Chapter 300: Chapter 300
After Katie had been ushered out, the only sounds in the room were the light and periodic tweets and chirps of the birds outside, coming in through the window.
"What are you going to do with her?"
"Find out what she knows and what she had been tasked to do."
"Will .... Will she be alive afterwards?"
"If you want her to be...." Ian added swiftly, holding his mother’s gaze.
Geneva sighed, "I – She has been with me all these years a-"
Ian simply said and Geneva did not continue. The tacit understanding had been reached.
"It’s about time for the new mistress of the Thornston household to take over."
Geneva and Alex nodded, "Suzie is more than enough to handle and oversee the household." Geneva was pained, and she tried to hold that in. Her hunch had been correct. She had kept this from Katie but never knew that Katie would send the message across as soon as she heard of it.
That was why Geneva had done a lot of things differently, including the wife selection for her sons.... She wanted to let them choose of their own accord, except Ian’s case had been special, but that worked out in the end. Brad will have to rely on his own capabilities to find a wife, but with the way he was, Geneva had little hope.
Just then, Geneva lamented, "They will not be happy with me for replacing Katie,"
"When did my wife ever think of people’s feelings? You are the lady of the estate. Anything you say goes!"
Geneva smiled nervously. It looked like even after all the years; Geneva was really wary of her in-laws.
"To whom did Katie send the message?" Alex asked, and Geneva dismissed her sentiments and handed the phone to him. He took a casual glance at it and then said,
"I’m sorry, dear. If I had kept my end of the bargain, this would not be out there, but I know that this is not what my siblings wanted. They would like to save face and would never broadcast this...."
... and Alex was right!
Geneva had still not forgotten the original reaction or response that she had been looking for from her son. She decided to think of Katie later.
On the other hand, after Katie had been taken away, Ian mulled over two main points.
The first was that his mother probably did not know that his father was nonhuman and secondly, his father, Roman, never abandoned his mother.
This was for the simple reason that Roman had given Geneva a token of their love and he had promised her his heart and marriage.
Faes never go back on their promises. From what Ian knew, the words promised by a Fae were not treated lightly, so that left only one sure explanation.
Something prevented Roman from coming back and that something made sure that after four decades, Roman was still at large. Faes were not tricksters, so Ian was very sure that whatever had happened to Roman was that bad, and he had not tricked nor left his mother.
"I am not a child to be worried about who my father is or who is not. That is a problem for you and the old man to worry about."
Then Ian turned to Alex,
"What was your purpose in bringing this up?
Alex examined Ian’s face as if searching for signs.
"Do not wrong, Shelby, by tolerating the family’s nonsense. You do not have any obligation to do what they want-"
"And you think that I would let my wife suffer just because I may not relate to you by blood? You overthink, old man!"
Alex smiled at Ian, shaking his head.
"Whatever happened in the past stays in the past and will have no effect on my decisions today."
"This is too much like a drama!" Brad, who had remained quiet during this time, decided to talk, causing all three in the room to look at him in disbelief.
"Since I am not and will not be the first son, please do excuse me. That was a lovely love life you had there, Mum. It was touching! But I never heard it, and he..." Brad gestured towards Ian, ".... Is your first son! I prefer to be second in everything!"
He shuddered as if it would be his worst nightmare to be the first son.
Dignified Geneva pulled off her slipper and hurled it at him,
He looked bewildered and rubbed his arms in exaggeration,
"Anyway, I have duty calls! Adios!"
Brad walked out, and his parents looked at him, retreating back helplessly. In fact, they all knew that Brad jokes were an escape from reality. This piece of news had really affected him but they knew that Brad looked up to his older brother and may have been devastated by this. They let him be.
Geneva stood up and walked up to her vanity in an adjacent room. She pulled open a small drawer and brought out a necklace with a dainty trinket on it. She walked up to Ian and handed it to him.
"This is the only thing I have of your dad."
Ian stretched out his hand and took it, quickly masking the feel of raw power that surged through him on contact.
’What is this?!’ He wondered and turned it around in his hand.
"Are you sure that you want to give this to me? I don’t even know the man .... And this..."
Ian gestured at Alex, ".... This old man here, has done a good job of raising me. So, he is and will forever be my father in my eyes."
Alex lowered his head and tried to stop the tears that threatened to fall. He cleared his throat awkwardly.
’He never returned and went back on his promise, I don’t see why I should keep this. Alex has been tolerable of this for too long.’
She thought and Ian raised an eyebrow as he peeked at his mother’s thoughts. Ian tossed the necklace around, but the brief power surge did not come back. This re-enforced his thoughts that Roman never jilted Geneva. He had really had the mind to come back.
"Thank you for sharing that with me, .... And for raising me as your own."
Ian added and stood up swiftly, exiting the room without a backward glance.
Alex opened his arms and hugs his wife tightly,
They just held each other for a while and then Geneva added,
"I need to bring Shelby and Suzie up to speed so that they can take over from me." She conveniently never mentioned Katie. Geneva did not want to face that heart ache yet.
Currey led Katie along the corridors and then out of the house. The bewildered workers saw their master pack her bags as she was escorted out of the house and into a waiting car outside. Hushed whispers went on around, but no one had the guts to ask. Katie had never taken a vacation, and it was even ridiculous that she had clothes; she always wore the same thing!
Currey personally drove the car out of the estate and parked it near a hiking trail after hours of driving out of civilization. That place was out of all prying eyes but would be routinely frequented by hikers.
He turned to look at Katie and asked,
"What is your purpose for this?"
Katie remained quiet, but her thoughts ran wild: ’ What does he want to do? Ian is too dangerous, and so is this assistant. I must be careful!’
Her face gave nothing away.
Currey listened in and then asked his next question,
"What is their purpose in doing this?"
’I really cannot let him know that the Thornston larger family is looking for an avenue to get the inheritance lineage changed! I don’t know what to say, but they would kill me off if they knew that my cover was broken.
Why did Geneva have to have that big of a secret? The one man that the whole enterprise relies on is not their blood. I must find a way to get out of this mess. Sadly, I know Geneva enough to understand that she will never let me back in.... But - ’
"Thank you for answering my questions."
Currey added after asking a few more questions and listening to Katie’s thoughts on the answers. He was calm with her and asked the same questions in different ways until he confirmed what he wanted.
’What is with this assistant?’
Katie frowned just as she met Currey’s surprisingly bright eyes. She had thought that she would be tortured but even though she had not said a word, the man thanked her? What a freak! Then he said the most bizarre thing ever!
"This conversation never happened, you were never in the mansion today, you don’t know who you are, and you have no idea who the Thornstons are.... "
Katie stared deep into Currey’s eyes as he talked what she thought was nonsense until her eyes dropped, and then she slumped back in the back seat.
Currey stepped out of the car and took Katie out and tossed her down a small hill.
He stood looking at her indifferently. He waited until he heard voices approaching, indicating that people were on the trail, and then turned and left.
Back at the estate and later in the evening, Geneva assembled all the workers,
"Katie has decided to leave her service as of today for personal reasons...."
An uproar went around. Some were happy that the stern demon had left, and others were unsure of what that meant.
"Suzie will take over all the tasks that Katie has been overseeing till now...."
A few exclamations went around, and Suzie stood straight.
