Chapter 131: Chapter 131
Geneva remained quiet for quite a while, and Abi was patient, with her grin widening with each passing second. "So, before we get into the nitty gritty details, Who is your daughter?"
Abi clapped her hands and brought out another file almost instantly. That reply was more than what she thought. One leg was already in the Thornston household. The file had a clear and crisp picture of Briana. Her daughter was very beautiful, nonetheless.
Abi handed the profile, which almost looked like a CV, to Geneva.
Geneva flipped the file to look at the summary of her personal details:
Place of birth & Home: T-Vino Island and lives in the Mush estate
Parents: Abram and Abi Mush
Education: BA in Management and Administration with a minor in Winemaking.
Occupation: Unemployed but understudying my parents
Description: I am a hearty girl who is not picky about what I eat. I am cheerful and bring fun to all those around me. I am a native of T-Vino Island and have been raised to understand the traditional values of our humble Island. I can bring in both personal and professional contributions if I am selected.
As Geneva quickly skimmed through it, she found her mind drifting back. The proposal, especially, made Geneva start to think back to when she had felt that she had had enough of Ian and the way he kept himself locked up. Coupled with that, the bride’s profile was one she remembered vividly back then. It had already been a few months back when she had made the decision to look for a wife for her son.
It had been a spontaneous decision. She woke up one day and just said this while they were having breakfast:
"I’ll start to look for a girl with a good background for Ian to marry. He needs motivation to come out of that place he has locked himself in."
Alex swung his head at her in surprise, nearly dropping the steaming mug of coffee he had in his hand.
Brad, also had a similar reaction as his dad, and then he had looked at her and said,
"While you’re at it, why don’t you find a girl whose looks alone can kill a man? If not, you can never get rid of that demon in his head!"
It had only been a casual and overly sarcastic statement from Brad, but it had taken root firmly in her that day.
"Hmmmm...." Geneva scratched her temple, taking a thoughtful stance.
"I never knew you could have a good idea in that empty head of yours?!"
"Ma! Don’t call me an empty head- ...wait! WHAT?!!"
He had looked directly at his mother across the table in disbelief.
"You know that I was being sarcastic, right?"
"Am I not the person who carried you and gave birth to you? Why wouldn’t I know what my son means?"
"... Then why are you going along with my useless words, Mum?"
"Hahahhaa.... Even you know when you use useless words? I never knew a day would come!"
Alex let the words fly all around him, but in a way, he was also very interested in his wife’s idea. However, Alex knew that if Geneva needed him, she would let him know. He continued his breakfast and enjoyed the bickering of his family around them. He felt very content. Most of the time, Alex liked to pretend that he only had those three children from Aliya visiting and did not even bother if they were around them at mealtimes.
’If Ian wants them looked after, he should come out to do so!’ Were his thoughts.
Brad’s disbelief skyrocketed as he took in how serious his mother was.
"Mum, let me ask you seriously."
"What is it, Brad?" Geneva also asked with all seriousness, giving him her undivided attention.
"Why do you think another woman will be what will help Ian .... And most importantly, why not me?"
Geneva dropped her arms in resignation. For once, she had actually taken Brad all serious with his words until he had added the last part. So, instead of answering the question, Geneva rather asked,
"Are you ready to get married? I can get you married as early as next week or even tomorrow, depending on how fast you want it!"
All the blood drained from Brad, and he scrambled from his seat, disappearing as fast as his legs could carry him while his parent’s laughter echoed behind him that morning.
In the days following that, Geneva had tasked Katie with getting the profiles of almost all the girls from their circles.
Briana Mush’s profile was one of the ones she had seen from the start. The Mush’s were one of the families closer to theirs in terms of social standing, and Geneva would have wanted nothing but to pair up with them, but Briana Mush’s profile had been one of the first ones to be discarded.
Her pretty face had caught Geneva’s attention, but then the words under her profile had been so artificial that Geneva couldn’t help but scoff at it.
"Why are you discarding this?" Katie couldn’t help but ask that day.
"She has nice hips conducive for childbirth, and also, she looks beautiful enough to pass on good genes, but I don’t like her forehead."
"Forehead?" Katie asked, perplexed.
Geneva smiled and replied, "I can’t pinpoint it. She’s just not the one!"
Katie really could not understand but let the issue go. For the few days following that. They had gone through all of the females that Geneva felt were worthy but Geneva had rejected all of them with mundane excuses like,
"Her eyes show how much of a liar she will be."
"She looks too feisty."
"I just don’t like her."
Katie had ceased to be surprised at that point. However, when Geneva asked her for more profiles after about three weeks of this, she had to deliver the sad news: "That’s the last of it, Geneva."
"What?! What will my Ian do then? How will he get a bride?"
Then Brad showed up once again. He had been lurking around and trying to figure out who the final person selected would be like.
"Mum, admit it! You are probably looking for an angel for him right?"
"Shut your mouth and leave!" Geneva screamed throwing a small throw-pillow at him.
Then, in came Brad again. "If you are so obsessed with wide hips and childbirth, then all you need is someone who will give birth so what’s with all this scrutiny?"
"You don’t understand... she has-"
"If all you want is this then go to the Bride Catalogue then. Aren’t the people there meant for that?" Brad causally said once again and left wondering why he was even given these prompts to his mother. It was just that, he kept hearing his little inner voice being very active about those things. After saying that, his mind calmed down enough for him to think straight.
However, unknowingly, his mother had taken that slight comment very seriously yet again.
The next day, Geneva had one of the main managers of the Catalogue visit her home with the bridal options that they had.
Katie had tried to deter her because brides from there were not worthy of their family, but Geneva had been adamant.
"If you’re worried about the estate, we can just make the person sign a contract so that we can control that person."
That had been what had made Katie relent. It was not like she could do anything even if Geneva had pushed through like that.
The older woman had happily flipped through the list of bridal profiles in the catalogue until her eyes fell on Shelby, and she froze. It was as if the bride was calling out to her. The girl was insanely beautiful.
Unlike anyone that Geneva had met in her life, well not quite; however, even Geneva, as a woman, could not tear her eyes from the picture of the beautiful blue-eyed blond. Geneva could think of all the words that describe that young woman that day: beautiful, gorgeous, stunning, lovely, picturesque.
That day, she learned of the young woman’s background from the manager and also of the fact that she had been enrolled in the catalogue for barely a few days.
Despite the red flags after meeting her step-father and other nitty-gritty details that were undesirable in her family, Geneva insisted on pushing and they had a contract drawn up within a few days after.
Back at the restaurant, she finished her skimming and scoffed at the blatant lies on Briana Mush’s file. She may have rejected Briana Mush with a flimsy excuse back then, but now she had a bit of knowledge about the girl and did not like her one bit. Traditional? With inviting herself into her home? Etiquette and respect?
No matter how much Geneva looked at it, the girl did not qualify, but that did not mean that the offer was not tempting enough.
’If I accept the deal, we can have the port access today and that can even help the crises that Alex talked about. This is a really good opportunity that I cannot pass over such a good opportunity but then -’ Geneva appeared really conflicted at that time. Finally, she came to a decision. She looked Abi square in the face and then began, "I-"
