Chapter 478: Chapter 478
As they were having breakfast, Liu Zhiyuan hurried back home, and now no one in the family could manage to eat any more. Mr. Liu didn’t say much, gave his wife a look, and went straight to the company. Wu Mengyi didn’t want to see Ye Qian, got up, and returned to the bedroom, leaving Ye Qian alone sitting in the kitchen.
Ye Qian cleaned up the kitchen, served a bowl of porridge, prepared some side dishes, and then took them to the bedroom door. She raised her hand to knock, but there was no sound from inside for a long time. So she turned back, went to the sofa, retrieved the bedroom key from under the coffee table, and went over to open the door herself.
Inside the bedroom, Liu Zhiyuan was lying on the bed with his back to the door, so she couldn’t see his expression. But since he hadn’t been back for long, Ye Qian knew he wasn’t asleep. After placing the food on the table, she sat down on the edge of the bed.
"Brother Zhiyuan, I know you’re not feeling well, but seeing you makes your parents feel even worse. Yesterday, they worried about you all day. Now Dad has gone to the company, and Mom has locked herself in the bedroom. I know I’m not good with words, but I’m just thinking, you should at least eat something, you have to face whatever happens." Ye Qian did her best to make her voice sound gentle. ᴜᴘᴅᴀᴛᴇ ꜰʀᴏᴍ Novᴇl_Fire(.)net
Liu Zhiyuan, lying there, didn’t move at all. He wasn’t asleep and was indeed very upset. However, after thinking things through all night, he was able to calm himself down. What he couldn’t get past now was the hurdle in his heart. All his life, he’d never made a mistake, never slipped up, but who could have thought he’d suddenly make such a big mistake.
This kind of mistake, even a minor reprimand would be light. His father had to use his connections; otherwise, if it had been anyone else, there might never be another chance for a promotion. His career in the military would then be at an end.
Though he’d thought it through, Liu Zhiyuan still lacked energy. After coming home, he needed to sort out his emotions, hence why he was hiding in the bedroom.
Hearing Ye Qian’s voice at this moment brought him back to his mistake. If he hadn’t been dwelling on which man Ye Qian was pining for, Shen Bin, he wouldn’t have made such a mistake.
And this woman beside him always thought others couldn’t see through her and continued her fake act of being a gentle, kind, virtuous wife.
Liu Zhiyuan found it ironic, and his words carried a mocking tone: "Yeah, things have happened, but there’s no use thinking about what to do now, you just have to face it."
He even wanted to sit up, turn around, and ask Ye Qian if she was actually happy about what happened to him.
But ultimately, his nature wouldn’t allow Liu Zhiyuan to do such a thing. Just as he’d seen through Ye Qian’s thoughts, yet never brought it up.
Ye Qian knew he was in a bad mood, so when faced with his mocking tone, she didn’t think he was targeting her; instead, she replied tolerantly, "Brother Zhiyuan, I’m sorry, I’m clumsy with words and made you unhappy again."
"Enough." Liu Zhiyuan didn’t want to see her fake demeanor any longer. Angrily, he sat up from the bed and shouted back, "I’m already very annoyed. Can’t you let me have some peace? If there’s nothing else, please leave. Didn’t I tell you to stay at your mom’s to take care of yourself? Why did you come back? Isn’t this family chaotic enough for you? If you truly want the best for me, just stay out of my sight."
Liu Zhiyuan had reached his limit; these were the harshest words he could say. Many times he wanted to outright ask Ye Qian if her heart had always been set on Shen Bin, but he couldn’t bring himself to ask; it was just too difficult.
As soon as he thought of his wife pining for another man, and that this man was her brother-in-law, a wave of nausea washed over him.
His background and education made it impossible for him to accept such a thing, yet he had encountered such a person, and that person was his wife.
He felt he had suffered a great humiliation, and the indignity felt like wearing a green hat; he could only swallow his bitterness, unable to share it with anyone, not knowing who he could confide this grief in.
Toward Ye Qian, he didn’t have the kind of fluttering feeling he did when facing Ye Ling, but he believed that ever since he decided to marry Ye Qian, he had always tried his best to fulfill the role of a good husband. Even after the marriage, he hadn’t thought about Ye Ling or anyone else, just focused on living his own life well.
The courteous distance between them, he thought, was how all couples got along. He even considered whether his indifference, or his focus on his work, had led to his wife’s coldness. He tried to change, but it wasn’t until he discovered she still harbored feelings for another man that he understood that no matter what he did, he and his wife could never have the sweetness others shared.
Ye Qian stood there dumbfounded, incredulous at the sight of Liu Zhiyuan yelling at her. After knowing him all her life, this was the first time she saw him with such an expression or temper.
She was frightened all at once and felt scared.
Ever since her husband suggested she stay at her mother’s to take care of herself, she had a vague fear that perhaps her husband was getting tired of her. She didn’t dare dwell on this feeling, fearing it might be true. But at this moment, she had to admit that a woman’s intuition is sensitive, and her thoughts were confirmed.
She simply couldn’t understand why, when she was obviously a victim too, losing her child because of Zhao Guodong—despite her own underhanded moves, with Zhao Guodong’s actions as cover, in everyone’s eyes, she was a victim. So why did her husband hold such a grudge against her?
Or was there something happening that she didn’t know about?
Having always had control over everything, at that moment, Ye Qian suddenly felt fear, realizing her husband had slipped from her grasp. This inability to control filled her with dread.
While Ye Qian was in a daze, the bedroom door opened, and Wu Mengyi strode in.
She said to Ye Qian in a deep voice, "You go to the living room first, I’ll talk to Zhiyuan."
Clearly, she had heard everything Liu Zhiyuan just said from inside.
Ye Qian nodded blankly, turned, and stepped out of the bedroom, closing the door behind her. In truth, she felt even more humiliated, disliked by her mother-in-law, controlled by the Liu Family, and now being shouted at by her husband. She had no status at all within the Liu Family.
