Chapter 264: Chapter 264

Detective Leon was the best at his job; at least, that is what he liked to tell himself. For starters, getting another job that involved the Thornston family had him unsettled but because his bosses’ view of him skyrocketed after James’ arrest, he was nominated the best candidate for this job.

Only Leon knew the truth about the blunder he had caused on his first visit to the Thornston estate. With little choice left in this, he had no option but to tug along. However, despite all the pep talk he had given himself on the way to the hospital, he still found himself second-guessing why they seemed to have been rushed out of the room.

It was great for Leon that he had not seen that devilish beauty, but his curiosity was still at an all-time high, and he couldn’t help but look back a few times as they were ushered out.

After assistant Currey left him and his partner in the elevators and returned, Leon stood staring at Currey’s back for a while, still deep in his thoughts. He sighed and then entered the elevators with his partner, but just before the doors closed, Leon jumped out of the elevator,

"Go ahead, I’ll be right back," he said, and without waiting, he left the other detective just as the door closed.

Leon walked briskly back to the room that he had just left, still questioning his sanity as he did this. The people he was going back to were too powerful and did not like to be second-guessed but Leon could not help himself.

Call it a honed instinct of a sort, Leon felt that he needed to be there. Never did he know that the repercussions of his actions would be something that he would never even know.

Leon went through the list of excuses that he felt he should bring up to them when he got there.

’Leon, have you forgotten what happened the last time you went against them?’

’This time is different! I am helping them... I just want to do my best!’ These were his internal conversations until he reached the door. Just as he was about to knock, he heard Brad’s question through the small gap in the door. Leon stopped and positioned himself so that he could partially see the TV’s screen from that gap.

’So, they did not want me to know? What was the end game? Do they want the police’s help or not? I don’t know and understand how these rich minds think. It just so unordinary!’

Leon thought to himself as he pushed the door open, coming to a quick realization. This was just as Currey paused the rolling video,

"So, I presume that you all know this person?"

His voice sounded hurt, as if a whole truth had been withheld from him.

Alex turned to the detective and asked, "I remember that you were ushered out, detective.... What are you doing back here, and why do you question us on this?"

Leon stared agape, thinking. ’I thought that I was only trying to help. Why am I being attacked?’

"Do you need something else, Detective Leon?" Currey stood up calmly and then asked him politely. It was as if Currey was giving him a verbal tour of their premises and not lowkey questioning him. Leon was the only one to see the problem, for it looked like every single person in the room did not.

"You do not need to worry about this. We will leave this for Chairman Ian to decide on as she is family. Is that-"

"Wait! You withheld this because of ...."

"The Chairman will handle this! Please help us with the other’s suspect, and we will bring this to your desk in no time but AFTER the chairman has made his decision."

Leon’s mouth dropped open. He could see Currey smiling, but he got goosebumps just from seeing that smile. It was creepy as hell.

"I- I-" Leon stumbled back as if he had seen something that he should not have.

Leon cleared his throat, deciding to hold firm in his thoughts.

’The chairman was not there so it should be okay. Even Chairman Ian would be happy that I helped apprehend the culprit!’

The fact that Currey was scaring him with his seemingly polite actions was just beside the point.

Leon turned to Alex and Geneva.

"I’m sorry if I a overstepping my bounds, Mr. and Mrs. Thornston, but wouldn’t the Chairman like it for us to apprehend this person who was likely to have committed this crime? I mean-"

"So, you do know that you are overstepping your bounds?"

"I’m sorry, madam, but I am only trying to help. I am not the bad person here. I-"

"Help? Huh? You do know that help should be welcomed and appreciated, right? Imposing ’help’ will never be appreciated by anyone, so see yourself out the same way that you came in."

Detective Leon was baffled. The conversation felt like he was the villain when his job was to investigate what could have possibly happened to the Thornston family’s only daughter-in-law.

Leon knew his limits and the hostility and tension emanating from the room was too much for him to bear. It felt as if an immense pressure had been placed on his shoulders.

He held the door tightly, mumbled a ’sorry’, and then left without looking back but at the same time, Leon vowed to have answers for Chairman Ian by the time he was well enough to speak to him. Leon was not clear on what the problem with Ian was as the incident only involved his wife.

Even as he pledged this to himself, Leon’s heart raced so badly that he did not understand what was making him feel that way. However, the one single memory that ironically kept him company was Currey’s eyes and smile. It was just off and weird to a creepy point. His instincts were telling him to get out of there, and Leon did just that.

Leon placed his hands over his rapidly beating heart and willed it to calm down as he waited for the elevators.

’Am I overstepping my bounds?’ Leon asked himself as another gentleman got on the elevator. He had just stepped in. Leon found no problem or anything odd at all and rode down to the ground floor.

When Leon finally got to the parking lot, he found his co-detective in their unmarked vehicle with the engine running.

"So, what did you go up there to do?" The man snapped impatiently. Making Leon raise an eyebrow.

"Someone is getting touchy!" However, after saying this, Leon frowned as if he had just comprehended the question he had been asked.

"Huh? Up there? What do you mean by that? Do I have to report my every personal move to you?"

"What do you mean personal? You let me wait here just so you could attend to a personal issue? What the fuck, man? While we are on the clock? That is so messed up on different levels!"

Leon frowned, wondering why his partner was making mountains out of molehills. The man asked,

"Didn’t you return because you had to check on something? I thought it had something to do with the case and you had me waiting here like a dummy!"

It took a while before Leon pieced two and two together. His mind was a little foggy and he was struggling to form words. It only took a few seconds to a minute before Leon felt like he could function like himself.

"Me?" Leon was confused and looked at his friend as if he was nuts. "What are you babbling about?"

Leon’s partner turned to look at him fully.

’Did being around these powerful people mess with Leon’s head? He is usually a rational person, but it almost seems as if I am looking at someone whose head is screwed on wrong!’ The man was unsure why he thought so but the two minutes that Leon had spent in the car with him just felt odd.

All the actions and reactions did not feel like Leon’s. Even after long shifts and stakeouts, Leon was the only person out of them that could still function like a human so he could not really pinpoint why he thought so. ’Whatever,’ he thought but still could not help but ask.

"Are you sure everything is, okay?"

"Chill!!! I just went to the washroom. What are you talking about? Has it been a long day for you? Just drive! We have work to do. Assistant Currey just sent a file to me so that we can have a head start but retrieving the image and running it through the database...."

The detective examined Leon for a while, still wondering what was off about him. After a while, he concluded that everything was okay with Leon. He shifted the car into drive, and they went their way.

If Leon was more aware of himself, he may have realized that his actions were a bit similar to the workers he had interviewed back at the Thornston estate when Ian had first been accused of murder by James.

After the car had left, Murray ’appeared’ in that spot and then shook his head, ’Too much curiosity will get you into trouble.’

Then Murray mind-linked Currey, ’It’s been handled, bro.’
