"Hey, Rocky! Wait up!"

Even after hearing this, Rocky did not ease up his pace. His long strides, eating up the space even as he walked unhurriedly along the hallway of the T-Vino Island medical school, seemingly lost in his thoughts. It had been just about a week since he had resumed his classes after taking a small break from school. The puzzling reaction from his Principal was still fresh in his mind, though, as he could feel the subtle difference in the treatment he then received from his tutors and professors.

’It’s been an overwhelming few weeks!’ Rocky thought with a sigh. In essence, that was just an understatement. Rocky was already mature for his age, but the few incidents that had changed his home overnight, pushed him even more up the maturity threshold.

Rocky had gone from a schoolboy getting an allowance from his dad to the person who shouldered the financial burden of his home; not that he had to earn that money, but being responsible for that much money could be a whole burden on its own!

He ran his hands through his hair, picked out his scrubs and comfortable shoes, and headed to the male locker room to change.

"Hey! Are you dead or something? Why won’t you mind me?"

Rocky took a side glance at the person and then turned inward back to his thoughts.

He pulled out his phone and checked the messages again.

"Leave him, Nicholas! When Rocky is like that, it can only be one of two things...."

"I know, I know.... It’s an issue with his sister or ...."

"His crush!" The two friends shouted in unison.

"Your dad would be sad to see you . You are not mourning his death but stuck up on a girl?"

"How did you conclude that it’s his crush and not the sister?" the other friend, Matt, asked.

"Just use your head, Matt! Would Sister Shelby have any problems being married to Ian Thornston? No!" Nicholas answered his own question and then added, "That would never happen, so this long face and sigh could only be due to Sister Ava! Remind me not to fall in love with an older woman!"

"What do you mean, older woman? Have you seen .... I mean, have you really seen sister Ava recently? Damn! I wouldn’t mind tap-" Nicholas clamped his mouth shut when Rocky glared at him.

"So, you were listening, just not minding us! That hurts, man!"

Nicholas held his chest and feigned a pained expression. It only lasted a few seconds, though. He jumped up and draped his arms over Matt and Rocky’s shoulders.

"I’m glad to have you back, man! This place was too downy without your presence. I missed you!"

Rocky and Matt threw Nicholas’ arms off them and moved back a few paces. By some unspoken agreement, the two friends never talked about Clara, as if she did not exist. Even if Prosecutor Presque was jailed, it did not erase the fact that the two had seen their friend’s mother being fucked in different positions like a professional. Those images would forever be ingrained in their heads.

’Why is Ava ghosting me? What did I do again?’ Rocky asked himself as he checked his phone again. It was as if checking the phone regularly would magically make a message appear. Ava had also stopped answering his calls, and no matter the number of messages Rocky sent, he never got a reply.

The last message he had received was what had been troubling him, but he could also not get the chance to see her. Ava had totally shut him out!

’Is it because I turned down her offer to go to her place that day when I saw the news of Dad’s demise?’ Rocky had asked himself this a thousand times but always turned up with a ’Naaa ..... that’s impossible. My Ava is not that petty!’

The last message Ava sent him read, ’Rocky, you need to be with your peers. There are many prettier and younger girls out there. Find someone with a better background who is more suitable for you. Don’t be stuck with a cougar like me. Your crush is only a passing phase. I appreciate the fact that you had a place in your heart, but try your best to get that off your mind. I am not worth that much!’

He wanted to say, ’You? A cougar?’ But he could not bring himself to say anything. He was sad at the way Ava put herself down as she was nothing but to Rocky, Ava was his everything!

Rocky knew he needed to see Ava in person to try to talk to her, but all his efforts had proven futile. He also had a lot to do to catch up on his studies, so he was stuck... in a way.

’I have already settled Marvin’s issue, but she still won’t talk to me. What can I do? Should I ask sissy to set up a meeting? Naaaa... that would be weird. Ava - ... I have to do that myself. But how?’ Rocky contemplated, running different scenarios in his mind. He knew there was no chance he would let Ava slip through his hands, but with each passing second, he was getting more frantic.

"Look at him! He is back on that again. Do you know what happened with between him and sister Ava?" Matt shrugged.

Just then, a beautiful, female medical student blocked that path.

"Rocky, can I talk to you for a moment?"

A whole hallway hushed up. All this time, people had been casting subtle glances at the trio and hush-whispering among themselves. Despite all the scandals that had marred his family, Rocky was still one of the most sought-after males in the school. However, Rocky had never given any girl the time of the day except for his core circle, which was made up of only males.

It was not so much of a girl stopping Rocky to talk to him but the person’s identity. This was the school belle. The one girl whom every guy wanted to look their way. The one who made almost all the females jealous and clamouring to be her friend. It was none other than Terry, the Principal’s daughter!

Matt and Nicholas let out an ’oooooh!’ sound.

"Terry?" Rocky stopped, raising his brow in askance.

"What is it?" Rocky asked, his voice a bit snappier than he would have liked. He was irritated big time, and the last thing he needed was anyone interrupting his thoughts, even if that person was the Principal’s daughter.

Terry pursed her lips. She had a mission to complete. A few days ago, her daddy had called her and said a few words to her. Terri did not normally see eye-to-eye with her father, but for this task, she was more than willing to do it. She eagerly waited for Rocky at that place as her father encouraged her to pursue him.

He had said, ’Terry dear, If you hook up with him, our family will become the best of the best with his brother-in-law’s backing! Imagine getting Ian Thornston as your brother-in-law?’

Terry did not need to imagine. That had been her dream from day one since Rocky had stepped foot in the school and she had laid her eyes on him. The thing was, Rocky never spared her a glance, but now, with her daddy’s blessings and encouragement, Terry would do all she could to pursue him.

"I-" Terry hesitated, questioning herself.

"Can I speak to you alone?" She batted her lashes discretely and tried her best not to fidget under his scrutinizing gaze.

"You can say whatever you want to say here," Rocky stated.

Rocky sidestepped her and pushed the male locker room door open. He entered without sparing her a glance.

Terry stared at his back in shock, whispering, "Did Rocky just snub me?!"

Matt and Nicholas looked at her in pity, shaking their heads.

The two had known Rocky since middle school, and they knew for a fact that for Rocky, it had always been Ava and no one else. The two had seen the different tactics of many girls over time, but Rocky never looked twice at any woman who was not his sister or his crush. Terry was just one of them and would never be the one.

It did not matter if the person was the richest or had a more prettier look. Anyway, with Shelby’s looks, no one could ever surpass that, so that was not even an issue worth considering. Both men sighed at the same time.

"We’re going to the festival, right?" Matt asked.

"Of course! It’s the biggest event on the island; why would we not go? I-"

The door closed behind them, and Terry did not hear anything else, which made her slummed mood perk up again.

"What are you looking at!" Terry snapped at the many eyes on her.

She stormed through the hallway to her first lesson of the day.

"Just look at her! Openly chasing him now that he is rumoured to be richer!"

"Shhhh! Do you want to become her enemy?"

"But it’s true that Rocky just came into some big money, so all the girls are falling on themselves to pursue him. Tell me, has the queen ever openly pursued him ? If there was no benefit, would she?"
