Chapter 121: Chapter 121

Lily Green heard Jacob Green say something just as she arrived at the door, and her eyelid twitched as she stepped inside, "Is it really her?"

Jacob Green’s expression softened a bit as he said to Lily Green, "Of course."

"Little Jacob, you’re really something else," Lily Green smiled, "I saw the morning paper today. It says that last night, the Prime Minister’s daughter, Lucy, single-handedly fought off eight thugs to prevent the tragedy at the First People’s Hospital from escalating. Mom and Dad, did you see it?"

"I did see it, but there were no photos." Mother Green was very surprised, "I even praised her this morning, saying that the Prime Minister’s daughter’s skills are really good. I never thought she’d be my daughter-in-law."

At this point, Mother Green was beaming, showing her satisfaction with this daughter-in-law whom she’d never met.

"Isn’t your girlfriend from the countryside?" Grandma Green snorted.

"She did grow up in the countryside, but that’s because she was swapped by her adoptive parents at birth."

"Your mom and I know about this; we saw it on the news," Father Green chimed in.

"I’d like to express my attitude and stance here. When I registered with her, neither of us knew she would turn out to be the Prime Minister’s biological daughter. So even if she were not the Prime Minister’s daughter, it’s not a reason for Grandma to have any prejudice against her. Grandma, you always talk about family background, but don’t you know your own family wasn’t that prominent either?" Jacob Green looked at Grandma Green’s darkening face with a smile, "Why make things difficult for another woman? Since Grandma raised the issue, Grandma should also give an answer to the Presidential Mansion. Tomorrow morning, I will bring Lucy to meet you all, and as for John’s request for the household registration booklet, no one is allowed to obstruct it."

"I’ll go get it for your brother," Mother Green hurried back to the room to get the booklet.

Watching Jacob Green leave, Grandma Green gritted her teeth and said, "That Little Jacob, deliberately exasperating me!"

Lily Green felt quite delighted inside, happily asking, "Grandma, how is this deliberately exasperating you? Little Jacob was clearly reasonable and rational."

"Old woman, don’t wait until tomorrow. Call the Presidential Mansion now to relay the consideration outcome," Grandpa Green urged.

"What’s the hurry," Grandma Green grumbled, but still complied.

After hanging up the phone, she worriedly said, "Although the Prime Minister’s daughter matches our social standing, she is still not as noble as the President’s daughter. Moreover, the President and First Lady came to our house today with sincerity to personally arrange their daughter’s marriage. Our refusal might very well be interpreted differently in their eyes, perhaps seen as us not respecting them. I reckon the Presidential Mansion might want to teach us a lesson."

"While what Mom said makes sense, our family hasn’t acted unjustly. Matters of marriage should be mutually agreeable. We can’t comply just because of the other party’s status," Father Green considered, "Moreover, though the President’s daughter has a higher status than the Prime Minister’s daughter, speaking of individuals, it’s hard to say."

"Exactly, although I haven’t met the daughter-in-law, I believe any woman capable of marrying my son directly must have something outstanding," Mother Green handed the household registration booklet to John Green, "After registering the marriage tomorrow morning, we should bring her home and have a family reunion lunch."

John Green nodded, "Okay."

"Now that our family has declined the Bennetts, they will surely set their sights on someone else. I wonder who they’ll choose next," Grandma Green sighed, "It’s our family that lacks such fortune."

John Green heard her say this, uttered no response, and turned to leave.

Lucy listened to Jacob Green’s words, feeling both amused and exasperated, "I must say, your grandma really does have quite the reach. She used to keep Big Brother and Mia apart, and now she wants to do it all over again. She must think herself as the Empress Dowager."

"Who says so," Jacob Green squeezed her hand, "Wife, I’m taking you home tomorrow. You’ll come, won’t you?"

Seeing his uncertain little gaze, Lucy nodded with a smile, "You’ve laid it all out there; how could the ’ugly daughter-in-law’ refuse to see her in-laws?"

"You’re not an ’ugly daughter-in-law’; you’re my ’beautiful daughter-in-law’. Tomorrow, dress beautifully and properly open Grandma’s eyes."

"I have no interest in pleasing her," Lucy stated straightforwardly, "I don’t like your grandma, so let me be frank: if she tries to lecture me as an elder or says things I don’t like to hear, I might snap back."

"Do as you please; just say I authorized it."

"I never thought," Lucy looked at him steadily, "the President and First Lady would personally arrange their daughter’s marriage. They ought to have their secretary invite you to Northriver, right? Does that show enough sincerity? Or do they spoil their youngest daughter too much? I don’t see it. Both sons aren’t married yet, and they are eager to set their daughter’s marriage? They are the most privileged in Country Y; are they afraid that outstanding men will marry early, so they want to settle it in advance? This seems contradictory, because frankly speaking, there are few young entrepreneurs of your status, but doctors like Big Brother are not uncommon, right? Most importantly, you’re from the Green Family, so viewing externally yet understanding internally, I think the Presidential Mansion is likely having internal issues, and the President needs a marriage alliance to stabilize his position, preferably with a prominent family, like yours—young and promising entrepreneurs, or if not, significant status but crucial within Country Y." After saying all that, the smile in Jacob Green’s eyes deepened, "You see through it."

"Within large families and privileged households, interests are always the first priority."

Thinking that tomorrow Mia would become her sister-in-law, Lucy couldn’t help but feel happy for her, "Tomorrow morning, Mia and Big Brother will get their marriage certificate, and they’re sure to have a wedding soon. I must give Mia a proper leave to let her prepare well."

"Have you thought about our wedding?" he reminded her, "We’ll have ours in the future too."

"I’ll think about it carefully when the time comes; for now, no thoughts."

"I can’t wait to see you on that day, my bride," he spoke with tender affection at the corners of his mouth.

Lucy leaned in close to his ear, whispered, "It’ll happen."

The two of them had slept so long during the day that they weren’t sleepy at night, watching movies until midnight before embracing each other and going to sleep.

A little after five o’clock, Jacob Green woke from his dream, finding that somehow they had each ended up sleeping separately. He pulled her back into his arms, like holding a precious treasure, unwilling to loosen his grip even a little.

This embrace woke Lucy up.
