Chapter 208: Chapter 208
Han Hu hadn’t expected this.
After a silent moment, she said, "I’ve found that my heart is not cruel enough."
"Have you discovered that even family members are just so-so?"
A faint smile touched Fu Bing’s lips. "Family is just like that, don’t be too surprised. Han Cheng and Jian Meixue are also quarreling frequently now and are in no state to manage the company. Shen Xian will swallow Han Cheng’s company whole. If you want it, I can have someone handle it—funnel Han Cheng’s assets back, pass them through several hands, and finally deliver them to you."
"I just want the house where my mother and I used to live. I’m not interested in the rest."
Fu Bing nodded. "I’ll have someone take care of it. Use the New Year period to plan your future well. Whatever consequences those people face, it’s none of your concern anymore. They won’t be in your life in the future."
"Xiaobing, thank you for letting me take revenge with my own hands." Han Hu often woke up in the middle of the night, still not daring to believe she had taken her revenge.
However, revenge hadn’t brought her joy, but panic.
She feared that the families of those people would retaliate against her.
So, this was what it felt like after taking revenge—completely different from what she had imagined.
She still wasn’t suited for these things; she was more suited for an ordinary life.
She didn’t have Fu Bing’s strong mindset, capable of handling so much.
She was more accustomed to relying on others, moving forward with them rather than standing on her own.
It was approaching midnight. Fireworks burst one cluster after another outside the window, illuminating much of the night sky. Amidst the explosions, Fu Bing’s phone rang, but the noise was so loud that no one noticed.
All members of the Su Family had gathered at the entrance of the operating room.
Su Junling put down her overheated phone. "No one is answering."
Xi Simiao said, "It’s almost the New Year, and some places haven’t banned fireworks. The sound of the fireworks must be too loud."
Su Junxian wrapped his arms around Xi Simiao. "Dr. Li is already in there; we should have faith in Dr. Li."
Han Liying’s eyes were full of anxiety, but she suppressed it, saying, "Junling, send a message to Fu Bing explaining the situation here, and see what her attitude is."
Su Junxian stopped her. "Fu Bing spent three years in prison and can finally celebrate the New Year with friends. Do you really have to distrust the two Dr. Lis and insist on dragging Fu Bing here for treatment? Does she owe us something?"
By the end, his voice carried a note of anger.
Xi Simiao’s expression showed a trace of surprise. In all the time she had known him, it was the first time she had seen him show any sign of anger.
Su Junling looked at her older brother with confusion in her eyes but still said, "Brother, Xiaobing is my friend, and she’s also a very skilled doctor. If we don’t even tell her, what would she think afterward?"
"So, we don’t need to consider the feelings of Dr. Li and Li Rui? Or have you forgotten what Fu Bing went through after the passing of Teacher Rong Shizhi? Even if she’s not acting now, with her fame, she’d be trending wherever she appears. You want her to get slandered again? Why should she exhaust herself to help and then get criticized in the end? Is it because of the cold shoulder you gave her during her first visit to the Su Family?"
If someone else had said Su Junxian’s words, no one would have thought much of it.
Before the others could respond, Su Junhui said, "Brother has a point. Moreover, your attitude towards Fu Bing isn’t treating her as a friend but more like a pet that comes when called and goes when told. If you really wanted her to come for treatment, why didn’t you say so earlier? Why insist on frantically calling her in these last minutes before the New Year? Do you think your behavior is right?"
Su Junhui also spoke with anger, "She is a person with dignity, not the Su Family’s dog."
Fu Bing had never basked in any reflected glory from the Su Family, yet she had saved a member of their family. On the surface, the Su Family treated her with courtesy, but inwardly, they were still full of arrogance.
Su Junling was scolded in turn by her older brother and younger brother.
She couldn’t help but ponder whether she had also unintentionally displayed arrogance and disdain in her interactions with Fu Bing.
Fu Bing had treated her well when she was in Jiangnan.
But upon closer inspection, Fu Bing wasn’t bad to others either.
Fu Bing was the type to repay kindness twofold, but she wasn’t like that with her.
In Fu Bing’s mind, she believed she had repaid her for the job offer upon her release from prison.
Fu Bing wouldn’t deliberately distance herself from her, nor would she intentionally get close.
As for clinging to the Su Family, Fu Bing had no intention of doing so!
In the midst of silence, Su Jiang spoke up.
"Junling, just send Fu Bing a New Year’s greeting; there’s no need to tell her about this. Even Dr. Li, with all his magnanimity, couldn’t possibly let Fu Bing step into the operating room every time a patient’s condition became critical. If it happened too often, their professional standing would suffer, and they’d become resentful of Fu Bing.
"Others would think she lacks discretion, showing off her skills regardless of the occasion. If she succeeded, she wouldn’t earn everyone’s gratitude; if she failed, she’d bear the blame."
Su Junling then realized her own thinking had been too simplistic.
She had only wanted Fu Bing to come and save her grandmother’s life, without considering the situation Fu Bing would face.
If Fu Bing succeeded, she would receive some thanks and a few gifts from them.
These were things Fu Bing didn’t lack.
And she would have to travel all the way from Jiangnan during the New Year.
Why should Fu Bing go through all that trouble?
Su Junling lowered her head. "It was inconsiderate of me."
Su Junling stepped aside and sent a message to Fu Bing.
"Xiaobing, wishing you a Happy New Year. May you have only happiness and no worries henceforth."
The New Year’s chimes echoed from afar, a deep, resonant sound. It was the sound from the ancient bell tower in Jiangcheng, a sound that had traversed the long river of time, distant and enduring.
After the third ring of the bell, the sky was filled with bursting fireworks. The dark night sky erupted with thousands of silvery blossoms, dazzling and glorious.
The Su family watched the fireworks from across the corridor.
Su Jiang said, "We don’t need so many people here. You all go home first. I’ll notify you if there’s any news."
Without further ado, he made the arrangements.
"Junxian, you need to accompany Simiao back home tomorrow morning. Take your mom, Junzhe, and Junling with you. Junhui and I will stay here."
Su Junxian didn’t object. "Call me anytime if there’s any issue."
Han Liying looked thoughtfully at Su Jiang and Su Junhui. "Let’s go. We’ll come back tomorrow morning."
Since their parents and eldest brother had spoken, neither Su Junzhe nor Su Junling objected.
It wasn’t until only Su Junxian and Xi Simiao were left that Xi Simiao hesitantly spoke up.
"Junxian, are you troubled by something?"
His emotions had always been very stable; in all the years she had known him, she had never seen him lose his temper.
He must have been bottling up a lot for even a hint of it to slip out.
Exhausted, Su Junxian sank into the sofa and reached out to her, his tone uncharacteristically plaintive.
"Come here and let me hold you."
Xi Simiao’s heart instantly melted. She took off her chilly coat, embraced his waist, and nestled into his arms.
"We’ll shoulder it together if there’s an issue. Don’t keep it all inside."
Su Junxian lowered his head and kissed her hair softly.
