Chapter 157: Chapter 157

"You should let me know before you go out like that!" A voice reprimanded.

Ava stumbled back instinctively as she had been startled out of her thoughts. Rocky, who had been behind her, also reached out automatically to steady her.

"Thank you," Ava whispered to him and then turned back to Geneva, who had spoken to her out of the blue.

"I- I’m sorry, ma’am, I-"

Geneva narrowed her eyes at Ava, making her quickly change the way she addressed her,

Geneva nodded as Ava added, "It was a bit of an emergency, but it will never happen again!"

Geneva nodded again, this time, a mischievous twinkle glinting in her eyes as she took in Rocky’s stance behind Ava. Geneva’s eyes spoke volumes.

"You don’t need to be so uptight about this! At least you had the mind not to keep me from my favourite snacks. I knew I liked you from the first day I saw you!"

Ava lowered her head, and Rocky chose that moment to rub her shoulders fondly with one hand. She was getting used to his random touches and had not even noticed this, but that did not mean that Geneva and the rest did not notice.

"Young love! It’s so beautiful when it starts right!" Geneva had not made any efforts to lower her voice, and with her eyes glued to them, all other eyes turned to them. Ava squirmed, and her face warmed up. She clenched her hands tightly, resisting the urge to bring her hands up to her face to feel that warmth.

It was in moments like those that she appreciated the colour of her skin. The ebony skin allowed her to hide her embarrassment and blushes, for no one would see any colour change on her face. She lowered her head as Rocky giggled. He was beyond happy.

Ava was saved from any further ’embarrassment’ as that was when Ian walked out with Shelby.

The nurses continued gossiping long after Ian had strode out of the place with his wife.

"Sigh! What would it take for my man to carry me out as gallantly as that?!" One asked, and the rest fell into a fit of laughter. Nonetheless, it was a question that resonated so well with them.

Ava took the chance to kind of blend in the background as she threw a glare at Rocky. For Rocky, he couldn’t be happier. However, most of this came from the assurance that Ava was taking the incident from earlier a little better than he thought she would.

’That’s my strong girl!’ He thought to himself but made a mental note to keep checking on her for her mental state’s sake.

As Rocky did this, he kept one ear of the conversation. He had come there to see his sister and also talk to his brother-in-law about the unusual funds he had received, but Rocky knew that the timing was wrong.

"I have to go, Ava. I’ll call my brother-in-law later, as well as sis too. For now, I have a few things to take care of." Rocky said a bit reluctantly.

Ava turned to him, her eyes lowering to conceal the complicated glint in them.

"Thank you for earlier."

"I should be the one thanking you for granting me a listening ear."

Rocky did not push but added, "Take care, Ava. See you soon, and please, stay aw-"

Rocky stopped himself from continuing, knowing very well that it was not his place to talk about Marvin or Josh.

The thought of Josh made his emotions turbulent, but he showed none of that. He bid farewell to Alex and Geneva and was gone. Ava only stared briefly at his retreating back and looked away.

On the side, the older couple listened to Currey’s explanation, not even knowing what to say to counter that. It sounded logical, yet at the same time, it did not.

Alex and Geneva were the next to leave, with Katie following at a respectable distance.

"What is wrong with that boy? Even if Shelby’s wounds are superficial, she should still stay in the hospital to fully recuperate! Our daughter-in-law was out unconscious for several hours, and he just carried her off as soon as she awoke?"

Geneva kept muttering under her breath as she walked out of the hallway and into the waiting elevators.

Curry remained slightly bowed, thanking his stars that Geneva had let go. Geneva was impossible to deal with when she was dissatisfied with something; however, with her son, she usually had no way of venting.

Suzie had also been hovering around, especially when she saw the door open and Ian come out. She cleaned the remnant tears and then hurriedly carried the sleeping Gabriel, beckoning to Ingrid, they also followed the couple out.

The sole thought in Suzie’s mind then was, "I have to go with Miss the next time so that such accidents do not happen again. The only day that I do not go out with her, and this happens!" She reprimanded herself, adding, "Next time, I have to insist on going with Miss Shelby."

Ingrid looked up at her with eyes that almost asked, ’What could you have done?’ Nevertheless, like Ingrid, if such words did go through her small, pretty head, they all stayed there and never saw the light of day.

Currey straightened after they had all left the VVIP ward and into the elevator.

The nurse-in-charge and the doctor stared blankly at the closed elevator, wondering what the hell had happened.

There was a nagging feeling that everything had gone contrary to what they had wanted, but even more surprising was that, in their minds, nothing was wrong. However, both of them could not shake off the peculiar feeling as if something was amiss. Fearing that they might be labelled with paranoia, they did not bring up their sentiments to each other.

Currey finished up the discharge procedures and was about to leave when he noticed the nurse.

Not surprisingly, the nurse-in-charge stared fixated at one point in the corridor.

"What are you looking at?" The doctor asked.

"Huh?" She turned to him and said, "Never mind, it’s nothing!"

She did not want to sound crazy, but she could have sworn that she had seen a strangely dressed man with an X-ray file in his hand in the middle of the corridor.

"I probably need more sleep. It’s been a tiring day."

She turned, rubbing her eyes. She would have been so surprised if she knew what her eyes conveyed to her was very accurate.

"Why did we discharge Mrs Thornston again?" The doctor asked spontaneously.

The nurse-in-charge shook her head and smiled, "I think you need rest more than I do. Why would you ask me when you discharged a perfectly healthy patient lol."

The dissonance in their mind settled so that they then felt that they had willingly discharged Shelby because there were not many wounds, and they felt proud of themselves. All strangeness was already forgotten.

One of the cloaked figures watched this, getting intrigued by the second. An eerie chuckle sounded as the person shook their head.

Currey walked out, followed closely by Murray, who looked to be slightly weaker as he could barely hold himself up. One arm was held far away from him making it look weird.

Even though Shelby had not been fatally hurt, she had still been hurt nonetheless, and someone had to pay. Also, even though Ian had restrained himself from killing off Murray for putting his Elfin in danger, it did not mean that he had not put Murray under some sort of punishment.

Yes, the more significant threat was out there, but Ian needed Murray and Currey to know one fact: ’His Elfin triumphed over all! Mistakes would not be tolerated in any way when it came to her safety!’

What Ian had done was put a pure iron bracelet on Murray. Iron was one of the prime things in the world that negatively affected Faes. It was like their main weakness among others. It was such that iron in its pure form could kill some younger and weaker Faes.

It was said that iron bent their energies, like having our human essence, i.e. blood, contracted or burst out into an abnormality that would kill us. For the Faes, iron could drain out their vitality and life’s essence as well.

This was why Murray could not maintain his form and had been briefly seen by the nurse. For Ian, iron was only a nuisance for him. He most certainly did not like it as it made him uncomfortable but not to the point as the full-blooded Faes were.

"Are you sure that you can handle this, brother?"

Murray gritted his teeth, "It is the price I must pay for my negligence!"

"Okay, hang on for a bit. He will let you off soon enough..." Currey said but crossed his fingers, knowing that Murray was on a ticking time bomb. If there was one thing that Currey knew, it was the fact that Murray was strong and determined.

With his level, it would take the iron about a couple of days before it dealt off with him. However, the way he was weakening rapidly told him just how strong and pure the iron was.

"How did we get here?" Shelby’s surprised voice echoed in Ian’s room. When she had raised her face off his chest, they were in his room. She had only felt a whoosh of wind and nothing else.

Ian lay her down on the bed gently and pecked her lips.

"...but I just woke up,"

Shelby smiled at him and closed her eyes obediently, falling off to sleep instantaneously, even surprising herself. Ian sat down by her on his bed with a slightly surprised frown. His hands slightly passed over Shelby’s cheeks. None of the bruises were visible anymore. There was no evidence anywhere on her that showed what she had suffered!
