wife’s best interest at heart but, Ian was just not approachable in those times!
So, Currey could only look on helplessly as Ian disappeared from the very eyes of those two humans!
However, Currey was not idle. He immediately pulled out his phone and scoured the news. This was for the simple fact that one of the detectives had tried to give some information to Ian before he had been triggered.
Currey always made it a point to be on top of the news and everything around them in order to have a full grasp of the course of actions. He did not know what had happened but it was only Shelby who could trigger Ian , so Currey had to know what was going on.
Except that this time, he had miscalculated... big time. Currey would come to regret his very actions in a brutal way. His thoughts would be,... I wish I had pushed harder for us to do this and that.... Especially against that one person!’
Currey’s face set in a grim line after seeing what was trending. Everything made sense to him in that moment, but he had more pressing issues to deal with.
He could not afford to follow his boss yet because of the two men in formal uniform in front of him.
Currey was indeed worried about his brother as well because he could reach him through any means at all.... For Currey, he knew that the most pressing need was his mistress but....
He pocketed his phone and, as the bright light dimmed in the office, saw that one of the detectives had fainted while the other one seemed to have frozen in place, his fingers pointing to where Ian had been just moments ago.
Currey took two steps and knocked the remaining detective out. He took a few moments to hover his hands on their heads, his eyes tightly closed. Currey knew that he did not have enough time to totally rid them of all the memories of what they had just witnessed because if what he thought was the issue was as it was, then there would be more for him to ’clean up’. Without Murray, it would be taxing on him, but not impossible.
He ’scanned’ their minds and implanted a few things, then tapping the two of them, disappeared and reappeared in front of the building with the two.
Currey sighed. The few people at work and in that vicinity were screaming their hearts out, and he did not have to look to even understand what was going on.
Chairman Ian stood there, his eyes all white, fury bubbling off of him. Currey could deduce what had happened.
Ian’s power was being unstable again!
Unbeknownst to him, he even looked scarier, carrying two bulky men in either hand as if he were holding two water bottles. It looked physically impossible but Currey held on with ease!
But, Currey had no time for the audience. He dropped the two detectives in their car and then closed his eyes. He opened his hands wide and muttered a few words amidst the screams, as if chanting. HE concentrated his reach as much as he could. He needed to do a little damage control and come back for the rest later.
All of a sudden, the screams stopped, and all the people froze as if they were stuck in time.
Finally, he stepped in front of one of the receptionists and placed his hands on her, then whispered a few instructions to her. Currey did not forget to wipe the CCTVs for the day clean. All this took a couple of minutes.
He quickly walked up to Ian.
"Your Highness, it’ll take a few more seconds for them to wake. We must leave...."
"I- I- Can’t reach her.... I can’t get to her...." Ian’s voice chocked,
"Your Highness, if you tap into your bond, are you able to pinpoint her location?"
"I-" Ian’s voice choked, and Currey’s eyes widened in surprise. Even though this had happened a few times, he was very surprised that Ian could not reach Shelby even through the bond.
Currey sprang into action immediately.
"Your Highness, if one means fails, we can use another.... Let me check...."
However, Ian was not listening. He closed his eyes, thinking of Shelby and disappeared, only to appear a few steps away from Currey. Nothing was working and his anxiety increased with each passing second!
Currey called Ava, Murray, and Albert’s phones, but none of them went through.
That was when he understood the gravity of the situation.
Currey kept telling himself to get a grip and stay calm. Finally, he called Rocky, and a short-term calmness washed over him,
"Master Rocky, have you heard from your sister?"
"No, why do you ask?" Came the reply,
"Yep, about a quarter of an hour ago. She had told me that th...."
Currey listened for a while, and then, thanking Rocky, he hung up, disregarding Rocky’s questions of why.
He immediately switched on some things on his phone. Currey started tapping into cameras, and then,
"I know where they might be!"
Currey rushed at Ian, who was getting more disoriented by the moment. The two disappeared from the front of the building before the workers, whose memories had been tampered with, stirred awake. Obviously, Currey was very confident in what he had done and did not hover around.
Ian and Currey re-appeared in some fields, overlooking one of the highways. Frankly, Ian was in no mood to even think of where he was. There wasn’t a single car in sight.
"Are you sure they were headed this way?"
"Yes, Your Highness, I know the severity of the matter. The last cameras captured them heading this way, and they had not gotten back to the estate, so my best estimate is th-"
Just then, the serenity shattered by the sudden roar of an engine. Ian pushed past Currey when he heard the engine. He would recognize that car from anywhere.
At that moment, his hyper heart and nervousness started to calm down, but that did not last.
The car, veering erratically, appeared at the curve, its headlights on, even at that time of the day, and this was what caught Ian’s attention.
However, they were a bit far from the side of the road, so Ian started to run as long foliage whipped at his face, but this did not stop him.
This was for the simple fact that Albert was the best driver he had ever seen. Ian had no idea his emotions were so erratic and why he felt something terrible was about to happen. However, seeing the car like that, he could not help it. His power was almost as good as useless because his human instincts had taken over.
Ian froze mid-run as he watched a second vehicle skid and appear on the same bend.
"No, no, no..." Ian whispered unconsciously as his heart began to feel as though it were being squeezed by an unseen hand.
The words stuck in his throat like broken glass. Ian’s feet refused to move, rooted to the ground as he watched the car sway dangerously as it was being pursued, the tyres losing grip. Every instinct screamed at him to do something, to stop the nightmare that seemed to be unfolding before his eyes. Ian’s heart dropped as the thought occurred,
’Why was there a second vehicle following his wife’s?’ His eyes registered the scene, but the comprehension was far from the reality.
Shelby’s vehicle skidded violently. It looked to hit a patch of loose gravel, the tyre screeching in protest, and in that instant, time unravelled. Ian felt like a spectator to the devastation unfolding, powerless as the vehicle lifted off the ground and flipped into the air.
His eyes sleeted to the end of the highway or the bend that led to a cliff below it. As if watching a slow-mo movie, the scream that tore from his throat was raw, primal, but the sound was swallowed by the first crash—metal smashing against the earth, glass shattering like a thousand dying stars as it veered off the last stretch of road.
Then he saw it. A body flung free, tumbling through the air like a ragdoll before hitting the ground. Ian wanted nothing more than to run to her, to cradle her, to tell her it was going to be okay.
The whisper tore through the veils of time and distance, as if she had whispered the words into his ears, which sprung him into action. However, Ian’s body was not obeying him! His legs buckled, and he fell to his knees, watching in horror as the disappeared and continued descent toward the cliff.
"No! Please, please, no!" Ian shouted, his voice cracking under the weight of despair. The car teetered at the edge, giving him a cruel, fleeting hope before it plunged into the abyss. For a moment, Ian could only sit there, his hands clutching his head as silence swallowed everything around him.
The emptiness hit him like a tidal wave. Every moment with his Elvin—her laugh, her smile, her eyes, her distinct look, the way she whispered his name—flashed before his eyes, cruel memories that mocked him now.
Tears ran down Ian’s face and into his beard, and then it registered, ’She was flung out!’
That pushed him like an adrenalin. He disappeared and reappeared at the place where the body had been thrown. One look and Ian’s heart shattered to pieces. It was not her!
A brief hope surged in Ian’s mind but that was easily shattered when it dawned on him of the implication of this. His eyes looked at the empty space, the skid marks and few scraps remaining on the road and the last tattering edge snapped!
A wave of anger so tremendous and unfathomable replaced all senses in him. Ian turned his head at the other car that had grounded to a halt by the roadside, and then he pounced in that direction.
