Chapter 428: Chapter 428
Shen Bin put down his chopsticks, frowned at her, clearly in a bad mood. Although they hadn’t interacted much these days, it was the first time Ye Ling saw Shen Bin lose face in front of Shen Chun, and Shen Chun was obviously scared, not daring to say another word.
"Chun’er, will you listen to me and go work at the hospital when you go back?" Shen Bin asked coldly, without expecting an answer from her, "You know you can’t do it, right? You always say you don’t want to trouble me, but sneaking out now isn’t troubling me? Mom and Dad are looking for you in the compound since they can’t find you. Luckily, I had someone send a message back while I was on the train, so they were relieved. If you keep running around , how can I not look for you everywhere? If you were living well somewhere, that would be different, but without any news from you, who knows how you are?"
"Brother, I’m sorry..."
Shen Bin interrupted her, "You’ve apologized many times, but what you just said shows you haven’t truly realized your mistake, otherwise you wouldn’t say that. It’s decided. Since you can’t promise to behave, I’ll arrange a job for you here first. You’re not young anymore, when there’s someone suitable, you should consider it. You can’t remain unmarried for life."
"Brother, please stop, I’ll listen to you, I’ll stay here and won’t run away anymore." Upon hearing the idea of marriage, Shen Chun immediately started to cry.
Ye Ling had been silently eating beside them, her gaze shifting between the siblings. Watching Shen Chun tremble at the mention of marriage, she couldn’t imagine what had happened to make her this afraid. But Shen Bin wasn’t saying anything, clearly not wanting her to know, and Ye Ling wouldn’t persistently ask.
Because of Shen Chun’s issue, Shen Bin hardly ate breakfast, and as soon as Ye Ling put down her chopsticks, he stood up, "Let’s go."
Clearly, he was waiting for Ye Ling to finish before leaving, with no intention of eating any more himself.
He instructed Shen Chun to clean the table.
Ye Ling nodded at Shen Chun, picked up her hat, and followed Shen Bin out of the house towards the office area. Shen Bin walked ahead with large strides, while Ye Ling bowed her head thinking. Being transferred here, she was only assigned as an intern, which made Ye Ling very dissatisfied. However, as a recent graduate and a woman, she couldn’t be like Zhao Guodong and the others.
Upon reaching the office area, she was directly assigned to a position. The company on the mountain was simple; apart from occasionally checking the soil, there wasn’t much to do. Ye Ling, being the only woman here, was well taken care of.
Shen Bin, being a small leader here, had a lot of work. The couple hardly saw each other when in the mountains. That evening, when it was time to clock out, Ye Ling packed up to head home and cook, returning early. She also inquired about the vegetable plots grown here before heading home.
It was better than before, and compared to the past, Ye Ling found this easier to get along with!
Since they had just arrived and hadn’t planted any vegetables themselves, this year they could eat from the company’s vegetables. Next year, they’d have to plant their own. When Ye Ling got home, she found the place neat and tidy, with the aroma of rice greeting her as soon as she entered. Seeing the rice cooker, she knew Shen Chun had already cooked the rice. Setting down her hat, she picked up a basket, "I’ll go pick some vegetables, and we can eat when your brother comes back."
"Sister-in-law, I’ll go with you. I haven’t got much to do these days, and I can help with the cooking." Shen Chun approached cautiously.
Ye Ling nodded and tucked her hair behind her ear, "Then come with me."
She also asked her what she did all day.
"Sister-in-law Hu came over, brought some cucumbers, said they were from her own family." Shen Chun replied softly.
Ye Ling thought for a moment and recalled the loudest one in the crowd yesterday, called Wang Ping, realizing what kind of person she was. Although they hadn’t interacted much, it was clear she was a gossip.
Ye Ling wasn’t too fond of it. Seeing her bring cucumbers today, she felt the woman had ulterior motives. In the mountains with plenty of vegetable plots, it was hard to believe there were no cucumbers. Obviously, she wanted to use favor as leverage, but wasn’t willing to give anything out. With just this thought, Ye Ling decided to keep her distance in the future.
Seeing no change in her sister-in-law’s expression, Shen Chun continued, "I met Sister-in-law Wu at the water room when fetching water. She said if we run out of grains or something, we could take some from her place, and return it when we go down the mountain to buy more."
"If anyone mentions this again, just say we’ll first use what the mountain provides. Although what your brother and I get each month isn’t enough for a full month, it’s enough for half. When there’s a car going down the mountain in a few days, we can buy more in time," Ye Ling instructed Shen Chun, giving her a thoughtful look before withdrawing her gaze.
Yesterday, when Shen Chun returned home late, she only greeted the others in the household briefly, not saying much. Surprisingly, she remembered everyone clearly, showing she was smart. Ye Ling wondered if Shen Bin knew how clever his sister was.
They passed the residential prefab houses and a small grove, where the view widened into vast vegetable fields. Besides the high-growing vegetables like eggplants and cucumbers, there were freshly sprouted cabbages, the autumn greens just planted, and some soldiers busy working in the fields.
Ye Ling glanced around, identifying the vegetables she needed and leading Shen Chun over, instructing her, "We are a small family, even though the company grows plenty of vegetables, many employees live on the mountain and they also need to prepare for the winter. So, when we pick, just take enough to eat, don’t waste any."
The times were better now, not as tough, but the vegetables they eat in winter are still their own preserved dried vegetables, conditions weren’t great.
Shen Chun listened intently, nodding as she did so, "Don’t worry, sister-in-law, I’ll remember."
The caution was gone from her gestures, encouraging Ye Ling to talk more with her. So as they picked beans, the two didn’t remain silent, chatting about work, upcoming training, and that Shen Bin would be going out, among other things until they’d half filled their basket with beans and headed home.
When they got home, Shen Bin had returned, his clothes full of dust, but looking not the least bit tired. In fact, he seemed happier and more spirited than in recent days. "Chun’er’s got a job now. The company’s recruiting family members for logistics during autumn, given the work with autumn vegetables and drying produce. It’s just for this season. Since our family needs the help and you’ve got work, Chun’er can step in. We’ll figure something else out after autumn ends."
